The railroad across Bozeman Pass was part of Northern Pacific’s main line between the Upper Midwest and Pacific Northwest. From Livingston, Montana, at an elevation of 4,484 feet, the line climbed westward on a 1.8 percent grade to its summit at 5,500 feet. The first Northern Pacific train crossed Bozeman Pass in January 1884, and today the line serves as a vital segment of the giant BNSF Railway.
