- Codemasters has secured the official WRC licence - 1 June 2020
Codemasters, creators of the beloved Colin McRae Rally series and the critically acclaimed Dirt Rally games, has secured the official WRC licence from 2023 (as reported by GI.biz ), with a deal that currently runs through to 2027. It does mean there'll be quite some time until we see the fruits of the deal, with a new game from the Dirt Rally team due before the deal commences, and with Dirt 5 also on the slate after its reveal earlier this year. Bigben Interactive continues to hold the licence and will carry on producing games in the meantime, with this year's WRC 9 set to continue developer Kylotonn's impressive run on the series. The last Codemasters' game to carry the official WRC licence was Colin McRae Rally 3 back in 2002, whereupon it was picked up by Evolution Studios for a run of PS2-exclusive titles before Milestone stepped in. Forget 0-60 - if you want to go from sitting idly on your sofa to a state of pure focus as fast as a turbo-charged Toyota Yaris WRC goes from a standstill to breaking the national speed limit, then there's really no better fix than your common garden rally game. Nothing else asks so much of its players, busying them with a relentless succession of turns and ever-changing terrain. It's an improbable sport - I still can't quite believe people are allowed to thread weaponised hatchbacks around narrow country roads at such speed - that makes for almost impossibly challenging games, and I love both all the more for it. With Codemasters hitting a purple patch with Dirt Rally and its sequel - for my money some of the very best takes on the sport I've had the pleasure of playing - it's a good time to pound some badly-maintained roads, and Kylotonn's joining the party with WRC 8. Now, to the casual outsider, what we’re doing might seem absolutely nuts, but we thought we’d put together an alphabetical list of all the PC games that have been confirmed to appear at this year’s E3 show. Profound excitement took over me like a dog getting a squeaky chew toy today when I learned that Grandia HD Collection was at E3. We might even get a release date!
