- Before I Forget: How two strangers made one of 2020's most moving games - 10 May 2021
They met when the story of Before I Forget begins, at a game jam in Bristol in 2016. Chella Ramanan and Claire Morwood didn't know each other but, on a wave of intuition, decided to tackle the brief of 'borders' together. And whereas other people took a more physical approach, looking at things like Trump building a wall, or the Syrian refugee crisis, Ramanan and Morwood decided to look inwards. They pulled on an idea Ramanan had scribbled down in a book at some unconnected time before the event. Simply, she wrote, 'Woman with dementia'. It was an idea born out of a fascination with memories and what they are, and what happens when someone begins to lose them. I'm a bit surprised by this. I expected the idea to originate from some kind of personal experience of dementia, in whatever form that may be. Magic. Have you ever really considered what it means? We're told what it means a lot, especially in games. We're told it means fireballs and lightning bolts and turning people into sheep. But is that really magic, or is it simply a term used to describe something we've become accustomed to? It's a thought that's been nagging at me. It occurred reading The Tombs of Atuan recently, the second Earthsea book by Ursula K. Le Guin. It's a book about a wizard but something about the magic feels different. It feels incomprehensible. It's not defined by dice rolls or numbered values or rules, but worked out somewhere outside of explanation, just past the edge of understanding. - Narrative exploration game Before I Forget launches in July - 3 July 2020
The first game from indie studio 3-Fold Games is a bittersweet one. Before I Forget is a first-person exploration game about a woman with early onset dementia uncovering her past. Despite that, 3-Fold call it “delicate and atmospheric,” as the main character remembers details about her life and partner. It will release on July 16th. (more…)
- POC in Play celebrated its first anniversary with a clutch of cool games - 12 March 2020
Founded just over a year ago, POC in Play is an independent organisation that aims to increase the visibility and representation of people of colour working in the video game industry.
