  • Wait, what? Cube World is coming out - 23 September 2019

Cube World s development has been its own epic quest. The voxel-based Minecraftbut was first written about in the vellum back pages of RPS in 2011 , by the ancient and wise Rossignol. It’s a Zelda and Minecraft inspired RPG, where explorey quests are dropped into a procedurally generated blocky landscape. Since 2013 it has gone through some stuff. It was nearly published by Mojang, independently released, unreleased, attacked, presumed dead, and recently resurrected. It will be out on Steam on September 30th, though alpha backers can get it now. Here s how it all looks nowadays. (more…)

  • Long-in-the-works voxel-based action-RPG Cube World is out at the end of September - 20 September 2019

Developer Picroma has revealed that its long-in-the-works voxel-based action-RPG will be coming to Steam, somewhat earlier than previously announced, on Monday, 30th September. Cube World first emerged back in 2013, and immediately impressed with its endearing looks and bold premise; it sought to deliver a procedurally generated sandbox-style fantasy adventure, with a focus on open-world exploration, that would completely reconfigure itself with each new play-through. Interest was strong enough that developer Wolfram von Funck agreed to release his hobby project as a paid alpha, with that initial release proving to be both an enjoyably genteel experience in its own right, and a solid foundation for future development. • After six years of waiting, Cube World alpha purchasers get to play a new build next week - 17 September 2019

Developer Picroma has announced that its very-long-in-the-works voxel-based action-RPG, Cube World, will be holding a closed beta next week, ahead of its official launch later this year. Cube World, which first surfaced all the way back in 2013, is designed to deliver an exploration-focussed take on the action-RPG genre, with its procedurally generated open-world promising a different experience on every play-through. While Cube World's $15 USD alpha version, released in 2013, was enjoyable in its own right, its successes have long been overshadowed by the fact that its developer, Wolfram von Funck, embarked on an extended period of radio silence not long after launch, with whole years passing between social media posts. von Funck attributed this to mental health issues in a recent, candid blog post. • Cube World dev opens up about lengthy development, mental health - 7 September 2019

The developer of Cube World has opened up about its lengthy development and lack of updates throughout. This week, Picroma announced the voxel-based action-RPG Cube World would hit Steam in the next couple of months - six years after its controversial alpha release (more on that in Matt's report on Cube World's launch announcement ). Following that announcement, developer Wolfram von Funck issued a message to the Cube World community , saying an early distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack "traumatised me and kind of broke something inside me". • Six years after its controversial alpha, voxel action-RPG Cube World is heading to Steam - 6 September 2019

Developer Picroma has announced that Cube World, its very-long-in-the-works voxel-based action-RPG, will be making its way to Steam in the next month or two, six years after its controversial alpha release. Cube World first surfaced all the way back in 2013, and immediately dazzled thanks to its striking, procedurally generated world. It promised to deliver a unique, exploration-focussed take on the action-RPG genre, with players able to adopt a variety of different classes and embark on an open-world adventure that would be different with every play-through. Interest was strong enough that developer Wolfram von Funck agreed to release his hobby project Cube World as a paid alpha, with players able to pick up the game for $15 USD. Following a rocky launch, in which purchases were temporarily suspended as a result of DDOS attacks on the developer's servers, only one further update was re…
