- Development Indefinitely Halted - 28 February 2026
Sorry, all.I just can't work on this project with the state of the world right now being as it is.All my creative juices for this project have evaporated because each time I touch it all I can feel is 'this is not an outlet for anxiety, it is a creator of anxiety'. I do not want to create the Torment Nexus as a cautionary tale/theme-exploration in a time where people are searching for Torment Nexuses to bring into the world.I'm putting this apocalypse on ice. Wish I could do more than that. Wish I had better news. One day I hope to revisit and complete this work with the resources and focus I feel it deserves.Thank you for all your support. This doesn't mean I'm stopping making games -- it just means that, for now, I'm stopping work on this one. Follow me as a publisher if you'd like to stay up-to-date on any new games I start work on (and I do have a few in the low fires right now that…
- Paths traveled. Paths ahead. - 5 December 2024
Hey all! So I've been busy behind the scenes working on To Ash and Ember for a while now and I wanted to poke my head up to show you how things are cooking. Generally speaking: I've got a pretty solid foundation at this point for the game's development and I'm about to start putting out private builds for those who're backing me on 'other services' (which I don't believe I'm allowed to link to on Steam?). Anywho, lots to show and see here so I'm going to keep this news post rolling. So firstly: I've refreshed the old screenshots on the Steam page. They were taken when the project was much younger and a lot more was unfinished or just-plain-half-framed. Since then I've been taking the time to visit all of the core systems and find ways and paths I felt worked well for the game. This involved a lot of R&D and throwing concepts in and then throwing them out if I felt they didn't play or 'f…
- Dungeons and Decks - 12 March 2024
Well, howdy all! Project Status The project has taken some big strides over the past month. I'm presently moving apartments, caring for my partner as they recover from surgery, and managing my workhours for a few game-dev related contracts (go check out Astral Ascension on Steam if you're a big fan of sci-fi romance and Visual Novels!). Shortly: there hasn't been as many hours a week as I'd like to have been putting in to TAE this last month. Even so: things have been quite busy over in The City! To briefly summarize the last month's work: You can explore (and configure the decks of ala Hand-of-Fate) dungeons You can now fight monsters in deck-based combat Battle cards can target multiple squares Made it so that if you hit a blank square in combat you either hit the opponent on the other side of the table or, if there isn't one, hit a random enemy on the board. No damage gets wasted! Ma…
- On Heralds and Harriers - 2 February 2024
(Content shown in screenshots are works in progress and subject to change) As you may have noticed, I've decided to 'spruce things up a little' with the game's screenshots. This is because I've finally gotten around to replacing the placeholder palettes with my own custom variants. If things go well, you should be able to make your own palettes in the game itself! Beyond this, I've been hammering away at the game's foundations to get that next big cogwheel ("Fighting a Slaughtered God") ready to spin. Fighting a slaughtered god requires at minimum a few new things added to the core game and ways to get them. Namely, you're going to need Clues and with them will (optimally) come Heralds. Clues Clues are little bits and pieces that reveal your Adversary (the God chosen at the start of your run who is slowly stirring from their slumber) or prepare you to fight them. There's a few reliable…
- Resurrection! Rebuild in new game engine! - 23 January 2024
(Disclaimer: Any screenshots shown here are from an early prototype version of the game; gameplay and UI shown are not final) Hey everyone. Firstly: sorry it's been so long since the last update. Things took a turn for the worse for a while there and, just when I was starting to get things ready for launch in 2023, Unity decided to stab its developers in the back. What happened Not wanting to deal with a partner who was happily ready and waiting to stab me in the back, I immediately discontinued all my Unity-based projects. Since then, I've been gearing up in other engines to bring my projects to life once more. To Ash and Ember is the first to get this treatment. I've switched over to Godot 4.2. In the three weeks I've spent rebuilding TAE so far after spending a few months learning the ins and outs of working with Godot, I've already made significant strides. The core gameloop is almo…
- Progress Report: Ritual Phase - 7 April 2022
Hey all! Wanted to show y'all a cool part of this game that hasn't really gotten a lot of daylight yet. The 2D/Deck style for Dungeon-type confrontations and mysteries is up and running in a primitive fashion now and can be fully completed. Since that was in an up and running state I decided I'd get the Ritual phase up and going too. Up until now the only place you could find anything about the Ritual phase of the game was in my notes. No longer! Diving into Rites and Rituals Stages of To Ash and Ember's main gameloop: World Distortion -> Home Base -> Mystery -> Investigation -> Confrontation -> Ritual -> God Confrontation / World Distortion The Ritual Phase So, you've gotten into a game of To Ash and Ember and you've solved a Mystery. Great! Though this helps save the City from the distortions of the world, it does not stop the slowly ticking clock of the God's coming resurrection. Eve…
- The Fog Returns (Not an April Fools Joke) - 1 April 2022
The Fog rolls in and The City calls once more... Welcome back, everyone! The last year did its best to keep me busy fighting for heat, a place to live, and even up to and including bankruptcy (never-mind the pandemic) -- but I'm back! I've resumed work on To Ash and Ember now that my situation has stabilized and am revving it up for an Early Access launch and a possible Kickstarter for extra content. As I pick the dark pen back up I'll be making a few changes to help speed this project along. First, I'd like to set expectations. My current goal is to get a full gameloop ready to go as soon as possible, even if not all the systems of the game are included and detailed by the time that's done. Here's what I'm expecting a full gameloop should look like: Downtime (Build your guild, do research on the coming God, try to undo what's been done to the world, gain allies or shut down foes, and f…
