• Bug fix release. - 30 September 2020

  Bug fixes, including: - Mouse input in some UI screens/elements not recognized. - Minor UI fixes for the (experimental) debug view. - Fixes for a bunch of things that led to unnecessary log files; from the user perspective this would look like a minor perf fix. If you have any issues, please report them to the forum. The game uses the Unity Bug Reporter to collect crashes automatically, but if you have any non-crashing issues I can't start to fix them unless they are reported. Especially things that I can't easily replicate, like "German text looks strange on my Turkish system." :) Thank you for all of your support!

• Native Languages Now Default, Bug Fixes - 28 September 2020

  tl;dr; All of the native translations are now included in the main build - yay! I also fixed a nasty text-related bug. The rest of this post is the tale of how that bug got fixed. If you are interested in the craziness that is solo indie game development, you might find this interesting, if not, well, that's cool. ;) The first thing I noticed was the text would occasionally disappear - as in, just simply not appear. Hard to replicate, did show up in the logs occasionally. Eventually, I was able to isolate it down to a stack trace inside of TextMeshPro, a nice text package that's part of Unity for rendering text in the game. BlazeSky supports nine different languages, which means that when a character is drawn on screen I use a series of fallback fonts. The default English font is Futura, but for non-English languages I fall back on Google's Noto font family. So, if the letter A is drawn…

• Native Language Translations - 1 September 2020

  This is a quick one - the Steam beta channel for BlazeSky now has native translations of the game available in eight additional languages (plus English). These languages include Spanish, Italian, German, French, Japanese, Simplified Chinese, Russian, and Korean. If you have never launched the game and you are running on a system that is set to one of these languages, the game will default to that language. Alternatively, you can also change your language on the home screen. You can save and quit and switch languages as you wish - save files are language independent. After a bit more testing, these translations will be released to the default release channel. Thank you for your support!

• Mouse Support! - 13 August 2020

  tl;dr - if you prefer to play with keyboard and mouse, this release is for you! BlazeSky is, in many ways, a dual-stick shooter. I expected most people to play with a game controller, not a keyboard and mouse. Watching streamers play the game, it became painfully obvious that a lot of people prefer keyboard and mouse. This release adds proper mouse support, making keyboard and mouse a first-class option. Notable Features & Enhancements: The mouse can now be used to fire the turrets, activate items, and zoom in and out with the scroll wheel. Many bug fixes related to the control mapper/customizer. Added the photo mode button to the game controller by default. Save files are now written to a folder on disk, instead of the player preferences. • Voice Actors, Preview for Eight Languages - 26 July 2020

  Several characters now have preliminary voice actors added (not all, yet). The audio is currently being reworked and remixed. For example, music will eventually fade out when dialog is spoken, that's not quite in yet. All of the game text with the exception of the main story missions is now "translated" via Google Translate. This is a first step toward full localization - once the voice actors are done, the final script is locked. Then there will be a Google Translate pass, and finally a native speaker pass. • Content Update - 24 June 2020

  Lots of fixes and improvements. Notable improvements include dynamic UI support for keyboard, XBox One, and PS4 controllers - play with just a keyboard on your laptop, plug in a controller and the UI will automatically switch to the controller. Other updates: - There are now three save slots. Great for testing, or if you have more than one player on your account. - Fixes for the opening scene. Still not final, but should work with any aspect ratio. - Multiple aspect ratio support - 4:3, 16:9, 16:10, 2:1 or some other kind of monitor? All UI elements should work fine now. - In-game cursor. • Updated Dialog System - 9 June 2020

  All of the dialog with NPCs now features player response icons. These icons help clarify the differences between the response for the player. Eventually, these icons will also be linked to (some level) of game system logic. This is part of the overall process of finalizing the NPC dialog in the game. The path is a) finalize the script, then b) record the voice actors and then c) localize the script into one or more additional languages. It would be *really* helpful if you would report any issues with the script or dialog. Anything from a typo to something confusing would be great. There are also lots of minor updates and tweaks - too many to list, but here's a few: - Lots and lots of audio fixes, including a lot of missing loop regions (that's why the music just... disappeared a lot). • New Audio Options + Other Updates - 27 May 2020

  You may now notice that the NPCs in the game are chatty - there is temporary developer audio now for most NPC barks and a bit of Barnes's dialog. Much of that audio is literally just temp files in place to verify that the events are wired up. The plan is to replace all of that dialog with "real" audio. In the meantime, if it gets old you can turn the bark and dialog volume down in settings. You'll also notice a bunch of ambient audio in certain areas - the crack of asteroids and crystals, the crackling of energy, the radio chatter of different bases. That's also all a work-in-progress, but it's an important step to wiring everything up.
