My hopes are high for GTA 6. We're going back to Vice City (albeit a reimagined, modernized version) and, based on Red Dead Redemption 2, Rockstar's ability to spin a convincing, epic crime drama has only gotten better in the past ten years. But the shadow of the GTA Trilogy Definitive Edition still looms large over my memory. The 'improved' visuals effectively robbed GTA 3, Vice City, and San Andreas of all their identity and atmosphere. - GTA: Vice City almost got turned into a Scottish zombie survival game - 21 November 2023
GTA developer Rockstar once had a go at making a zombie survival game set in Scotland using Vice City ’s code, but quickly gave up because people found it too depressing a concept to keep working on. No, this isn’t satire. This project was apparently something Rockstar North’s developers worked on as a bit of a change of pace in between putting out the equally beloved Vice City and GTA San Andreas in the early 2000s. This is according to Dutch developer Obbe Vermeij , who served as the studio’s Technical Director between 1995 and 2009 and has recently decided to start a blog discussing what he worked on during his time in the role. In one of the entries he’s posted so far, Vermeij delves into some games that never ended up actually making it onto shelves, with one of these being that zombie game, which was given the working title “Z”. Between GTA 3, Vice City, and Grand Theft Auto San Andreas , it felt like the Rockstar sandbox game never could and never would put a free-roaming foot wrong. But then came GTA Definitive Edition. Over a year since Grand Theft Auto DE launched, we're still waiting on bug fixes from Rockstar (and maybe a Red Dead Redemption 2 update, while they're at it). Nevertheless, GTA Definitive Edition is now on the Epic Games Store, after its recent arrival on Steam. Rockstar launching GTA Definitive Edition on Steam felt like a chance to give the sandbox game collection a new lease of life, a second wind. Despite a 50% discount however, the remasters of GTA 3, Vice City, and San Andreas are struggling to find a substantive player base on Valve's platform, as many of the bugs and visual issues that hampered the original launch of Definitive Edition remain in the re-release. Rockstar have brought Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy - Definitive Edition to Steam more than a year after its disastrous launch. GTA Trilogy was originally released as a Rockstar Store exclusive, and packages together GTA III (the first 3D one), GTA: Vice City (the best one), and GTA: San Andreas (the one with CJ in it). The collection’s arrival on Steam replaces the original versions of each game on the storefront, and coincides with a publisher sale that ends February 2nd. Read more

Sony has announced October’s PlayStation Plus Game Catalog lineup, and it's a bumper crop. Rockstar have apologised for "the unexpected technical issues" in Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy - Definitive Edition , saying the remastered versions of GTA 3, Vice City, and San Andreas did not launch in a state with meets their standards of quality. Probably shouldn't have released them in that state, then. They say they plan to improve them, and did release a bug-fixing patch over the weekend. They will also put the original versions back on sale, and will give them to people who buy the remastered trilogy. Read more

GTA: The Trilogy - Definitive Edition is out today, and just before we all step back into Liberty City, Vice City or San Andreas, Rockstar has furnished us with a complete list of all the songs that will be in the compilation of the classic sandbox games. From the off, it's worth noting that there will be some notable omissions. Some artists – likely those who's licenses are tied up in rights issues – won't be returning to the games. Despite the soundtrack boasting over 200 songs across 29 radio stations, singers like Ozzy Osbourne, Kate Bush and Michael Jackson have all seen their songs removed from the games. As Rockstar remains odddly tight-lipped on anything to do with the upcoming Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition , dataminers are starting to piece together a few more details about what the collection of games might actually look (and play) like. As well as new achievements and artwork , uncovered ahead of the actual reveal of the Remastered Trilogy, the folks over at GTA Forums have dug up more information about the incoming compilation of games.
