- Movie World Developer Blog 9 - 30 April 2021
Hi! As promised, today's blog will be a quick game progress update. In the past weeks, I have completed map transformation. There is now a complete final map in the game that changes through time. I wanted to create a unique atmosphere where you can see a time change. I think that similar games have a time system in place, but you don't really »see« or »feel« the time change. I have created eight unique hand-drawn images that represent the map and change through time. You can see some of the changes down below. This is a completely new map design and also a final one! So no more changes! 😉 Part of the map in 1920 You can also see in the second picture how the map will look through world war II, where theaters will be forced to close down, and you will have to be a little more resourceful with your money. Part of the map during the war And in this last picture, you can see a rebuilt cit…
- Movie World Update - 24 March 2021
Hi! First I want to say that the game is still in development! 😊 But since December many things have changed in my personal life. A big part of my time is dedicated to college and this semester due to the pandemic things have changed a lot… I have to take daily tests that I need to complete to go on final exams. I have personally misled you too many times with different release dates that didn't come to fruition. Therefore I have decided that I will completely stop giving release dates on the game until it is ready. I want the game to be complete and not a rushed mess with cut corners. I also understand that this can be frustrating for you, and after a long thought, I have decided to be completely transparent and post progress updates at least once per month. Here is the rough list of features that still need to be completed. Once all of them are finished, the game will be near complet…
- Movie World Developer Blog 8 - Progress - 22 December 2020
Hello everyone! This is an eight blog post on the game called Movie World. Today's blog will be a little different from the rest, as you will see. I wanted to include You more in the whole development process, so I decided to create a blog where I will talk purely about my work on the game. I have a huge problem with moving on in this game. I realized that I always come back and upgrade old mechanics, add small new features, etc. This stops me from completing the game. The game was, in my eyes, already complete last year in December. There was a simple but effective loan system, simple financial system, message bar, technology system, and a movie production loop. But, because I learned so much in those 6 months on game development and got so many new ideas, I decided to continue my work on the game. After all, this game is first and foremost my own passion project. I continued my work o…
- Movie World Developer Blog 7 - News - 8 December 2020
Hello everyone! Today, I want to introduce you to the in-game news system. I created a newspaper, publication containing information about future technologies, facts, hints, and current events that are happening inside the game. I decided that this is a much better way to display information about different topics while at the same time, creating a more immersive experience. A new newspaper is typically published every few months and contains four different random articles. Reading a newspaper is not mandatory, but can be helpful. After all, the newspaper is your biggest tool in Movie World. Apart from the help menu, of course. 😉 Newspaper articles can be in divided into five sections: Education: Short, interesting facts about the real world movie industry. Technology: Future technologies that will be available for research in-game. Events: Summarizes different events that are currentl…
- Movie World Developer Blog 6 - Awards - 24 November 2020
Hello everyone! First of all, I would like to thank you all for taking the time to read my blogs 😊. Secondly, I realized that I made a mistake with my blog schedule statement. I have around 10 blogs left, where I still feel like I didn't reveal ¼ of the game. If I put out blogs every week, I will 100% run out of them before the final release. This, however, does not mean that the game is more than 5 months away. I simply want to exponentially release more and more content, including blogs, before the final release. So I decided that from now on, blogs will be released every two weeks on Tuesdays. I apologize, and I hope you understand. Now I would like to introduce you the Awards in Movie World. There are three types of awards. Studio Awards, Movie Awards, and Series Awards. Each award type has its own ceremony you can attend and watch. I tried to create each award ceremony unique by a…
- Movie World Developer Blog 5 - Studio pt.2 - 17 November 2020
Hello everyone! Today I want to go back and talk more about features regarding the main game building called "Studio." The last section of the studio is called a »Loan.« In Movie World you can borrow a sum of money that is expected to be paid back with interest. Loan interest rates are always changing with time from 5-30%. There is also a dynamic sum limit, which depends on your own studio money. The second to last section is »Finances,« where you get a small financial overview. You see a more in-depth look at profit, income, and expenses regarding the last year. There is also a small section where you can keep track of the income-profit differences for each year. Now let's move on to some fun stuff 😊. In the section called »Market,« you can see your market share, which in Movie World shows you the size of your studio in an industry, populated by other rival studios comparing each stud…
- Movie World Developer Blog 4 - Franchises - 27 October 2020
Hello everyone! This is a fourth blog post on the game called Movie World. A franchise is a collection of related films in succession that share the same fictional universe. In Movie World you can create, grow, and manage franchises. You can add any movie/series to the franchise in the pre-production movie/series phase. Franchises can be sold or used in the mid-game for distribution purposes. Popular franchises can boost your distribution and help you unlock new renown stars. I didn't want to restrict a franchise to only one genre, so I created three types. This way, you will still be able to put different genre movies into one franchise if they have similar qualities. Types: -Alacrity: Good for high action movies -Converse: Good for heavy dialog movies -Intricacy: Good for complex movies Don't worry. You don't have to learn weird franchise-type "names." They are only variable names :).…
- Movie World Developer Blog 3 - Electricity - 20 October 2020
Hello everyone! This is a third blog post on the game called Movie World. Today I will slightly touch on electricity. Building and scenery objects in Movie World need electricity to run. Buildings that are out of power cannot be used. To get electricity, you will need to build a Power Plant. There are 6 levels to the building, and each level outputs more electricity. The power plant can also be upgraded with perks. The latter can be researched through Research building and can be installed in buildings to get certain benefits. The main purpose of electricity in Movie World is to help create a more balanced progression throughout the game and is helping me as a developer to better control the progress in a more »open« way rather than doing it behind the scenes. Lastly, I want to give more information on the game itself. The main playthrough of the game is planned to be around 8 hours lon…
- Movie World Developer Blog 2 - Studio pt.1 - 13 October 2020
Hello everyone! This is a second blog post on the game called Movie World. Today I want to go more in-depth on a few of the features regarding the main game building called "Studio." You start the game by building a »Studio« where you can monitor most of your movie studio information. The whole building is divided into five sections. The first section is called an »Overview« and contains basic information such as your studio name, logo, studio renown, reputation, and environment. The studio name and logo are in the game purely for cosmetic purposes and do not have an impact on the game. Studio Renown is used for the main game progression. It is represented as six stars. Each gained star upgrades your buildings, attracts better actors, directors, unlocks new buildable objects, and building upgrades. Each star has its own set of goals that need to be achieved in order to unlock it. Studio…
- Movie World Developer Blog 1 - Introduction - 6 October 2020
Hello everyone! This is a first blog post on the game called Movie World. Firstly, I want to share with you my backstory on how the game came to be. I started this project one year ago because I really wanted to play a hybrid between a game The Movies and more, casual games like Mad Games Tycoon and Game Dev Tycoon. I remember that there was another game listed on steam from another studio that was exactly what I wanted, but since the development of that game stopped, I decided to make my own game. I'm sure you've all seen a game description, so I will not bother you with that, instead, I will give you small snippets of information that you might find useful and later on expand and go more in-depth on all of the features in the upcoming blogs. At the moment game is playable. However, I still need to add two big features and update a few of the older ones. I initially planned the game to…
