  • Unreal mastermind Cliff Bleszinski really likes this fan-made Redux remaster: 'Time for a new generation to learn that Unreal isn't just an engine' - 6 October 2025

Unreal Redux, an in-development remake of the classic FPS Unreal, is not an official Epic Games project, but it does have the official thumbs-up from one very important person: Original Unreal designer Cliff Bleszinski, who said on X that it "looks SO COOL.".. Read more.

  • Unreal Gold and Unreal Tournament are now free on the Internet Archive, and Epic says that's A-okay - 14 November 2024

Have you ever thought to yourself, "Gosh, I've heard such good things about the classic 1998 shooter Unreal and sure would like to try it, but I just don't know where to get it these days?" If so, I have good news: The Internet Archive has made it free, along with the multiplayer follow-up Unreal Tournament, and it has Epic's blessing to do so... Read more.

  • Fresh off a fantastic Quake 2 remaster, Nightdive would once again like Tim Sweeney to know it's ready and eager to do the same to Unreal - 21 August 2023

Friends, I have a confession to make. You might have seen one or two stories on our website about Baldur's Gate 3 , an overall pretty solid RPG that practically everyone on staff here has been pouring hours and days of their lives into. But not me. I've been distracted by another venerable series, a contemporary of the original Baldur's Gate games and the first game I ever remember laying my hands on. I've been playing Quake 2... • The creators of the System Shock remake want to do Unreal next - 17 August 2023

Stephen Kick, CEO of Nightdive Studios, has said he'd love to remaster Epic's 90s FPS Unreal. Not familiar with Nightdive? They're the team behind this May's triumphant System Shock remake, which Jeremy Peel described in his review as "a breathtakingly beautiful and astonishingly faithful remake that proves the enduring power of Looking Glass design". They're also the studio behind last week's surprise-released Quake 2 remaster , and a bunch of other classic 90s remasters including the PC version of DOOM 64 and Rise of the Triad: Ludicrous Edition . It's safe to say they know how to pull off a retro ( sorry, Kamiya-san ) comeback. Read more

  • Nightdive wants to remaster the original Unreal next - 5 June 2022

Last year Nightdive Studios released a Quake remaster giving the classic FPS 4K and widescreen resolution support, enhanced models, dynamic and colored lighting, anti-aliasing, depth of field, and some new levels by MachineGames. It also restored the original Trent Reznor score, previously absent from the digital version due to an expired copyright, and added a new theme song by Reznor. All that, and it was free for owners of the original Quake... Read more.

  • Quake remastered devs want an Unreal game remake - 4 June 2022

An Unreal game remake could be on the cards from the team behind last year's Quake remastered . Apparently, Nightdive Studios has "reached out" to Epic Games about a possible Unreal 1 remastered release - which would finally mark the return of one of the best FPS games on PC . Despite the popularity of Epic's Unreal Engine - which these days powers everything from The Witcher 4 to the next game from the Alien Isolation team, as well as the studio's own Fortnite - the engine hasn't been used to create a new Unreal game since the free Unreal Tournament game, which is pretty dead now . While it's not a new Unreal single-player game, Nightdive Studios - the team behind the Quake remaster, bringing Doom 64 to PC , and the upcoming System Shock remake - wants to remaster the original, best Unreal game . According to Nightdive CEO Stephen Kick, Unreal and Gears of War co-creator Cliff Bleszins…

  • Building a Retro Linux Gaming Computer - Part 14: Return to Na Pali - 28 February 2022

One of the selling points of Unreal Tournament pitched to the modding scene by Epic Games was its ability to load assets from the original Unreal into the new engine. After a few years this snowballed into a concerted community effort to make the entire Unreal single player mode playable from within its own sequel. I had some grief installing Red Hat Linux 7.3 but with persistence I was able to get it installed. In terms of compatibility though Valhalla proved to be far superior, so I decided to stick with it and focus on improving other parts of the system instead. • Unreal (1998) is the FPS you have been missing - 23 March 2020

Past Perfect is a retrospective column in which we look back into gaming history to see whether old favourites are still worth playing today. I wanted a comfort game. A big, safe, entertaining game to sink into, to distract me from cold-o-geddon. And what better than Unreal? An enormous, superbly built FPS, that’s fast, entertaining, and full of… coughing, coughing aliens. Oh no. (more…)

  • Great moments in PC gaming: Escaping the prison ship in Unreal - 29 June 2019

Great moments in PC gaming are bite-sized celebrations of some of our favorite gaming memories.   You only need to shoot once in the entire opening level of Unreal, and that's to break the glass on the emergency exit control. Which is not to say it's peaceful. Unreal's first map is its most intense, in spite of the lack of pew-pew action. It begins with a crash. You come to in a prison cell on a wrecked spaceship, the door open and the other prisoners dead. There's a roar and scream in the distance, and as you step out a robotic voice declares that "Prisoner 849 is escaping."  You make your way through the rupturing, exploding guts of this prison ship, crawling through vents and hunting for med packs (you start at one-third health thanks to the crash). During all this you hear more screaming in the distance, Unreal's excellent 3D sound doing as much wo…

  • A retrospective of Unreal, from the people who made it - 5 June 2018

Unreal turned 20 years old this month. The extraterrestrial first-person shooter spawned (and showcased) a game engine whose descendants still motor on today . To commemorate all those screaming prisoners and innocent alien creatures killed at the hands of jumpy players, I got in touch with a handful of the original team and asked them to share their memories of making the first Skaarj conflict. This is how Unreal was made, from the perspective of the programmers, designers, artists and musicians who were there. (more…)

Wait, didn t we already answer this question? Never mind, the RPS podcast, the Electronic Wireless Show , is not content with our list of the top 50 first-person shooters . Well, they’re mostly fine with it (lists are stupid) but they still want to hash out this ageless question the old-fashioned way. By interrogating each other over the internet. (more…)

  • Unreal Gold is free on Steam and GOG - 22 May 2018

Epic's famed FPS Unreal was released 20 years ago today, and to celebrate the big birthday Steam and GOG are giving it away for the next 48 hours.    The freebie is Unreal Gold, to be specific, which bundles the original game with the Return to Na Pali mission pack. That's 47 "eye-popping" missions in all, plus 20 multiplayer levels, 13 "guaranteed giblet" weapons, and all the graphical enhancement for the latest 3D technology, including Direct3D and Glide.    I kid, but Unreal was seriously cutting-edge stuff in 1998. The actual gameplay was perhaps a little less-than-inspired, but it looked so damn good that nobody cared. More significantly it launched an engine that remains relevant to this day, and some tournaments that are still around too.    The Unreal Gold freebie will be up until 10 am PT/1 pm ET on May 24. The rest of the Unreal games on…

  • Unreal is free to celebrate its 20th birthday - 22 May 2018

“Dearest Alice, I do not play video games but fear I am insufficiently aware of my own mortality and am exploring every avenue to remedy that,” begins one of the many letters I received in the post this morning seeking my advice as a reputed expert in the field. “Which gaming platform would most frequently remind me that my youth is so very far behind me and all flesh is grass?” Well, Margo From Bishop’s Stortford, PC gaming can definitely help you. Observe how the assembled commenters wail, weep, and tug at their scant remaining hairs as I say this simple sentence: Unreal came out twenty years ago today. “What is Unreal?” Well Margo, right now you can download it for free to see for yourself. Price History Overview

USD uses SteamPulse's own locally recorded daily store snapshots, so this overview reflects the exact regional price history that SteamPulse has captured for this currency.

Coverage And Tracking Window

  • Snapshots: 1
  • Coverage: Oct 8, 2026 to Oct 8, 2026
  • Lowest observed: Free
  • Highest observed: Free

Unreal Gold's USD price history spans from Oct 8, 2026 to Oct 8, 2026, with 1 recorded snapshot across 1 calendar day. Each row records the available final price, listed base price, and discount metadata for that observation. Within this coverage the lowest recorded price is Free, the highest is Free, and the first visible tracked price is Free. These comparisons apply only to the snapshots SteamPulse holds; missing observations can contain changes that are not represented here.

For USD, SteamPulse uses locally captured regional storefront snapshots and does not reconstruct older prices with exchange-rate conversion. The chart and table show the values recorded for this exact currency from the stated coverage start. Additional snapshots extend that record, but they do not fill unobserved days or prove what the storefront displayed between observations.

Discount Windows And Sale Timing

  • Discount windows: 0
  • Discounted days: 0 days
  • Deepest markdown: No discount tracked
  • Latest sale window: No sale window tracked

Unreal Gold's tracked USD rows do not contain a discount window. This means no available snapshot in the stated coverage has usable discount metadata; it does not prove that the game was never discounted. Missing snapshots or archived rows without complete metadata can hide a sale, so SteamPulse does not infer pricing strategy from this absence.

If a later snapshot includes discount metadata, it will appear here with its recorded depth, price, date, and sale name when available. Until then, this section should be read only as a description of the available rows, not as evidence about the publisher's promotion policy.

Observed Price Changes And Stable Runs

  • Observed price drops: 0
  • Observed price rises: 0
  • Longest stable run: 1 day of uninterrupted daily tracking
  • Current run: 1 day of uninterrupted daily tracking

Outside rows carrying discount metadata, the tracked price has not recorded a separate price rise or drop yet. That means the observed undiscounted level has stayed stable across the snapshots SteamPulse currently holds. This is a statement about the recorded coverage only; it does not prove that an older or missing price change never happened.

The longest unchanged price stretch in the current record lasts 1 day of uninterrupted daily tracking at Free, from Oct 8, 2026 through Oct 8, 2026. Among rows without discount metadata, the longest unchanged run lasts 1 day of uninterrupted daily tracking at Free. The latest run records Free for 1 day of uninterrupted daily tracking as the same recorded undiscounted price. Run lengths describe consecutive stored observations only and do not establish that a price is permanent.

Latest Snapshot And Sales Context

  • Current price: Free
  • Current list price: Free
  • Distinct observed prices: 1
  • Source mode: SteamPulse local tracking

The latest tracked snapshot records Unreal Gold at Free in USD, with no active discount metadata. Across the available history SteamPulse has recorded 1 distinct final price in this currency. This supports comparisons with the lowest, highest, and most common values present in the retained record, subject to the stated coverage limits.

The live sales view and Steam sales record provide calendar context for these dates. A date overlap can be compared with a named Steam event, but it does not prove why a publisher changed a price. As new daily rows arrive, this overview recalculates its observed prices, discount windows, and run lengths automatically.
