- Story writing in Stouthollow - 20 September 2020
The importance of story writing In the early stages of development we made a decision that the core mechanic of running the shop was the most important thing about the game. The second most important thing was the story. We have a story to tell and Stouthollow Tales is the medium through which we're telling it. The process The first stage of the story writing process is to open our big ol' google doc and write every single plot point out as a list or small description. This is super high level and just serves as a guide point. Items that appear in this doc are things like "Player inherits the shop." "Player repairs the mine." This method is a more recent addition but has been vital to the story writing process. We have a big flow chart with every quest in the game. Quests typically drive all content in the game, including the story. We're able to look at this flow chart and figure where…
- Devlog Crafting Refinement - 12 August 2020
Crafting in Stouthollow Tales was also meant to be one part of a cycle that fed into your shop. You’d have the option to harvest materials, refine those materials and sell them in your shop. One of the problems we discovered came when we started plotting edge-cases for main quests. The third quest a player gets requires them to harvest 5 logs. 5 pine logs, pretty easy, there’s tons of wood to collect in the forest. While writing this devlog I reproduced the issue perfectly. I got to the wood and I got my 5 pine logs. The problem was that I got 4 regular pine logs and 1 uncommon pine log. The next leg of the quest would have me go to the carpenter and craft 1 pine counter, which is impossible. Even though I have the requirements, the old crafting system does not recognize it. One you had at least the minimum number per requirement in a rarity you’d be able to select the rare ingredient.…
- What is Stouthollow Tales? - 29 July 2020
Who We Are We are a 2 person development team, Whistling Alpaca Studio, working on Stouthollow Tales. We kicked around several ideas for a game we would love to make before we settled on creating an item shop game that we would want to play. What is Stouthollow Tales? Stouthollow Tales is a JRPG style Item shop management game, driven by exploration, narrative, customization and collection. Narrative Narrative plays a big part in Stouthollow Tales. The citizens of Stouthollow help drive the plot as you uncover the mysteries of the world around you. Collection Stouthollow Tales has 9 (at time of writing) guilds who each have their own unique set of items and crafting recipes which influence other sections of the game in unique ways. For example, in order to upgrade your shop and craft new furniture you'll need to work with the Carpenter's Guild. Explore The world in Stouthollow Tales is…
