- Exploring The Core Concepts 4/7 - All the Gadgets - 12 November 2025
Welcome back! This is the fourth post in a series where we explore the core concepts presented on the Traction Point store page. Check out the previous part here in case you missed it. Today we are looking at "All the Gadgets".Traction Point is a puzzle/exploration game. In many ways, it is similar to the point-and-click adventure games of the 90s. The main difference being, of course, that you move around the game world by driving a vehicle rather than clicking on the screen and seeing your character walk over. And just like in those old adventure games, you solve puzzles by pickup up objects and using them to manipulate the environment. You might need to find a power cell and plug it into a receptacle to power up a device, or perhaps you need to pick up another one of your vehicles, lift it up onto a ledge it cannot reach by itself, and then switch to that vehicle and drive off. But ho…
- Exploring The Core Concepts 3/7 - Switching Vehicles Freely - 24 October 2025
Welcome back! This is the third post in a series where we explore the core concepts presented on the Traction Point store page. Check out the previous part here in case you missed it. Today we are looking at "Switching Vehicles Freely".Last time, we talked about the importance of letting players drive both small and large vehicles in the game, to emphasize their size differences. When switching from a small vehicle to a large one, the player thinks "Look at me, I am so huge!", and when switching back they go "Wow, I can go so fast!". This is an important part of the Traction Point experience. In Traction Point, you can switch between the vehicles you have, by simply driving up to them and pressing a button. You'll see the switch indicator on the target vehicle, which is handy when you are close to several vehicles, and you want to know which one you are about to switch to.I've gone back…
- Exploring The Core Concepts 2/7 - Vehicles of All Sizes - 13 October 2025
Welcome to the second post in this series where we explore the core concepts presented on the Traction Point store page. Check out the previous part here in case you missed it. Today we are looking at "Vehicles of All Sizes".If there is one "main character" in Traction Point, it has to be the Mother vehicle. Mother is the big yellow cargo transporter featured in the key art, and you can see her above proudly lifting up her baby Scout. Mother is both a vehicle which you as the player can drive, as well as an AI construct overseeing the vehicle and its functions, in the story of the game. She looks after her trusty crew, providing them with a home away from home, and they look after her in turn. From the very beginning of the project, the game has revolved around a large vehicle that can be used as a "base" of sorts, with smaller vehicles providing support. Below is the first doodling of a…
- Exploring The Core Concepts 1/7 - The Joy Of Driving - 7 October 2025
I've tried to make the game description on Traction Point's store page as informative as possible, with lots of videos showing off different parts of the game, but there's only so much you can fit on the store page itself without making it overly long. So let's explore the core concepts presented on the store page in more detail, in a set of updates. I hope this will give you a better understanding of where I am coming from and what I am trying to accomplish with Traction Point.I aim to publish one of these posts every week, roughly, until we've looked at all core concepts, starting with "The Joy of Driving".Traction Point is a very personal project. I've been playing driving and racing games since the days of the original Test Drive and Need For Speed series. I've always loved the feeling of driving in games, even though I wasn't always very good at it. I'm not what you would call a "g…
