- 20 years later, Ubisoft's smallest world is still its best - 7 July 2024
In the years after Beyond Good and Evil 's launch and subsequent flop, it's taken on a legendary status as a shining example of originality in the action-adventure space. In 2003, following the success of the Rayman games, Michel Ancel turned his hand to a new IP, moving to a darker, more young-adult-oriented universe inspired by the philosophy of Friedrich Nietzsche and late '80s to early '90s animation. Now, Ubisoft's newly remastered 20th-anniversary edition offers some quality-of-life improvements, bumps up the visual fidelity, and presents an easy entry point to one of the most charming videogame worlds yet created. - Relaunched Ubisoft classic Beyond Good and Evil is suffering on Steam - 27 June 2024
I sometimes wonder, with so much time passed since Episode Two, whether people would actually care any more about Half-Life 3. It's a faintly ridiculous notion - of course they would, it's Half-Life - but people move on, more games arrive, and old favorites, no matter how wonderful, drift into history. Beyond Good and Evil is the epitome of a classic. A mainstay of 'best games ever' lists, it marks a different era for Ubisoft, before Far Cry, Assassin's Creed, and Rainbow Six Siege. The game itself still holds up, but the new Beyond Good and Evil 20th Anniversary Edition is struggling on Steam to draw the expected fervor. Read the rest of the story... - Beyond Good and Evil 20th Anniversary Edition is finally coming out - 20 June 2024
Announcing something new is rarely easy, there's a lot of spinning plates and moving parts that have to come together just right in order for things to go smoothly. In the case of the Beyond Good and Evil 20th Anniversary Edition some of those plates have come falling down recently, with a few missteps along the way that have meant we've known it's coming. Well, it's nearly here, and we'll be able to get our hands on it very soon. Read the rest of the story... - Beyond Good and Evil 2 a no-show at Ubisoft Forward, again - 10 June 2024
Sorry, folks. Tonight's Ubisoft Forward showcase has now passed by, and Beyond Good and Evil 2 was nowhere to be seen, leaving everyone still wondering whether it'll ever actually arrive at all. Yeah. We've got virtual tissues handy if you need em', Beyond Good and Evilers. Maybe it was wishful thinking for any of us to have expected the sequel to 2003's Beyond Good And Evil to actually show up at this event, especially after it officially celebrated becoming the most delayed AAA game, er, ever back in October 2022 . But, that said, what are people if they don't have hope? Beyond Good and Evil fans at this iteration of Ubisoft Forward, as it turns out. Since we got nothing, nada, zero, zilch, goose egg, of Beyond Good and Evil 2, as has pretty much become the norm at this point. Read more

- Beyond Good and Evil is finally returning, but not how we expected - 31 August 2023
Beyond Good and Evil , oh, how we miss you. Originally released back in 2003, the platform game from Ubisoft has long earned its reputation as a cult classic. We miss Jade. We miss Pey'j. Although Beyond Good and Evil 2 is still in development, it feels, somehow, further and further away - as Ubisoft prepares a slew of new Assassin's Creed games, and Rainbow Six Siege and The Crew roll on, the return of Beyond Good and Evil becomes an increasingly distant dream. Or so we thought. It might not be the full sequel, but it seems the iconic adventure game is perhaps coming back to us sooner than we expected. Read the rest of the story... - Beyond Good and Evil 2, despite all odds, is still kicking as it takes on new lead writer - 7 August 2022
Somehow, despite everything suggesting it should be dead in the water, Beyond Good and Evil 2 is still in development, as it just got a new lead writer. Beyond Good and Evil 2, the supposedly upcoming sequel to the cult classic original, hasn't exactly had a smooth development. Some version of it has been in development since at least 2008, though its first teaser trailer was the only evidence of its existence until the re-reveal in 2017. In 2020 the game's director Michel Ancel left the games industry entirely , though in 2021 Ubisoft did say it's still in development . And that somehow does still seem to be the case, as the game recently took on a new lead writer, as reported by PC Gamer . Sarah Arellano, who has done work for Blizzard and Volition , announced the news via her personal Twitter account, which is the most we've heard about the game in the last year. Read more

- The best thing a game can give you is a camera - 1 May 2021
Holding a camera in your hands has a subtle effect on the nature of reality around you, I reckon. And that's true even when the reality around you isn't that real. In the Earth Temple, somewhere across the Great Sea, I once asked Medli to move to the left a little, just so I could get a picture of her in front of a huge golden sun of some kind. I could not ask Medli, of course. I had to nudge her, and to move around in a way that meant she might follow and stop where I wanted her to stop. Then I raised the camera - wood and brass, I can almost remember the weight of it, the warmth of varnish and the chill of metal - and I took the picture. Medli's name has been long forgotten. I had to look it up just now, ditto the Earth Temple. But twenty years after the fact I can remember the moment. I remember, really, two things about The Wind Waker, the glorious Zelda game in which Medli lives. T…

- 5 games that prove friendship is better and more interesting than romance - 14 February 2020
“Is it friendship? Or is it something more?” goes a common sentiment, particularly on days like today, when we celebrate the anniversary of Captain Cook getting stabbed to death. Well, that’s a stupid question, because there is nothing more than friendship. Games are, for once, not much worse than other media at depicting and exploring themes of friendship. In fact, some of the best stories about it are in games. But since society is still too backwards to give those relationships their own day, I’m hijacking this tiresome profit-motivated holiday in their name. What are my favourite games about friendship then? Well, they’re below, obviously. (more…)
- Five of the Best: Health pick-ups - 6 September 2019
Welcome to another week of Five of the Best, a series where we celebrate the overlooked parts of video games, like hands ! And potions ! And dinosaurs ! And shops ! They're the kinds of things etched unwittingly into memory, like an essential ingredient of a favourite dish you could never put a finger on. And I want to spark discussion, so please share memories as they flash into your mind. Today, another five. The topic... Health pick-ups! Oh how very specific - but I need to be. I'm not talking about health systems but the things you pick up to heal yourself. Used to be all games did it this way, but then Halo came along with its recharging health and all of a sudden everyone wanted the same. Now that feels like the norm. But there are old-fashioned health systems out there (and they'll probably take offence at being called old-fashioned, so I'm sorry, I don't mean it in a bad way!).…
- Beyond Good & Evil 2 won't be at this year's E3 - 30 May 2019
Ubisoft has confirmed that Michel Ancel's very-long-awaited Beyond Good & Evil 2 won't be putting in an appearance at this year's E3 - but will instead be getting another showing during a livestream scheduled for next week. Livestreams have been Ubisoft's preferred means of drip-feeding Beyond Good & Evil 2 information in recent times, with the publisher even using the opportunity last year to offer up the very first footage of the game in action. Subsequent livestreams haven't been quite as exciting, admittedly, and those looking forward to seeing more in-game footage probably shouldn't get their hopes up for next week's offering. Ubisoft's livestream announcement specifically notes that the team "look forward to sharing more with you, including new gameplay footage, when the time is right". Read more
- The good, the unknown and the ugly of Beyond Good & Evil 2 - 28 June 2018
Last week, Beyond Good & Evil 2 creator Michel Ancel told fans to expect a playable beta of the game towards the end of 2019 . It was disappointing news, perhaps, for those eager to explore the kind of worlds glimpsed in last year's flashy E3 debut trailer. But it was also news which should come as absolutely no surprise to anyone following the game's still-early progress. What sort of game will Beyond Good & Evil 2 be? It's still hard to say - a year on from the tech demo shown behind closed doors at E3 2017. Over the 12 months, Ubisoft Montpellier has periodically streamed updates to its loyal followers on Twitch, but these have mostly just been opportunities to share concept art and answer questions. For this year's E3, Ubisoft Montpellier packed a proper gameplay demo in its suitcase, one which showed off co-op play and some early combat and exploration systems - but it was another…
- Beyond Good & Evil 2 beta "end of next year" - 18 June 2018
A beta version of Beyond Good & Evil 2 is due for release towards the end of 2019, creator Michel Ancel has said. Ubisoft Montpellier's ambitious, currently-half-built open world multiplayer space opera thing got another showing at E3 this year - where we were treated to around 30 minutes of gameplay behind closed doors. We'll have more on what we saw shortly, but as impressive as BG&E2's tech currently is - and as lovely as that CGI trailer reintroducing BG&E1's Pey'J and Jade was - it was clear the game still had a long way to go. - Beyond Good & Evil 2 trailer shows return of Jade and Pey'j - 11 June 2018
Beyond Good & Evil 2 will include the main characters of Beyond Good & Evil, Ubisoft has just confirmed during its E3 press conference. It's a huge surprise, seeing as both were kept out of the game's reveal a year ago. Jade is described as an antagonist to the game's main cast. She's younger and fierce looking (BG&E2 is a prequel) and, even more surprisingly, appears to be allied with the BG&E enemies, the Domz. Pey'J is also back, as your ship's cook. He also looks a little younger. Read more…
- Beyond Good and Evil 2 gameplay shown for first time - 4 May 2018
Fans got a first glimpse at Beyond Good and Evil 2 gameplay last night in a developer livestream filled with information about the work-in-progress game. The footage shows multiplayer spaceship combat, on-foot melee fighting and sweary monkey shipmate Knox in action. It was the highlight of a half hour Twitch stream which featured creator Michel Ancel and others discussing the game and its development. Read more…
