- Hero's Hour 2 is coming! - 12 December 2025
It's been a long road since the Hero's Hour v2.0 update brought us to steam, and it's been some wonderful years of post-launch support. But recently, I've been putting together a team and started work on the next evolution of Hero's Hour: With so many sweeping changes, it had to be a sequel. You can jump over to see the steam page, trailer and wishlist it now! Right here: Hero's Hour 2.Not only will Hero's Hour 2 be a jump up in team size, it also goes to higher levels when it comes to quality - and thus development time. So it's not playable yet. But if you follow the steam page or the official Hero's Hour discord server, you'll be getting all the news about what I expect to exceed every parameter of Hero's Hour 1, once it's done. The team is composed of me, Lautaro Ariño who also worked on Hero's Hour 1, as well as two powerful indie developers known as Unleash the Giraffe. The project…
- Update v2.8.2 and Songs of Conquest Crossover - 5 September 2025
Some time ago, I started talking to a representative of Lava Potion studios - the team that made the excellent game, Songs of Conquest, one of the closest family members of Hero’s Hour, if we talk about game genres. Together we hatched a plan to add one of the beloved heroes from that game to Hero’s Hour. Cecilia thus joins the roster of Hero’s Hour heroes, becoming a General from the Order faction. She also gets her all own unit, the Conquest Minstrel. I always found the theme of musical units, which runs through the various Songs of Conquest factions, super interesting, and I’m happy to at least be able to have a nod towards that here. The Conquest Minstrel is a very rare unit, only really available for Cecilia - and playing her becomes a bit of a Challenge Run. On one hand, the Conquest Minstrels are really powerful support units - on the other hand, you’ll have to keep those few Conq…

- The Building Planner and v2.8.1 - 31 March 2025
The Release of the Homestead update went really well, overall. But the size of the update does seem to have led some parts of the update to have been done a bit sloppily. So I’m quickly working on a v2.8.1 update, currently live on the public_beta branch in steam, which I hope will assuage the transitional pains to the Homestead update. I’ve released three small updates into the public beta during the last week, and the most recent one has the rework of the building planner to look like the above. There’s a long list of fixes, including some important performance improvements on large maps, and bug fixes to critical crashes. But a large part of the v2.8.1 update will be a rework to the rework, so to say - an overhaul to the new building planner that should make it more clear and more straightforward to use. I know the new building planner is controversial. I still hold out hope that pol…
- v2.8 - The Homestead update out now! - 21 March 2025
The game is currently on sale on its own, as well as in a bundle together with our long-respected comrade game of Songs of Conquest. Additionally, the v2.8.0 Homestead update is also releasing today. Woohoo! The v2.8 update is a culmination of several different development processes that all come together into a single, large update. Looking over the final list of changes, it is comparable to both v2.6 and v2.7 in size. Town Reworks Faction Update Rogue Update Community Updates Spells Update If you’ve already read the previous post about v2.8, you might expect this to be nothing more than repetition. But this is not so. While I expected v2.8 to be mostly done when I wrote that post, several things then happened to expand the update. The newer parts of the v2.8 update will be tagged with (new!). First, let’s do a general overview of the different parts of the update, and then we’ll go in…
- Minor update live (v2.7.2) - and v2.8 in beta - 6 January 2025
I’ve been a bit late with v2.7.2. It’s actually been out and in beta for a while, but it has only been pushed live recently. It has 10 adjustments, 9 changes to map generation, 37 bug fixes and 5 modding changes. This is as an apology for allowing at least one sort of common bug into v2.7.1. When that happened, I knew I had to be more careful with v2.7.2. Thus, it’s taken longer - but it’s here, finally. Here are the full v2.7.2b patch notes. Below that, I’ll be writing about v2.8. v2.7.2b CHANGE LOG ADJUSTMENTS: Changed Pain Aura so it now actually doubles damage taken in combat instead of applying a -50% rallying aura. This is also a nerf Now the game remembers the last picked map so when exiting a map and opening the New Game menu, it automatically selects the last picked map Added a slight bit of variability in the power of Potent Soul, making it so that a unit such as the Shadeaman…
- The Progression Update is released! - 27 August 2024
Here we are - v2.7.0 is now live on the main branch! Concurrently, the game is now on sale to celebrate! Please note there are minor save compatibility issues (no crashes expected). If needed, you can access v2.6.3 via the Steam beta branch. The Progression update focuses on the two main forms of progression in the game: The maps and the heroes. This is a really large update, perhaps even larger than the v2.6 Great War update. Not only that, I believe this might be the best update the game has seen since v1.4. It changes so much of how the game is played in the direction of there being much more to explore - whether we are talking literally about map exploration or figuratively about exploring the various avenues of hero skill synergies. The headlines of the update are as follows: New, more compact maps with height differences, win conditions, and an open number of player slots New skil…
- Announcing v2.7 - The Progression Update - 24 June 2024
A couple of months ago, I wrote about the next update and the goals behind it. Not only have some of those goals shifted around a bit due to player feedback, but everything has become a lot more concrete. So, in this post I’ll go over the main features of the v2.7 update. First, you might want to hear about the timeline. Work on the update started around March, and the main features were more or less finished in the middle of May - with this post, the public pre-release is more-or-less stable, which it certainly has not been throughout the whole process. Now comes a last period of polish, bug fixes, and waiting for translations. I expect v2.7.0 to land in about 1-2 months. The Progression update is so named because it overhauls the two major systems of progress in the game: Hero levelling, specifically skills, and map exploration. However, this is a bit of an understatement, as you’ll s…

- v2.6.1, v2.6.2 and v2.6.3 - minor patches - 1 April 2024
Here are the patch notes for the various minor updates. v2.6.1 was only live on beta - v2.6.2 was released a couple of days ago, and v2.6.3 is a small hotfix patch on top of that. v2.6.1 Fixed a rare bug where an obelisk would generate an obelus ON TOP of the buried treasure Scrying achievement text now reads "Find an obelisk treasure with no clues apart from the first obelisk" Fixed a bug that might cause a boat or a resource to be generated on top of a coastline even when there was an empty tile available Rearranged credits so all of them are visible Added some new community credits and updated publishing credits Credits are now larger and better spaced Removed debug feature that made artifacts draw lines to other artifacts of the same set when holding backspace Fixed a crash related to defeating hostile pirates Fixed a crash that would occur when entering a battle while being tabbed…
- v2.6.0 - Great War out now! - 4 March 2024
So, it finally happened! Hero’s Hour version 2.6 is now complete and released. I know it has been almost a year since the last major update. You might even consider this the third Hero’s Hour anniversary release. First anniversary update was v2.0 and steam release - second anniversary was v2.4 and Rogue Realms release - and this third anniversary is v2.6 and the Great War update. The Great War update brings overhauls, updates and new content to rather a lot of systems. The three major areas of this update are: Hero classes and rare heroes Artifacts and artifact sets Battlefields Let’s take them one at a time and go over the various major improvements and the ideas behind them. Unlockable Heroes For the longest time now, Hero’s Hour has had a peculiar system where each faction had six heroes per faction - but then, each of those six heroes would have a copy with a different portrait and…

v2.5.1 patch notes CHANGES The game now shows mod loading progress The game now boots ~0.2 seconds faster (for a speedy computer) Wild town has the position of Archmage Tribunal and Archives of Magic flipped in their Rogue Realms town tree Pyre AI now uses the Infernal Gate the same way the player does Diplomacy now costs at least 100g Since steam mods don't have their names included anywhere readable by the game, steam mods can now put a file into the topmost folder (next to Factions, Custom Script folders etc) named "name Whatever.txt". If they do so, the game will use that name as the mod's name 20 skill trees have been changed Adjusted down the speed at which units turn redder by Bloodlust and Enrage Midas Touch hero skill now also works for bodyguard units With the Scaling strategy applied during combat, units with Leap now have a much higher rate of jumping over walls during siege…
- v2.5.0 update log - 10 May 2023
And now, I present v2.5.0 - the Balance update. If you read my update log after v2.4, you might notice a slight change of plans. Originally, I envisioned a quick balance update named v2.4.2 - but a lot of the balance changes needed to be more fundamental than just number changes, and together with some important community suggestions turned into new features / quality of life improvements, this balance update turned into a major update instead. This also means that I still have incomplete features in the works for the future - artifacts rework, alternate heroes rework, battlefield rework - and these are going to be part of the future v2.6 update instead. Now I can also prove what I’ve said previously: Game updates won’t be locked behind paying for DLC. I am continuing to support both the base game and the DLC side by side. At times, it might make it tough to do things such as balancing,…

- A message from the dev - ThingOnItsOwn - 9 December 2022
Hi all! This is ThingOnItsOwn, checking in and saying some words about what's going on, development-wise. It's been a long quiet period. I think the patch notes for v2.3, the update which just went live, is enough proof that this time was not spent idly. It adds 50 new spells, reworks to several magical skills, catapults and enhanced graphics, among a lot of other things. Actually, the patch notes for v2.3.0 ended up being so long and the list of changes so gargantuan, it became more and more difficult to figure out what's up and down. I regretted the speed at which v2.1 and v2.2 came out since I didn't have time for quality control and I let major bugs through. With v2.3, I think I adjusted a bit too far in the other direction. I'm currently planning to spend some weeks on improving v2.3 (v2.3.1 is already live), then start developing the things I have planned for v2.4, which should be…
