- Scene State and Transition 💾 - 17 May 2024
It's New Zealand screenshot Saturday! 📣 But I usually post a video hehe 🤭 Today, I’m showcasing a transition from one world scene to another. While it might seem simple, scene transitions are actually complex. For example, when we run a scene in Godot, the states of objects reset upon transitioning. Our goal is to ensure that previous scene states are retained when we return. If I cut down a tree or empty a chest in one scene, I want the changes to persist when we come back. World events, like our world clock, should also continue from the time we left the scene. The past few weeks have been exhausting as I’ve been working on efficiently saving states between scenes. Currently, this state-saving is happening in-memory, but I plan to save states into a file soon. That’s it for today! Thanks for all your feedback, suggestions and support 😊
- Painting a new world - 20 April 2024
Another week, another quick Mahika update! I'm out of town with my laptop! Don't have all my content video and text assets, but that won't stop me from developing Mahika and sharing dev updates 😁 Been fixing those pesky bugs 🪳 the past few days and improving the game's combat system. ⚔️ Now exploring the new tile map that Dyethrow made a few weeks back, and creating a more vibrant world to refresh my eyes (and probably yours too) from the previous darker background tones. Here's a sneak peek on how I do it in Godot Engine.

- Inventory system ~ Gem container 💎 - 8 March 2024
Hello again! Hope everyone is doing great. It's March already and autumn just arrived here in New Zealand! Another season, another Mahika update 💪 Been working hard getting the inventory system up and running, and the second part is now done and dusted. 👨🔧 We now have a working inventory layout and separated the inventory panel into 3 sections: Hotbar Item container and Gem container Items that can be equipped will first try to go to the Hotbar. Then all gems go to the Gem container. And everything else that can't go to the Hotbar or Gem container will end up in the Item container if there are slots available. Then, we repurposed the previously named "Gem panel" to become the "Magic panel". This Magic panel will show the equipped gem at the bottom slot, then show the available magic at the other slots, and then equip the first tier magic when the gem is equipped. The inventory can b…
- Combat Effects! 🐱👤 - 10 February 2024
Heya everyone! Hope you all are doing great! It's another month and another Mahika update! This time we added some combat effects! We've been tinkering with the enemy AI, making the enemies more tougher, so we thought it was best to add these effects to level the playing field. We added the knockback and stun effects to make combat a bit easier 😊 We also fixed a few bugs that you found! Thanks for all your feedback I apologize if the YouTube vlog still looks meh! Been doing vlogs for more than 5 years now... And... I'm still terrible at it 🤣🤣🤣 Hard to be creative when you do game dev after a day job... Creative juices are a bit low 😭 Nevertheless, we continue on! 💪 Thanks again for watching, reading and with your helpful feedback! Stay safe! Always have fun!
- It's a kind of magic! 🧙♂️ - 20 January 2024
Happy New Year! 🎉 Hope everyone had a great holiday! We had a great time and we're now refreshed, recharged and ready to take on another exciting year of game development! We kick-off this year with magic! 🪄 Yep, we finished adding magical ability to our character. It's simple magic casting for now but we're pumped up and super excited to make more magic for the game named after magic 😊 Thanks for all your support. Stay safe. Have fun and watch out for more updates!
- Exciting development updates before the holiday break! - 9 December 2023
Five weeks of game development! Time just flew by 😵 But we did smashed out heaps of stuff from our todo list 😊 We have a more polished character animation from walking, sword attack, pickup and carry item, and hacking animation. And more to come like harvesting animation, pull and push animation, and magic animations. We can also interact now with items and the environment. We have slime variation and environment animations like swaying trees! I did more stuff with Godot for the past 3 months versus a year of doing Mahika development in Unity! 😱 I’m personally excited on the development tasks ahead as this will define Mahika’s unique gameplay. That’s it for now. Appreciate your comments and feedback on the game! Thanks! Advance holiday greetings to everyone!
- Slime hunting! - 28 October 2023
Another week, another great progress for Mahika! Let's keep the momentum going! We got slimes! Tons of them! 🤣 Well just to fill up the tiny world and test out the first version of the enemy AI. Thanks to Dyethrow PIXEL for re-designing the slime. Looks great and more in the top down perspective. The attack state is now working and can deal damage to either enemy or player. Right now it deals 10 default damage. Still working on the sword animation and there are some collision / layering issue, but everything looks awesome! Also scaled down the hotbar and added a few prototype items to make the scene more appealing. That’s it! Please wish-list Mahika and I appreciate your comments or feedback. Thanks and till the next update. Stay safe! Have fun!
- First month update using Godot! - 21 October 2023
Was a tough 1 month transition from Unity to Godot! Settled down now and have a better understanding on how Godot works ~ UI, Node structure, Lifecycle, GDScript! YouTube tutorials, documentation and code samples really helped! This is what we've done so far with me doing 2-3 hours of after office game development using Godot 4.1. Character movement and animation now complete Character attack animation now complete Tilemap structure now complete with better understanding on how Godot arranges tiles and the features it provides Enemy simple chase player AI now complete Thanks to Dyethrow PIXEL for the awesome pixel art.
- New Game Engine and Updated Title - 3 October 2023
You may have heard about the Unity pricing issues 3 weeks ago. With that, we came to a decision to move to Godot. Many Unity game developers decided to wait out the storm and they got the concession. But even if Unity management decided to step back on the pricing scheme, we're still sticking to Godot especially now that we already have a good feel on what this open source engine can offer. We started porting the game for over 2 weeks now and we're loving the process! There are lots of tutorials online and Godot fits our pixel art style. The engine is very good when it comes to rendering and scaling pixel art. It's also an easy game engine to learn so we're confident we can get back on track with our development. We also wanted to announce that the game will no longer take the subtitle "Prologue" and will only use Mahika as its title. With this, the game will be released as a paid game…
- New Game Scenes and Art Palette - 4 September 2023
How's everyone doing?! We have some exciting news for you all! We've added new game scene screenshots to our steam page! And as you noticed, the character is looking great! Modelled from our pixel artist Dyethrow Pixel We also nailed down our favorite color palette that will suite Mahika's game style. Stay tuned for more screenshots as we're also restructuring the level generator!
- Procedural Dungeon Levels - 13 August 2023
It's been a while but we're back with exciting updates on Mahika : Prologue! First off, we got sidelined for a bit, but now back on track! However, we had to move Mahika’s release date for next year. All is good now as we’re starting to gain momentum again as we finished one important feature of the game ~ Procedural Level Generation! It was a fiddly task as we had to experiment with a couple of procedural patterns and redrawing the dungeon walls. In the end, it looks awesome! Dungeon levels are not much at this stage as we still work on procedural content generation. But expect a livelier update in the coming weeks once we chuck in the decorations, treasures, breakable items, and enemies! Hope you stay tune for more updates. Stay safe and always have fun!
- UI Graphic Improvements! - 22 April 2023
We're back with exciting updates on Mahika : Prologue! Most of it are UI graphic updates but exciting nonetheless. A major leap in the games look and feel 😁 On our previous update, we shared the new character builder screen. Now we have a lot more graphic improvements. The main menu now features a new night sky (with constellation) background, new button graphics, and color tweaks to the particle effects. The load character screen now looks consistent with the other screens, taking inspiration from other load character screen designs. We added the new character builder to the sequence. And we updated the graphics of the popup dialogue screens. We still have a couple of screens to update and we're re-organizing the Game and Level scenes. Hope you stay tune for more updates. Stay safe and always have fun!
- New Avatar Builder Design - 25 January 2023
We're back after a great holiday break, feeling refreshed and ready to rock! We started our brainstorming and design sessions again last week, and we have come up with some great concepts and artwork for our final UI look. On our previous update, we shared the new Menu design concept. Continuing on the new design path, we made the avatar builder fit the new look, lowering down click footprints, and improving its visual appeal. What do you think of the new design?
- Menu Design Update - 22 January 2023
Prior to the 2022 X'mas break, we were brainstorming and designing the final UI for Mahika. Sharing a sample Menu design to you all. What do you think?
