- Homefront developer only discovered hidden TimeSplitters 2 codes after game shipped - 12 April 2021
Last week, we heard there was a secret unlock code to make the full TimeSplitters 2 campaign playable in Homefront: The Revolution, opening up the game's well-known Easter egg which was previously thought to feature just a couple of classic TimeSplitters 2 levels. Days later, that secret unlock code was then rediscovered after the matter hit the headlines - and there were actually multiple codes, it was revealed, with some still having unknown functions. Eurogamer video producer Ian Higton played through Homefront: The Revolution to test one of these codes out - you can see him entering the code in the footage below, and trying out numerous TimeSplitters 2 story levels. Finally, Free Radical's cult classic, TimeSplitters 2, is available in remastered form on PC - inside Homefront: The Revolution . 2016's Homefront sequel has always had an arcade machine that let you play the first two levels of TimeSplitters 2 inside, but a developer recently revealed that the entire game was there all along, hidden behind an unlock code that had been lost to time. Now, just a few days later, players have figured out how to get access to the full game. According to developer Matt Phillips, who implemented the TimeSplitters 2 port, the full game was meant to be unlockable through some good, old-fashioned cheat codes. "The unlock code has been lost to time," Phillips says . "I don't have the notebook with it in anymore. Earlier this week, the internet was abuzz after a developer revealed a fully playable version of TimeSplitters 2 had been squirrelled away in Homefront: The Revolution. The only snag was the code required to unlock the easter egg had been lost to time - or so it was thought, until now. Word of the substantial easter egg first surfaced over the weekend , when former Homefront: The Revolution developer Matt Phillips revealed the TimeSplitters 2 cameo seen in Homefront's retail version - two story levels playable on an in-game arcade cabinet - was originally intended to be "fully playable" via an unlock code that was never publicly released. Unfortunately, "the unlock code has been lost to time," Phillips tweeted, explaining he no longer had the notebook with it in any more. We've known for years that Homefront: The Revolution hides an arcade cabinet where you can play a couple of levels from TimeSplitters 2 . Now, evidence has come to light that the entirety of TimeSplitters 2's campaign was designed to be fully playable in native 4K. Why can't you play the rest? Well, unfortunately, an unlock code designed to open up the rest of Free Radical Design's PS2 classic has been lost to time - via an unfortunate Discord ban. Let's rewind back to the 2014 release of Homefront: The Revolution, the work of Deep Silver Dambuster Studios.
