Latest Steam announcements
- Optional rules development - first update - 22 January 2026
The original board game rules supported several 'optional rules' which could be taken to use in any combination in addition to the standard rules. In this update groundwork is laid for implementing such optional rules in this digital version as well. However, this update actually implements only one of such rules, namely the possibility for the Axis player to use airpoints for bombing Soviet railroads, reducing the Soviet rail capacity on a turn by two points for each airpoint spent to this purpose.
- Usability improvements for scrolling and mini-map zooming - 27 October 2023
- Implement map scrolling via down-held-mouse-wheel-drag. - Implement zoom of mini-map via mouse wheel over it. - Improved scrolling from mini-map click to be smoother.
- Fixed some achievement trigger conditions - 29 September 2023
Fixed city-capturing achievements to not trigger when watching recording. Fixed achievement on almost-safe odds exchange ("Even Safe Can Be Sorry") to not trigger when attacker did not lose a unit after all due to all attackers being at least triple strength compared to defender total strength.
- Fixed a crash on recording playback + other defects - 10 May 2023
Recording playback would crash if a combat event included units on the very edge of the map - fixed. The Axis non-rail portion of the supply line was not correctly reduced to one on muddy weather (turn 5) - fixed. Supply sources on map edges (east / west) were not checked for being friendly - it was possible to deploy a reinforcement to a hex under enemy control - fixed. Hexes 1506 (Yaroslavl) and 1005 erroneously acted like they didn't have railroad, preventing units in those to move by rail - fixed.
- Fixed recording airpoints + die roll being covered - 3 May 2023
Recording showed erroneously separate events for air points usage within combat, which could cause remaining air point amounts to be wrong (even go negative). Swapped recording playback and combat ratio dialog locations on playback to prevent the playback form from covering the die roll video form on combats happening on the east side of the map.
- Fix reinforcements/destroyeds clearing on load game - 1 May 2023
Fix clearing lists of reinforcements and destroyed pieces on load game. Without this (especially after viewing a record playback) there could appear duplicate units as reinforcements.
- Fixed hexside between 1522 and 1622 and achievement triggering on recording - 29 April 2023
The hexside between 1522 and 1622 did not have a railroad in all cases, now fixed. The achievement "Moving On Rails" could be erroneously triggered when watching a recording playback, where the player who did the recording triggered the achievement.
- Fixed achievement "Against All Odds" not triggering - 29 April 2023
Fixed achievement "Against All Odds" not triggering even though the conditions were fulfilled.
- Playback of recorded events supported! - 25 April 2023
Major new feature in this update is the recording and playback support. This is especially helpful for players playing by email and thus not directly witnessing the actions of the other player. Now, when the game is saved, the save file also includes a recording of all the events happened since the preceding game load or new game initiation. When such a save file is loaded, the game asks whether the recording included in the save file should be replayed, and if so chosen, a playback will occur walking through the events included in the recording. After the recording is complete, the normal data load happens and play can continue as usual. Currently there are no advanced playback controls (pause / continue / change speed / stop) so once started, a recording has to be played to its end. This release also includes a few minor fixes: - Fixed combat ratio showing wrong (0:1 style) when using…
- Fixed rail capacity + added mouse wheel scrolling - 4 March 2023
Fixed rail capacity calculation. Now it correctly counts Soviet capacity to be 8 units of any type, meaning 8 units in total, not 8 units of every type (24 units in total) as it was before. Also for Axis units it now correctly allows 3 Corps units or 1 Group or 1 Army, where it previously allowed 3 Corps, 1 Group and 1 Army. Axis can also now utilize the special Finnish rail capacity in addition to the normal Axis rail capacity. Note: If a Finnish unit could use both the Finnish capacity and the Axis normal capacity, then it uses the Finnish capacity as long as it is available. In addition to previous scrolling methods (mini-map + scroll bars), the main map can now be scrolled with mouse wheel also. Rolling the wheel normally scrolls the map vertically, whereas rolling the wheel while holding the Shift key down scrolls the map horizontally.
- Improved guidance on video installation issues - 25 February 2023
To support (die roll) videos, the game may need to install a codec. It tries to do this automatically on initial startup or when the user runs the menu item Options->Video->Test and in resulting dialogs selects to (Re-)install the video codec. However, on modern Windows OS's this might not succeed when the application is not run as an Administrator, which it by default is not. In this patch, the error message on installation failure is expanded to contain a system error message when available (like 'The requested operation requires elevation') and two optional ways to try to workaround the issues: - Copying the installer executable to a different location before closing the dialog, and later trying to run it manually (as an Administrator). - Running the game executable manually (not via Steam) as an Administrator to get through the video codec installation issues, after which the game a…
- Fixed snowy weather supply portion shortening to only affect Axis - 11 February 2023
Fixed snowy weather non-rail supply portion shortening to only affect Axis. Before it erroneously affected Soviets too.
- Fixed reinforcements movement halving by weather + shock unit movement status - 10 February 2023
Fixed reinforcements and replacements not having movement halved on turn 5 (mud), fixed 'moved' status to not reset on combat phase start (affects shock units - without this fix they erroneously got full attack strength even when they had moved during the previous movement phase.
- Fixed terrain errors (rough/forest) on hexes 1511, 1512, 1518, 1618 and 1619. - 7 February 2023
The southern edge of the rough area northwest of Moscow was erroneously handled as if it were forest (hexes 1511 and 1512). The small forest north of Minsk was erroneously handled as if it were rough (hexes 1518, 1618 and 1619). Now both of these have been fixed.
- Improve advance/exchange dialog usability by adding a selected piece preview. - 29 January 2023
Improved advance/exchange dialog usability by adding a selected piece preview to the bottom left corner. Also made some tweaks to hopefully reduce / remove the cases where the background image is rendered above the text strings, preventing selection.
- Fixed unit details view in Combat Ratio Breakdown Dialog to be cleared on close. - 29 January 2023
In the Combat Ratio Breakdown Dialog the middle section shows a detail graphic from any unit selected in the lists. If a unit was selected and details shown, then the dialog closed, on a subsequent opening of the dialog, this previously shown unit was still shown in the details area, even when nothing was selected on the lists. This is now fixed so that the unit details area always starts off as empty, corresponding to the nothing-selected status of the lists.
- Fixed achievement trigger criteria for west/east edge reaching. - 27 January 2023
The 'Are We In Berlin Soon?' and 'Did We Miss Moscow?' achievements didn't trigger on correct columns - the first was triggered on column 28 only when it was supposed to be triggered on columns 27 and 28, while the second was triggered on column 2 when it was supposed to be triggered on column 1. These are both now fixed.
- Steam Achievements Support - 22 January 2023
When used via Steam, the game can integrate to Steam (achievements) using the Steamworks SDK. To access this, the game on execution extracts two necessary DLLs to its runtime directory. These DLLs are called steam_api.dll and libSteamWrapper.dll. If the extraction or usage of these fails for some reason, the game should be able to run anyway, with only the Steam integration (achievements) disabled. - Note on achievements: The achievements are received by the player, who is playing at the time of the achievement occurrence. This has significance when two different players (Steam accounts) are playing by email or similar. Most notably, when the game is about to be finished ('End Game' is clicked), the game asks whether to save at that point. Since that happens on the Soviet player's turn, it is recommended to save the game at this point and then send the save file to the German (Axis) pla…
- Fixed mini-map scrolling when whole map dimension (x/y) visible already - 6 January 2023
Fixed a division by zero error which happened when doing mini-map scrolling when whole map dimension (x/y) was visible already
- Fix release status in About dialog - 6 January 2023
Fixed the release status in the About dialog to correctly show as 'Released' without an expiration date.
