- Camera Behavior Improvements on the Steam Deck - 14 December 2024
I've been porting Mooselutions to iOS. This occasion made revisit the game's camera behavior on the Steam Deck. I was never a fan of the player-centered camera on the Steam Deck version of the game. To be completely honest, it was thrown together rather quickly. Only after launching on Steam did I then realize the game has a player base on the Steam Deck. I scrambled to put something in as quickly as I could, knowing I would come back later and improve upon it. The old camera behavior was rather simple. It placed the player in the center of the screen and simply drew whatever was around the player. While this can work for many types of games, it's not ideal for a puzzle game like Mooselutions where it's very useful to see as much of the puzzle as possible. On the Windows and Mac OS versions where there is plenty of screen real estate, I just show the entire puzzle. I can't do that on th…
- My friend Demetri plays Mooselutions - 18 November 2024
We talk about puzzle design with some interesting banter about user interface / experience design.
- Steam Deck Graphics Improvements - 10 November 2024
I was getting the game ready for Super MAGFest and the Turn Based Carnival sale, and I was testing one of my builds on the Steam Deck. I popped over to play some of my other favorite pixel art games (Axiom Verge specifically). I noticed the pixel art in that game and was impressed with how crisp it looked. I then took a second look at Mooselutions and figured something must be wrong because it wasn't quite as crisp. (For those of you who are super nerdy and technical, Mooselutions uses a pixel art scaling shader that does bilinear interpolation to blend ever so slightly, but only at texel boundaries. Inside of a texel, the shader samples the texel color, resulting in non-blurry pixel art scaling at non-integer multiples of the texture. It is very convenient because it means I don't have to letterbox the game and can arbitrarily scale textures so long as I preserve the aspect ratio.) Any…
- Juice the Moose Update - 7 November 2024
Since Moosleutions got into both MAGFest and the Turn-Based Carnvial sale, I thought it would be nice to improve upon some areas of the game that I found lacking. The main thrust of the update has been the desire to add more "juice" to the game, to make it feel more lively. With that goal in mind, this recent update includes the following juicy bits: - A totally new set of player animations - A camera shake effect when the moose hit obstacles in the terrain - A particle effect when the moose charge through grass and leaves - A particle effect when the moose hit trees - A bright new summer theme If you haven't purchased Mooselutions yet, don't buy it right now. Wait for the Turn-Based Carnival of the Steam fall sale, which we will be participating in.
- Steam Deck Controls - 29 February 2024
I just uploaded a small update that makes the controls on Steam Deck fully native. They should just work right out of the box. Thanks to Casey Muratori for pointing out that you can just use XInput on Windows. When the game is running via Proton it will act as if the Steam Deck controller is an XBox controller.
- Steam Deck Improvements - 27 February 2024
When Mooselutions first launched, I knew about the Steam Deck. I figured it might be cool to eventually launch the game there, but it would require porting the game over to Linux, and I didn't have time to do that before (or after) the game went live. I had no idea there's this thing called Proton, which allows you to run pretty much any Steam game that also runs on Windows. Needless to say, it came as a surprise to me that people were even able to play the thing, let alone that some of them were having a good time doing it. I wasn't able to do much about the Steam Deck while I was in the hospital recovering from heart valve surgery, but once the doctor cleared me to drive, I made it my mission to see what's going on. I met up with a friend in town who happened to have a copy of the game running on his Steam Deck. The game mostly played how it should. It's just that the puzzles looked r…
- Navigation Redesign - 17 January 2024
Hi folks, I just finished the last update for a little while. It contains a few often requested quality of life improvements. 1. The menus are redesigned. Now you can access the menu from inside of a level and from the world map. 2. World map access from the main menu. If you are in a puzzle, you can go to the main menu to access the world map. (Note: you can also access the world map at any time by pressing 'M' on the keyboard or 'X' on most game controllers). 3. Volume controls follow a logarithmic pattern for additional precision. 4. A bunch of tiny improvements to the way the menus and world map feel when you use them. I have a major surgery next week (don't worry, I will be totally fine), and it will require a short hospitalization. If you have any questions at all during this time, please head over to the game's Discord, and my friends will help you out. Thanks so much for playing…
- Volume Controls and Non-Destructive Reset - 14 January 2024
Hi folks, I just updated the game to support music and sfx volume controls. Your volume settings are saved with each session and synced over Steam cloud. I also fixed the non-destructive reset bug and brought non-destructive reset back into the game. Next up some much-needed improvements to the game's pause menu and map navigation layout. I'm going to make the pause menu accessible from every screen in the game, which ought to fix some of the confusion you've rightly been experiencing when navigating between the game's levels and map. Thanks Andrea for pointing this out! Enjoy playing, and don't hesitate to reach out if you have any feedback
- Steam Cloud Support - 14 January 2024
I've updated the game's Steam settings to support Steam cloud. Progress you make in the game will get synced to Steam cloud after a play session, and it's cross-platform. If you start a game on Mac OS, you can resume it on Windows. No fuss. Lots of muss.
- Rollback to January 5th version - 13 January 2024
Hi Folks. My apologies, but I had to roll the game back to the January 5th version. A player discovered a bug in the new undo system (thanks Diane!) that allows you to cheese every puzzle in the game. So for now the restart behavior will remain destructive until I push the update that fixes it. I'm planning to release a major update this week, just before my upcoming heart valve procedure after which I will be temporarily unable to work on the game (1-2 weeks of down time). It will have volume controls, steam cloud support, and a fix to the bug Diane found. Thanks as always for playing, and don't hesitate to reach out if you find any other issues.
- First post-launch update - 8 January 2024
Hi folks, The first official update for Mooselutions addresses the following: 1.) Trying to enter a level while moving on the world map loads the level where you were, not the level you're going to. This was fixed by simply preventing the player from entering a level while walking on the map. 2.) There was an occasional crash that could get triggered by undoing in the middle of a long moose charge. It had to do with animation state machines not being reset at the time of the undo. 3.) One of the winter puzzles wasn't constrained enough and was easily cheesed. The update adds a constraint that prevents the cheese from being an allowable Mooselution. 4.) Restart is now non-destructive. It is considered "just another move," which means you can now rewind past your restart to the state before the restart.
