- Demo v6 - Exposed Ship Designer - 25 August 2026
Hello everybody, once again! As some of you know, I have been developing Stellar Insurgency for the past several years as a hobby side project. Development was put on hold for a few months, mainly because I got lazy, but I’m finally back and working on the game again. My goal with Stellar Insurgency is to create a procedural galaxy with emergent gameplay driven by simulation. Procedural generation is used to build the galaxy's “stage” automatically, including planets, star systems, factions, and other elements. The goal is to create a galaxy that feels alive and different from one playthrough to another, rather than simply generating a random collection of locations.Over the past few weeks, I have improved many parts of the game, but the most interesting development has been the Ship Designer. The Ship DesignerThe Ship Designer has gradually become a much more interesting part of the game,…

- Procedural exploration, demo v5.0 and more - 29 December 2025
This update expands Stellar Insurgency’s procedural foundation with planetary biomes, environmental and social hazards, and fully procedural exploration. Planets and colonies now function as dynamic simulation nodes that influence crew safety, trade, and faction stability, while auto-generated planetoid sprites further reinforce a uniquely generated galaxy each playthrough. These systems work together to create emergent, unscripted events that make every run meaningfully different.Welcome to another development update for Stellar Insurgency.Update HighlightsBiomes and environmental hazardsProcedural explorationAuto-generated planetoid spritesDemo v5.0 releaseMy long-term goal is to create a fully procedural galaxy that supports genuine emergent gameplay.Procedural generation uses rules and mathematical systems to construct the stage itself—star systems, planets, colonies, and factions—e…
- Construction, Warp Gates & Worm holes - 18 November 2025
Construction - Warp Gates & Worm holesWarp Gates and Wormholes have always been cornerstones of speculative fiction, embodying the dream of instant travel across impossible distances. They represent the ultimate triumph over the constraints of light speed, allowing civilizations to bridge galaxies and reshape the course of destiny—or face its terrifying risks. In this update, these concepts transition from fiction to core gameplay, offering you new strategic horizons and dangers to master.1. Construction SystemThis is an important new feature. A Spacecraft fitted with a Construction Beam module can now build structures. Activating the "Construction" button on a ship reveals available projects, starting with the Warp Gate.Beginning construction consumes the required resources from the ship's cargo. Every project needs some time to complete, during which the structure is non-functional. T…
- Stellar Insurgency - DEMO v4.3 and more - 16 September 2025
Welcome to another update for Stellar Insurgency!Stellar Insurgency - DEMO v4.3 and more.Trading – Trade Routes & Colony TypesStar systems are linked by trade routes that form the backbone of interstellar commerce. Trading follows a supply and demand system, where commodities move along these routes to meet the needs of colonies. Trade routes can be disrupted if cargo ships traveling them are destroyed, creating shortages and destabilizing local economies. Beyond established routes, goods can also be exchanged through wandering traders—or acquired through pirates. Each colony has a type and a size, which together determine its production, consumption, and strategic value.Colony TypesMining ColonyAgricultural WorldIndustrial HubTrade HubCore WorldMilitary BaseFrontier ColonyPenal ColonySmuggler's OutpostColony SizesOutpostSettlementColonyCity-StatePlanetary MetropolisEach colony type has…

It includes all previous updates and introduces the ability for players to travel to a neighboring solar system. Realistic Star Density Distribution The star density distribution now aligns with the density patterns of a particle-simulated spiral galaxy. This realistic approach is based on the Density Wave Model, ensuring that the galaxy's structure mirrors scientifically accurate principles. Accessible stars are distributed according to this density, m…
- Stellar Insurgency - More Exploration - 25 November 2024
Welcome to another update for Stellar Insurgency! In this post, I’ll discuss the new additions to the three-stage exploration system introduced in the previous dev diary. Stage One: Scanning Stage Two: Probing Stage Three: Away Team Exploration To proceed to the second or third stages, players must first complete a scan of the target. The three-stage exploration process has now been expanded to include not only planets but also spaceships and other objects within each solar system, adding new layers of depth and discovery. Similarly, in the third exploration stage, players now have the option to board an enemy ship using a boarding probe or transporter—provided their fleet is equipped with one of these components and the enemy ship’s shields are lowered or inactive. Additionally, players can assign ranked crew members (such as a captain or commander) to the exploration team. These high-…
- Revamped research screen, Update on Exploration System and more - 15 October 2024
In this update, the tech tree and research screen have been revamped, and the exploration aspect of the game has been significantly enhanced, among other improvements. The tech tree has been revamped and divided into five distinct categories in the Research screen. 1. Fleet & Logistics Fleet Logistics Crew Efficiency Jump Drive Efficiency 2. Propulsion & Navigation Engines Sensors Jump Inhibitor 3. Support & Utility Systems Reactor Tractor Beam Exploration Techs Other, like universal translator 4. Defensive Systems Point Defense Stealth Field Shields Armor 5. Weapons Systems Laser Turrets Rail Turrets Missiles & Rockets Flak guns and small space-fighter guns Currently, there are 84 technologies in the tech tree, with more planned for the future. The technologies are separated in efficiency technologies and component technologies. When a technology related to a spaceship component is res…
- Tech Tree - 13 September 2024
Researching technology takes time (as indicated by the number of days next to the tech's name) and requires a tech officer to begin. If multiple officers are assigned, research progresses faster. Most technologies are self-explanatory and include fleet, engine, sensor, defense, and weapon upgrades. When a technology that unlocks a component (e.g., a weapon) is researched, its blueprint becomes available in the fleet screen, where it can be synthesized if the necessary raw materials are in the fleet's cargo bays. Researching efficiency technologies offers various benefits. For example, 'Engineer Efficiency' allows fleet engines to be installed or switched without an engineer. Similarly, other efficiency technologies apply to different aspects of fleet management. If 'Crew Coordination' is researched and the fleet has all required officers, components can be installed or switched without…
- Stellar Insurgency Demo v3.0 is out - 1 September 2024
A grid-based component system has been developed, allowing players to place components on a grid representing the spacecraft's hull. Each component contributes either positive energy, like reactors, or negative energy, like engines. Players must strategically arrange components to maintain a positive overall energy net, or some may operate sub-optimally. Damage to each cell is determined by the direction and impact point of incoming projectiles or laser bolts.
- Major Update - 1 January 2024
Hey everyone, happy New Year! Just wanted to say a big thanks for all your awesome support. Exciting developments are underway for Stellar Insurgency. Over the past few months, I've dedicated myself to a significant upgrade, moving from the previous basic component system to a refined cell / grid-based design for ship components and implementing a damage system based on cells. Overview Each ship will boast a unique design, with the number of cells tailored to its size. For instance, capital ships will feature significantly more cells and a myriad of potential variations for component placement compared to smaller ships. In this revamped system, reactors generate energy, while other ship components consume it. Every ship must possess one or more reactors to meet its energy requirements. Engines, vital for movement, find their place usually at the rear of the ship. Should the total energy…
