- Steamboat Willie entering the public domain is great, but can't we do better than edgy horror games? - 10 January 2024
Disney as a company has done plenty of terrible things, what corporation hasn't, but for art as a whole easily one of the worst is the support it put behind the Copyright Term Extension Act , otherwise known as "The Mickey Mouse Protection Act." It essentially increased how long copyright can be held over a property before it enters the public domain. You've probably recently seen that even Disney wasn't able to stop the earliest incarnation of Mickey Mouse, Steamboat Willie, from entering the public domain, meaning that anyone can now use that specific version of the character however they like. So of course the first big project to come out of it was an overly-edgy horror game that might have some Neo-Nazi dog whistles in it . Am I surprised? No. Am I disappointed? Of course, but not even just for the obvious reasons. Possible Nazi connections aside (the devs are changing the name and…

- It only took one day for that Mickey Mouse horror game to stir up some serious controversy - 3 January 2024
The developers of recently announced horror game Infestation 88 have changed its name to Infestation: Origins in response to accusations that a number of elements of it could be interpreted to have Neo-Nazi connotations. The game, which is set to become available via early access at some point in 2024, features a slasherised version of Steamboat Willie , an early version of Mickey Mouse that’s just become public domain. However, the details about it released so far have raised some eyebrows online, leading developer Nightmare Forge Games to issue a response. A number of the aspects of the game that have drawn criticism for their potential Nazi connotations are outlined in this Twitter thread by streamer Josh 'Anoriand' Fagundes. It’s the combination of things like the use of the number 88, which can be used as a numerical code signifying the phrase "Heil Hitler", in the game’s title and…
- Early Mickey Mouse is now public domain, instantly becomes a horror game slasher - 2 January 2024
Now that the calendar has flipped over to 2024, the earliest version of Mickey Mouse has become public domain . Naturally, this has led it to be incorporated into an indie horror game faster than you can say the phrase ‘predictable jumpscare’. Yep, poor Steamboat Willie, whom you might remember from a certain 1928 animated short fil m named after him, has been cast from Walt Disney’s loving arms into those of the masses. As happened with Winnie the Poo h last year, the scare-seeking contingents of society couldn’t wait to turn young Mickey into something that’ll no doubt fill the underpants of streamers worldwide on a regular basis once it releases. Meet Infestation 88, a “co-op horror in which you're an exterminator treating sinister infestations caused by twisted versions of classic characters and urban legends.” Here’s its first trailer, released yesterday to accompany th…
