After a long day of intense conversation, my party lay their heads to rest in a tidy hostel on the high cliffs of Sagus - a port for airships where homes slip regularly into the sea. Though the inn is open to the air and its rooms rest on long stilts that disappear into cloud below, Tranquility's Rest is the first true calm we've found in the bustle and intrigue of the city. Perhaps that's thanks to Tranquility herself, a honey-voiced proprietor and mutant, stretched tall as if from too many lie-ins. Perhaps it's the pheromonal perfume she wears. - As Dusk Falls, Inside, the best Watch Dogs game and more coming to Xbox Game Pass soon - 18 July 2022
It's the middle of the month, just about, which means a fresh wave of Xbox Game Pass games, this time around including the best Watch Dogs . A smaller crop than the batch of games that dropped on Game Pass in the first half of the month, but we've got a good mix of small and big titles to choose from (via Xbox Wire ). The first set of games for the latter half of July will arrive tomorrow, July 19, which is where you can get stuck in with some interactive drama, and some stylish hacking. First off is As Dusk Falls , which is a day one release on Game Pass. This one comes from developer Interior/ Night that "explores the entangled lives of two families across thirty years," and will be available on cloud, console, and PC. It got shown off at last month's Xbox Games Showcase , and in it you'll make choices that can have big impacts on the character's lives. Read more

Even in my seasonally confused state of Texas, the weather has tended towards the chilly and left me with little excuse not to have a kettle boiling interminably as I layer on socks and pull the biggest comforter from the top of the closet. But this presents a problem likely familiar to other cozy connoisseurs: how does one game while properly bundled? I will admit it does limit possibilities considerably. Have You Played? is an endless stream of game retrospectives. One a day, every day, perhaps for all time. Torment: Tides Of Numenera is apparently a ‘thematic successor’ to Planescape: Torment , which, as descriptors go, is even more woolly than ‘spiritual successor’. Translated into jargon talk, this is a single-player RPG with an isometric perspective, set in a part-fantasy part-steampunk universe, and it’s so story driven that it’s basically like reading a book. - InXile acquired by Microsoft: the interview - 19 November 2018
On Saturday 10th November, Microsoft announced buying Californian role-playing game developers inXile Entertainment and Obsidian Entertainment . Two studios independent which had fought for survival for a decade-and-a-half were now under the Xbox umbrella. The message from Microsoft was reassurance: don't worry, nothing will change, we won't kill them - they'll continue to make the games you love, only they'll have more resources and support available to "fully realise" their ambitions. Nevertheless, questions remained. Both companies are tied up in crowdfunding - particularly inXile, which has Wasteland 3 still to deliver - so what happens there? And what happens to promised PlayStation 4 versions of games - can they still fulfil those as Xbox studios? Moreover, will they leave isometric games behind in favour of glitzier projects? The rumours were true: Microsoft Studios is buying Obsidian Entertainment . It's also, in an unexpected twist, buying inXile Entertainment. The acquisitions were announced during the X018 fan event in Mexico today. In a statement sent to Eurogamer, Microsoft said of Obsidian: "As one of the industry's premiere RPG developers, we couldn't be more excited about the opportunity to add their expertise to Microsoft Studios, while enabling the studio to preserve its unique culture and build on its talent and vision to fully realise their creative ambitions." The Humble Unity Bundle , featuring games built with the Unity game engine, is maybe not the most excitingly-named Humble Bundle of all time, but it's definitely one of the better packages to come along in a very long time. For $1, you'll get Oxenfree and Aer: Memories of Old, plus Inventory Pro, UFPS: Ultimate FPS, and FlowCanvas, which are not actually games but asset packs from the Unity Asset Store.  Things start to get interesting when you beat the average price, which is already over $10. In the mid-to-late 2000s, publishers abandoned the CRPG genre an acronym describing the very specific genre of video games adapted from tabletop RPGs to be played on computers which a decade earlier had been a cornerstone of PC gaming. They were more interested in accessible, console-friendly series like Mass Effect and The Elder Scrolls , and PC-centric RPGs all but died out. Then, around 2012, RPGs made a comeback, largely thanks to the rise of crowdfunding and an endless well of nostalgia. Text-heavy RPG Torment: Tides of Numenera is free to play until Sunday, and if you want to play it beyond that then it's on sale for equal to its lowest ever price.  The 60% price cut means it's just $18/£14, which is a damn good deal. Both the free weekend and sale are on Steam , and the sale ends on Monday. If you've never played Torment and you're a fan of old-school isometric RPGs , then you should really give it a try. As Chris said in his review , it captures the magic of the original Planescape: Torment—perhaps the best RPG of all time —by placing thought over action. Combat features, but you can play the whole thing non-violently, talking your way out of tough situations. There's a lot of text, and you'll get the most out of Torment if you dive into the reading, which will help you make connections between different storyline…
