  aaaahhh i accidentally included data files from a pre-expansion build, but with a new executable so expansion stuff was crashing! should be fixed now. i think i've fixed some of the display issues but not all, still testing! also, by the way, i'm working on a sequel: 868-BACK you can pre-order / crowdfund it now if you want! it's a big new game. more on that in a bit!

I think difficulty is one of the most under-solved problems in game design. We’ve barely started to break out of the assumptions and principles that were concocted to keep people putting quarters into arcade machines. So I’m excited and delighted when a game comes up with something smarter than Easy/Normal/Hard, and 868-Hack is one of those rare games. (more…)

• Soul Axiom escapes Early Access this month - 4 February 2016

  I do like to see a finished game. Wales Interactive's Soul Axiom is escaping Early Access on February 29, that leap day providing the devs 24 hours' more work in defiance of temporal laws. Throughout development, Soul Axiom has been pretty darn well received. It's a puzzle-cum-thriller deal, set in a future in which human souls have been uploaded to a platform called Elysia. Death doesn't hold and of course there are darker corners of the human psyche that are best left well alone. Soul Axiom's shifting scenes and uncertain reality put me in mind of Ether One's poke around the mind of a dementia patient, which I loved .

  Relax, dear reader, and enjoy the best new trailer you will see today. It's the launch trailer for 868-Hack, Michael Brough's hacking roguelike. The game has finally made the jump from iOS to Steam, and to celebrate, this excellent video now exists. Pro-tip: parodying that anti-piracy trailer is always funny. Always . 868-Hack is a game where you steal data, using the programs you collect as abilities to take down the system's defences. It started life as the free 7DRL prototype 86856527 . This paid-for Steam version makes numerous changes and additions to both individual programs and core mechanics. It's difficult, but then, it's a roguelike from the developer of Corrypt . Of course it's difficult.
