- Greenfeet Haven Dev Report - Happy new year 2025! - 10 January 2025
Hello, dear Greenfeet friends! May the grass be soft under your steps! Here's the development progress for the past month. This is a synthesis of my weekly blog posts. Fuel System Campfires now consume items tagged as "flammable." Of course, some items are more desirable than others. Generally, you'd prefer to burn a log, but in desperate times, why not burn a wooden plank or even a wooden statue? Auto Tools Thanks to playtest feedback, it became clear that the tool system was too complex to use. Manually managing equipment required too much micro-management and was hard for new players to grasp. What's more frustrating than a tree left uncut while the axe is lying right next to it? Now, the Greenfeet will automatically equip themselves with the best tools for the tasks at hand. You can still specialize workers by setting restrictions: for instance, preventing a lumberjack from using a…
- Greenfeet Haven Dev Report - November 2024 - 30 November 2024
Hello, dear Greenfeet friends! May the grass be soft under your steps! Here's the development progress for this month. This is a synthesis of my weekly blog posts. It’s been a few weeks since I managed to release the closed alpha version. I’ve received a lot of feedback: written, recorded, and through the in-game feedback system. Thank you all once more! It has taught me a lot about both the current weak points and the strong points of the game. Tutorial The game now features a skippable tutorial. It helps you understand the basics and will occasionally trigger to provide more context on advanced topics. It’s been designed to be as brief as possible, so you won’t spend 30 minutes reading to understand what’s going on. Improved Exploration The exploration mechanic has undergone another iteration, bringing significant gameplay and aesthetic changes. The fog of war has been redesigned to l…
- Greenfeet Haven Dev Report - October 2024 - 19 October 2024
Hello, dear Greenfeet friends! May the grass be soft under your steps! It's been a month since the last progress report. Much has been accomplished since then! Exploration The map is now hidden at first. You will have to send greenfeet out on exploration missions to reveal more and more of it. Each explored zone will yield its own surprises: new biomes, new resources, encounters... The system is now working and only requires more content to be added in the coming weeks. Feedback and visual improvements Great efforts were put into the visual aspect of the game to make it feel more credible, alive, and dynamic. Discovering a new item now produces a visual notification. Greenfeet moving through plants will make them bounce. Greenfeet will now get close to items they are interacting with, thanks to the new "intra-tile" movement system. Early game content The first technological tier of the…
- Greenfeet Haven Monthly Dev Report - 13 September 2024
Hello, dear Greenfeet friends! May the grass be soft under your steps! Autumn is looming here in France, and after some holidays in August, I've been back at work on the game full-speed for the past two weeks. Big changes have come to Greenfeet Haven, and more are on the way! New crafting system First, I've revamped the crafting system, ditching the old "discovery" mechanic for a more dynamic and experimental approach. Now, every workshop offers unique actions, and players can combine items or apply actions to them to see what happens. For instance, what would you get if you combined a sharp stone with a branch? What would happen if you apply the "crush" action to wheat seeds? The sense of discovery is more natural and rewarding. You can read more about this on the dev blog: Weekly Progress #32 Improved pathfinding and proximity checking On a more technical note, I've finally tackled th…
