- Microsoft have open-sourced 3D Movie Maker by popular demand - 5 May 2022
In a curious bit of historical preservation, Microsoft have released the source code for 3D Movie Maker, a fondly remembered piece of software from 1995. You might best know it from Jerma985's oft-memed Rat Movie (pictured ↑ above). This comes amidst a wave of source code releases for Argonaut Games' BRender engine, which was also used by games including Carmageddon 1 & 2, Privateer 2: The Darkening, Queen: The eYe, and and Croc. This could lead to fan-updated versions which are easier to run on modern computers. Read more
- Wreckfest's latest update adds Carmageddon tracks and zombies - 3 August 2021
Wreckfest is a racing game that's as much about slamming into scenery as careful cornering, so today's tie-in with Carmageddon is a perfect match. It's a free update which adds two new tracks, Bleak City and Devil's Canyon, from the original zombie-smashing racing game, as well as the Eagle-R car and swarms of pixellated zombies to burst. “We’re doing an 8chan AMA and we have no idea why,” announced THQ Nordic on their Twitter account earlier this evening. If you’re not aware, 8chan is an imageboard website which has been de-listed from Google search results for hosting “suspected child abuse content,” and which is associated with Swatting and Gamergate. THQ Nordic’s marketing director has since apologised and claimed ignorance, but both are hard to believe. (more…)

In their ongoing mission to own PC gaming 1992-2006, publishers THQ Nordic are now buying the intellectual property rights to Carmageddon. Like when they bought Alone In The Dark earlier this year, THQ Nordic (who even bought the “THQ” half of their name) say part of their ownership will, naturally, involve thinking about maybe making “sequels and new content”. Which they’ve gone on to do with many of the games they bought. Carmageddon isn’t quite so gone-and-forgotten, considering creators Stainless Games released a crowdfunded sequel to their Death Race-inspired smash-o-driver only a few years back, but it started in 1997 and so THQ Nordic must own it. As part of the thrust towards the full release of Carmageddon: Reincarnation on 21st May, we have been running multiplayer lobbies every weekday night and inviting the Carmageddon community to join us in some @ss kicking Carmageddon FUN! The lobby is active from 5pm to 6pm BST on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, and is hosted by Stainless Games resident Carmageddon car crushing star SAM. The lobby is transmitted on the Carmageddon Twitch TV channel, and if you can’t join in the game, then join in the Twitch chat and hurl some abuse at Sam! http://www.twitch.tv/carmageddon So, this is an open invitation for all you Carmafans out there to come along and join the wrecking party.
