There was still plenty we wanted (and needed) to improve. You stayed with us while we worked on the game, told us what wasn’t working, and helped us see where the right changes could make a real difference. - Patch 1.08 - 9 July 2026
Hey everyone! It's finally time to pay off the biggest chunk of technical debt we've built up over the whole development. Some of you probably know that the game used to eat a huge amount of memory, which could lead to crashes, long loading times and other unpleasant stuff. To fix this, we had to optimize most of our assets, clear a lot of junk out of the project and completely rework some of the memory-related tech under the hood. It's a very long and, honestly, incredibly exhausting process — but it was absolutely worth it. Just look at the results: We managed to cut almost half of the RAM usage and significantly reduce video memory usage (and the most important thing — solve the problem with crashes due to memory, like when entering the city). On top of that, the game now takes up 10 GB less space. Even though these changes are mostly about resource usage, in some cases we got a perf…
- Dude, where's my XP? - 29 April 2026
Hey! Quick heads-up about the new leveling system on existing saves (progress bar reset).TL;DR:Everything's fine, no XP was taken away — what you're seeing is just a visual update to the new calculation system that kicks in once you hit the old/new XP threshold. Your progress is safe.A bit more detail:In 1.07 we adjusted the XP gain system, which previously reset to zero on level-up — effectively creating a soft cap around level 20 (yeah, that was never the plan).XP now carries over as you gain new levels, but for readability we still display it starting from 0 relative to the previous threshold. So if you needed 19,000 XP to level up, had 13,790, and then gained 710 more — once you hit the leveling table threshold, that exact amount stays intact, but the bar resets to the new values without losing any progress (0 out of 4,500, still 19,000 total). This is purely visual — after leveling…
- Update 1.07 is now live - 27 April 2026
Hi everyone! Patch 1.07 is now live! This is probably our biggest and most feature-rich patch to date. Aside from fixing various bugs — negative stats (like attack speed), crafting and inventory issues, crashes in the city, and all sorts of other annoying things — we’ve added plenty of gameplay improvements and new game content!New ContentHairstyles and BeardsThe first content update is cosmetic. Tristan now has more hairstyle and beard options, so he can be rightfully called the dandiest man on Grayshaft! Or just terrify even seasoned hobsters with his looks — however you want to play it.\Primestriders’ Dungeon (Recommended Level: 10+)The second free expansion is a completely new 10-level dungeon with tough battles and a unique reward for clearing it!This dungeon was discovered in an abandoned mine near Nerest’s house. An ominous portal in the ritual halls beckons to adventurers. Prepar…

Hello everyone! We’re continuing to actively work on improvements and bug fixes. A huge thank you to everyone who shares feedback, comments, and bug reports with us. 1.06 Highlights:Feedback & Crash ReportingAn in-game feedback form has been added (accessible from the menu). - Happy New Year from the Of Ash and Steel team! - 1 January 2026
Blessings upon you all in the new year!
- Patch 1.05 is out now - 19 December 2025
Hello!Patch 1.05, featuring the updated loading system, is now available. This update took us a bit longer than we would have liked, but it was important for us to ensure full compatibility between old and new save files and to ensure everything works as intended. With this in place, we can now fully focus on tackling the next set of tasks. Patch 1.05 OverviewWhen launching version 1.05 for the first time, a backup of your saves from the previous version will be created automatically, just in case. When loading a save from an older version (prior to 1.05), several important things will happen:A script to restore missing quest items will run in the background. An autosave will be triggered, updating your current save to version 1.05 with the new save/load logic. All subsequent saves during that session will use the updated system. Missing Quest ItemsOn the first load in version 1.05, the s…
- Quick Development Update #3 - 13 December 2025
Hello, community, We're in the final stages of putting Patch 1.05 together. That patch, apart from fixing various bugs, will resolve the save loader issue that caused items to disappear from the game world. As our team is preparing to roll the patch out, we need to test the new save system in a closed environment to ensure the update's stability. This requires checking a wide variety of different save files. If you have some spare time and would like to assist our team with testing Patch 1.05 (and potentially help us speed up the release), we would greatly appreciate it! To sign up for participation, fill in this form: The Form Testing the patch will be done on our Discord server. We will manually pick participants and give them access to hidden channels with testing instructions. Reworking the save loader has taken quite a bit of time, but it is important not to rush it and break exist…
- Quick Development Update #2 - 2 December 2025
Hey everyone, Here's an update on Patch 1.05, which we’re actively preparing for release. The main thing slowing us down right now is the game's intricate save system. It has been producing inconsistent results - items disappearing, objects duplicating, and even NPCs appearing twice with broken logic. To solve this, we brought in experienced external developers to help us get everything into a stable, working state. The biggest challenge is making sure the new system also works correctly with existing saves - especially for those of you who’ve already played a lot. That means we need to carefully test and verify that everything now loads correctly, no matter where you are in the game. Once we’ve locked down saving and loading, future patches will arrive much faster. We're also working in parallel on two other areas: • Performance Optimization • This means better use of memory (both RAM…
- Quick Development Update - 27 November 2025
Hey everyone, We know that many of you are waiting for the next patch we recently announced. We need a little more time to stabilize it; our team plans to release it in the coming days. In the meantime, here’s a quick look at our near-future plans. Our current priorities fall into three categories: Bug fixes for quests and game mechanicsSome of these fixes will be included in the upcoming patch version 1.05. Game stabilityA patch focused on crash fixes is being prepared in parallel and is planned for release after patch 1.05. Gameplay improvements based on your feedback More about patch 1.05This update should finally resolve the issue with disappearing items (especially quest items) and introduce the promised address bar for console commands to restore them. Hopefully, this will be the end of this nasty bug—but let’s wait for the first results before drawing a line under it. Patch 1.05…
- Hotfix: Fixed Items Disappearing on Load, Sound and UI Fixes - v1.04 - 25 November 2025
GameplayFixed a critical bug where, after a specific sequence of saving and loading, items could disappear from the world.Fixed the logic for picking up quest items (loading could sometimes render some items non-interactable).Fixed an issue when some items did not appear in the inventory after being picked up.We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience. All items will be returned to their owners; to do that, we need to know which quest items you are missing. If you've been affected, let us know in this thread that also contains instructions. UI/UX• The sensitivity slider now works for controllers as well, but for now, only for gameplay. We will add controller support for UI in the next patch. • Fixed the tutorial widget that could fail to close or fail to show gamepad controls hints. • Added an additional check for item pickup. • Added automatic switching between the controller and key…

- Feedback&A: Answering your Of Ash and Steel Demo Reviews - 17 October 2025
Adventurers! With the demo having been out for a few days, we first and foremost wanted to thank all of you who took the time to play it and share your thoughts: we’ve read through all your comments, and your feedback is truly invaluable. We’d like to take this opportunity to address some of the most common comments and misconceptions.“The intro feels too slow, I want to fight sooner!”We completely understand where this feeling comes from, and in a way, that’s how it’s intended. The beginning of Of Ash and Steel is deliberately humble. Tristan begins his story as a cartographer, not a warrior, and is sent on what should have been a simple mission: help guide the crew through the waters of the archipelago, complete the mission, and return home. Not exactly an epic quest, and that's precisely the point. The slow, ordinary start gives meaning to what follows: when everything suddenly goes w…

Welcome back adventurers! In our first two devlogs, we explored how Tristan learns to stand up for himself by improving his combat skills, as well as crafting what he needs to stay alive on the island. But battles and blades are only a small part of the story. The true transformation from a cartographer to a hero also lies in how you develop Tristan's skills and attributes, in the choices you make, and ultimately, in how deep you will delve into the powerful, long-forgotten wisdom that the island hides.Today, we’re taking a closer look at the game’s Character Progression System and the mysterious force known as Ancient Knowledge. Let’s begin!Becoming the Hero You Want to BeCharacter progression in Of Ash and Steel is based on three skill trees: Survival, Crafting, and War.
