- Following Seas Hotfix 0.5.3 - 21 September 2026
Fixes:Fixed issue where distant geometry would be visible through trees on starting island.Significantly improved the accuracy of island sizes on the map - preventing ship positioning overlapping islands in map view.Improved accuracy of the quadrant.Significantly improved cases where reefing sails would result in jitter from over-shortened ropes, or large visible gaps between rope and reefpoints.Fixed issue where crew would begin randomly teleporting around the navmesh at ludicrous speed. You can no longer assign multiple crewmembers to the same interaction point. Instead the currently assigned crewmember will receive an update to the existing task.Added numerous adjustments to simplify ladders, and increase their utility. (For crew)Reduced chances of crew becoming stuck in tight spaces.Assigning multiple crew to very tight areas should no longer result in them becoming stuck. (They will…
- Following Seas Hotfix 0.5.2 - 15 September 2026
Small list of changes here - I'm not very good at animation or character stuff in general so getting the crew working is taking considerable time. Fixes: Fixed missing stone collision on Bathis Isle. Changes: Improved 'keel' effectiveness on Caelean junk to be somewhat less rolly and generally more stable. Epitaph movements are now somewhat cleaner, and better aligned with speed and pathfinding. Can now handle ladders, though animations remain rough. Epitaphs will make some effort to avoid one-another, and are less likely to become stuck, or push each other away from rest positions. Increased visual variety among Epitaphs. Epitaphs should switch between tasks more reliably.
- Following Seas Hotfix 0.5.1 - 7 September 2026
Fixes:Fixed issue that would prevent spawning of Saettia.Fixed load order issue that could cause numerous issues when attempting to sail a ship that had just been loaded in through the shipyard.Fixed invisible cleats on Bathis Isle.Fixed several geometry and shader issues on Bathis Isle.Fixed broken provision dialog in several ships.Hopeful resolution to displaced ship name text.Fixed issue where entering ship-reset mode while interacting with certain ship objects would prevent moving the ship - thus softlocking if the ship happened to be in a 'red' state when toggled.Changes:Updating heading while helm is in use by an Epitaph will now update the task for the same Epitaph instead of assigning to an idle crewmember.Known Issues:Sailing for long periods (typically > 1 hr, but may vary), may cause the wake shader to break, resulting in transparent waves, and foam stretching into the horizo…
- Following Seas 0.5 - Initial Crew System - 31 August 2026
Fixes:Fixed weird hovering second mainmast on lateen Xebec.Fixed, or at least substantially reduced, jitter when piloting rowboats.Improved longline troller's ability to maintain course.Fixed numerous issues that could cause errors during scene transition.Significantly improved stair colliders on Greatship, making traversal smoother.Fixed some minor issues with controller polling.ChangesAltered many UI elements and menus to better accommodate Ultra-ultrawide monitors. (32:9) Not all elements are complete, but focus given to primary UI elements. There's a lot of UI so this may cause some unintended scaling issues - working on it.Replaced fish dialogs to better accommodate varied screen sizes/aspect ratios.Changed support structure of the Xebec to make below decks navigation less annoying.Updated provision transfer dialog to allow management of new provisions, as well as a new page to han…
- Update on the crew system, and info regarding next major update. - 24 August 2026
Hello Steam Users!I know it's been a while since the last update. Doing my best to get an update together - hoping for next weekend. Main blocker is the crew system, as there's a lot of little parts to it that need to be functional for anything to work. That said, a first iteration of crew is very near release, along with a number of other minor changes. While I expect it will launch in a somewhat limited state - I'd like it to be functional, and useful. The following functions are largely complete, and will be the main crew capabilities at the launch of the crew system:Mast Control - Currently, you can set your desired sail setup (in terms of reef%), and the crew will work until this is complete. If a single crewmember is present, they will queue these actions and complete in sequence. Otherwise actions are supplied to crew until all are utilized, then queued for whichever crewmember is…
- Following Seas 0.4.8.1 (Fixed Ladders broken in last update) - 3 August 2026
Sorry about that.
- Following Seas 0.4.8 (Bug fixes and wake improvements.) - 2 August 2026
Thank you all for your patience. There's a number of fixes in this update that will hopefully improve the experience. Fixes: Fixed pass time controller text not immediately updating upon instantiation. Finished full migration to 'new' input system within unity. This should not be noticeable, but cleans up backend structure. Fixed weather audio continuing to play after weather state changes. Fixed several small issues with rope orientation on the caravel. Fixed odd teal tint to Caravel sail. Fixed a few issues that could prevent ship names from functioning as expected. Fixed several issues with ballast persistence. - Both the amount and distribution should now reliably save. Fixed (or at least improved) the cabin stairs on the Padewakang to make it much less likely for the player to become stuck. Fixed (again) several issues that would cause the mainsail on various Saettia variants to di…
- Following Seas Hotfix 0.4.7 (Fixes to Windows physics due to Linux improvements. - 23 July 2026
I swear, on the good days it's an ouroboros, on the bad days it's a Sisyphean circle. Most days I can't tell the difference. I'm hopeful that this update keeps the Linux performance improvements intact, while also resolving the very unstable ropes and joints introduced in the last update.
- Following Seas Hotfix 0.4.6 (Linux Performance Improvements) - 19 July 2026
Fixed loading screen prompts often being cut-off on some resolutions. The main target of this update is Linux performance. Given the wide variety of Linux setups, and my limited testing access, I can't guarantee these fixes will work for everyone -- would much appreciate feedback via email or discord. The last 1.X version of Following Seas averaged ~30 fps on my Steam deck, while the move to the 0.X setup along with the engine migration dropped things down to 2-3. Now, after 32 separate testing builds -- I average ~40fps on the steam deck. In terms of cause - it seems the physX changes introduced with Unity 6.X don't play well with Linux, especially when asynchronous scene's with physics objects are present. I've made a number of backend changes, and am optimistic that this will be a solid improvement for most systems, including PC, where I now reach 140fps on Waypoint.
- Notice regarding performance on Linux Devices - 17 July 2026
It's come to my attention that many users on Linux devices, including the Steam deck, are experiencing inconsistent, and often severely degraded performance since the update to Unity 6.3.I am actively working to resolve this as soon as possible. My apologies to those effected.Prospective purchasers -- if you are on Linux I would recommend delaying purchase until this message is replaced, or switch to the beta branch, as described below. For those who have purchased -- my hope is to have this resolved in short order, but you are of course more than welcome to utilize the refund system if available. Otherwise, please switch to the beta branch via Properties -> Game Versions & Betas -> betatestingThis will be the most recent build configured with Unity 2022.3. It will be lacking newer content, but should play much more stably on LInux devices.
- Following Seas Hotfix 0.4.5 - 16 July 2026
This small update fixes a number of issues, some old, some new. I'm continuing to work through reported issues and fix things as quickly as I can. Joys of having a day job, I don't have as much time as I'd like. I thank you for your patience. As a note particularly for those reading updates through Steam - as a number of people have reported, I am absent from the Steam forums. While there's several reasons and I'd prefer not to get into it overmuch -- a major reason is down to resources. I try to keep most of my time centered on actual development, and a big aid is having primarily a single source for reports and feedback, rather than multiple sources often reporting the same issues. The reason I use discord for this is down to it being a much superior platform for communication, particularly when images and files are often going back and forth. I do understand that some players prefer…
- Following Seas Hotfix 0.4.4 - 10 July 2026
One more for the day. This small update should resolve a number of major performance issues -- particularly on Linux devices. Mouse movement/camera control should be back to smooth operation. Stairs on the Dhow are now less sticky.
- Following Seas Hotfix 0.4.3 - 9 July 2026
I am working on a more substantial set of fixes - but want to clear out the progress blockers. This fix addresses issues some players are experiencing where the Player consistently loads into the starting beach instead of their ship. No issues with your saves, this should solve the issue.
- Following Seas Hotfix 0.4.2 (Important note on performance issues.) - 9 July 2026
Added a couple of small script efficiency updates. I'm getting reports that some users are seeing much worse performance with the update to DX12 being default instead of DX11. You can circumvent most of these issues by adding the following text to the Launch Options. Access this by opening the context menu in Steam -> Properties -> General Then enter the following in the Launch Options field: -force-d3d11 This will force the engine to fallback to DX11. I will be looking into adding the ability to do this through settings, but currently this will hopefully address the issues on affected systems.
- Following Seas Hotfix 0.4.1 - 8 July 2026
Very small hotfix while I address larger bugs. Fixed player losing directional momentum when jumping while aboard ships. Fixed inability to set shadows to 'low'.
- Following Seas 0.4 (New version scheme, new engine version.) - 7 July 2026
Major UpdateApologies for the long wait between updates -- especially with several significant bugs impacting the experience. I'm currently under a state-of-emergency due to flooding -- and we've been getting a lot of weather and power-outages.FixesRopes are now more resistant to over-shortening, and additional methods have been added such that ropes that are considered too-short are automatically adjusted.Fixed an issue that would prevent world recentering from occurring under specific circumstances, resulting in serious stability issues the further the player ranged from the origin point.Fixed many instances of ropes that existed in incorrect local space orientations -- resulting in behavior as if gravity was inverted.Fixed persistent mooring ropes failing to maintain tension on load.Fixed major lighting shifts when equipping the quadrant or spyglass.Fixed many issues with player cont…
- Following Seas 1.3 Hotfix 4.4 - 27 June 2026
Small hotfix to address substantial jitter encountered in some circumstances, particularly on the Saettia. Replaced strange Epitaph model on the Bell's with one more unique. Simplified static Saettia at the Bells to reduce draw calls.
- Following Seas 1.3 Hotfix 4.3 - 25 June 2026
One more small update before the summer sale starts off. Improved rendering of procedural UI elements in the map. Added faint grid to the map view. Cleaned up the file structure somewhat to reduce download size.
- Following Seas 1.3 Hotfix 4.2 - 24 June 2026
Very small update to address issues with player falling through decks suddenly when at large heel angles. Player angle relative to ships should also feel more natural, as heel angles have now been applied to the positional clone. Note that this may cause doors to become difficult to pass through at extreme heel angles.
- Following Seas 1.3 Hotfix 4.1 - 22 June 2026
Very small update -- but I consider the Waypoint bug game-breaking, so I wanted to resolve ASAP. The next larger update will be focused on bringing the demo up to the current state of the main game -- as Steam's Summer sale begins in a few days, and I'd prefer to have it represent the current state of the game. Added cancel button to main-menu option panel. Pressing escape in the main-menu will close the option panel if open. Fixed major bug that could cause irrecoverable performance hits when Waypoint Isle navmesh was instantiated or destroyed.
