  • Act 2 Playtest + Move Your Everything!! - 15 September 2026

Hello everyone, Duhop here! Since the last devlog, my remaining few weeks of July and almost all of August were dedicated to one, singular task; making Act 2 look amazing. I'm happy to say that a full round of visual polish is now finished, and that playtesting for Act 2 has officially begun! If you're interested in participating, head over to our Discord and check out #playtesting for instructions on how to join :D Now, for today's topic 😎 Move Your Everything!! If you're a long-time reader, you might remember another devlog about visual scripting from last October titled Move Your Sprites!. I thought I was cooking at the time, but some of what I've learned over the last month or so has pretty much completely eclipsed the methods I was using back then. You can go back and take a look a look at that previous devlog for the basics, but herein lies some of the biggest lessons I've learne…

  • The Boy Is Back in Town - 15 July 2026

Hi all, Duhop here! My July started off with a trip for a lovely family wedding, which of course just had to leave me sick for another whole week afterward -_- In sharp contrast to that, however, I'm just now starting to realize that June might genuinely be the best month we've ever had in development of Alex's Journey to the Grave. So here's what we got done: I wrote almost the entirety of Act 3. If you're curious, the previous devlog was actually about my experience re-editing Act 2, and finally finding peace with it. Coming into the start of June, I had just finished that, and I decided to delay the visual scripting work needed to polish it for release so I could continue writing while the iron was hot. At the time, Act 3 was a patchwork of a few disconnected scenes I'd sort of just plugged away at over the past couple years(!). There were huge gaps, and I needed to do a lot of writi…

  • Tragedy, The Writer's Anxiety - 2 June 2026

Unique and witty greeting from Duhop, person reading! Today, I want to talk about a fundamental question that I took far too long to ask myself, and even longer to find an answer for. What is the point of Alex's Journey to the Grave? If it's supposed to be a realistic depiction of clinical mental health issues, why do Alex and Alex have such clear and valid reasons for the anguish that they suffer? I think it would be easy to assume that the depression in the game is meant to be a depiction of the type that is clearly justified by tragedy or circumstance. Relating to it in that way is still completely valid and intended, but that's not actually the primary goal. Alex's Journey to The Grave is an exaggerated reflection of my own mental health struggles as a teen, and those mental health struggles were not clearly "justified" by anything. From the start, I've always intended to relate to…

  • No Editor? (No) Problem! - 6 April 2026

Hello all! Duhop here, back again with a devlog for March. This month, me and the team have been hard at work on artwork, visual scripting, asset planning, and editing for Alex's Journey to the Grave. Not all of the work has been for Act 2 specifically (we're quite ahead on background art, excitedly!), but we're still grinding hard to catch up and get it playtest-ready soon! (Game devs often say the last 20% of polish takes 80% of the effort, and right now I'm definitely feeling that 😅) Most recently for myself, I've been spending my time on a deep-dive editing pass for Act 2. I know player feedback could prompt further, possibly large-scale changes, but there were just too many points in the script I still had personal unresolved issues with. Anyway, there's a lot I have to say about the process, so let me get right into it. Editing Is Writing As a preface; I don't actually know exact…

  • Goblin Relations - 14 March 2026

Greetings all persons, the writings of Duhop are hither! February was a dreary, unpleasant month to live in my city, and mostly uneventful when it came to the development of Alex's Journey to the Grave as well. My own efforts consisted almost entirely of a grind to finish the editing and scripting needed to proceed with our upcoming rounds of playtesting, while a great deal of our art progress (and the posting of this devlog) was thrown into disarray by frustrating worldly circumstance after frustrating worldly circumstance. Despite the predictably nasty weather, however, one event this past month made me seriously reconsider my stance on the RNG I've endured to wind up living in Winnipeg. I've talked about the Winnipeg Game Collective and their yearly Winnipeg Game Jam in a previous devlog already, but to recap; WGC is a volunteer-run community group that aims to united both the casual…

  • Playtesting Returns! - 12 February 2026

Hello everyone, Duhop here! Pardon me for the late devlog this month, unfortunately I spent the entire first week of February sick in bed :( On the flipside, though, I do have some great progress and news to share with you all today! All through January, we've been focusing our efforts specifically on polishing up Act 2 of AJG so we can get it ready for another round of public playtesting, and at this point, we can comfortably say it will be ready to go by the end of February :D If you're interested in getting early access to Act 2 and helping us out with your feedback, you can join our discord server if you haven't already for updates and information on how to participate. Active playtesters will receive a free copy of the game upon release, and will also have their names listed in the credits! Now, for the actual devlog portion of this devlog, I'm gonna go back in time to our original…

  • Find *Your!* Community - 9 December 2025

Hello everyone, Duhop here! This month, I'm pivoting the devlog away from the specific, technical topics I've been discussing recently. I want to talk about something that's helped me tremendously as a game dev, but also has the potential to help pretty much anyone doing anything. From a game dev perspective, you might've guessed from the title that this is an article about marketing—but you'd be dead wrong. There's a reason I emphasized it as your community, not your studio's or your game's.Human beings are collaborative, social creatures. No matter how independent, introverted, or stubborn one may be, their quality and enjoyment of work or a hobby can almost always benefit from the input of another. Plus, without any interaction at all, they're quite liable to lose their motivational steam entirelyThe caveat is, though, that their interests, experiences, or motivations need to align to…

  • Move Your Sprites! - 7 November 2025

Duhop here, back again with another devlog for October! I've recently been working on putting some of our new sprite assets to use, so this month I want to talk about a surprisingly simple part of the process that really brings the characters to life. Also because seeing the before and after of this step really makes me happy :D A lot of this might seem obvious to an experienced developer, but I think the most useful way for me to write devlogs on topics like this is probably just to explain everything I wish I knew when I first went into it myself. So! Here's a quick look at a short, unfinished scene that I recently did the character expressions for:What sticks out to you at first glance? If you're anything like me, probably the fact that Jenna's sprite doesn't move an inch throughout the entire scene. Obviously it looks a whole lot better in real time, but that utter lack of movement…

  • Fall in Love with Community - 10 October 2025

Hello again everyone, Duhop here. After spending the last week or so sick in bed, I'm finally back at it and ready to share our progress for September :D While we have been making progress on the development side, there isn't really much new and exciting to talk about. We've been biting down on the meat of what we need to get done, which basically just means a whole lot of writing for me, and plenty more of the exact same sprite and CG work I talked about over the past two months for the artists. Much more interestingly, we had an amazing boost to visibility this month thanks to the wonderful Fall in Love community VN fest run by Studio Élan! In contrast to the overcrowded official Steam festivals we've taken part in, the hand-picked, romance-focused Fall in Love fest blessed us with a huge influx of visibility and wishlists. If that's how you found us, welcome!! Studio Élan also very k…

  • Slow and Steady - 12 September 2025

Hello everyone, Duhop here. This month, I have an update on the release timeline for Alex's Journey to the Grave in addition to the usual development anecdote. The the new timeline, though, is essentially just this; it'll be finished when it's finished, and it'll be finished in 2026. It's true that following the passing of our team member, motivation to finish the game has never been higher. However, that same intense emotion doesn't only affect motivation—it's also a constant reminder that we have to make incredibly sure to do things right. For me personally, as the game's sole writer and director, that means an itching need to take things slow, and overthink everything. And the worst part is, it's not even irrational. Because how could anyone let themselves half-ass something dedicated to their friend in the afterlife? As it seems to be with most creators, I've never truly been 100% c…

  • Lighting a Cat - 2 August 2025

Hello everyone, Duhop here.I thought I would talk about something a bit more technical this time, because I'm really proud of a scene we finished this month. Our background artist JustEmmi, our character artist Paintedtrash, and myself all worked together to let it come to life in-game, and some clever use of Ren'Py's layered images, masking, and blending modes let us do it without absolutely exploding the filesize. This devlog will be much more in-depth and technical than any I've done in the past, so hopefully it's still interesting. And perhaps it can help out some fellow devs! Now, here's the scene in question: Would you believe me if I told you the cat in this scene was actually a sprite with multiple expressions and poses, and not just part of the background image? Maybe you would at first glance, but take a closer look. Notice how the godrays continue to shine over her. Notice ho…

  • Feline Wisdom Strikes - 1 July 2025

Hello everyone! Duhop here, glad to be back with another monthly devlog :DThis month, I want to talk about something that I have always thought is special, unique, and important about Alex's Journey to the Grave; censorship, or the purposeful lack thereof. From the very beginning, I have set out to create a dark, emotional, and visceral experience. I've deliberately shown and exemplified the darkest of the main characters' darkest moments, in unusually graphic detail. I want it to feel like the story is reality—that the pain and discomfort is inescapable—in the very same way it feels for the characters. I don't want it to feel like there is some mysterious author, or social/corporate politics, or any other third party curating/watering down their reality. I don't want the darkest, most critically intense moments to be simply alluded to, then copped out of with a timely fade to black. I…

  • A New Era in AJG's Development - 12 May 2025

Hi everyone. Duhop here, lead developer for Alex's Journey to the Grave. I have to apologize for our recent lack of updates and communication. I’m sorry to say that was because development of the game has essentially been on hold for the past couple of months, following the news that one of our team members had passed away. I won’t get into the specifics of that right now—plans are in the works for us to preserve their memory as best we can, and I want to make sure we can take our time to do that properly. The real purpose of this devlog is to break the silence, and usher in a new era in the development of Alex’s Journey to the Grave. I’m doubtful that it’s still possible for our small team to finish the game by Q4 of 2025 now, as we had originally projected, but we’re still gonna try our damn hardest. After recovering from the initial heartbreak, I personally don’t think I’ve ever been…

  • AJG Demo Update 2.1! - 4 March 2025

Hello everyone! In preparation for the Steam Visual Novel Fest, we've pushed an update to the demo to make sure it's extra polished up and ready to be scrutinized. Special thanks goes to all the streamers who played the demo in the past few days after our Keymailer campaign! Tuning into their streams is what ended up helping us find some of the last few hidden little typos and bugs that we're fixing in this patch. You can find and watch their VODs here, so go check out their reactions to the demo and give them some love! Now for the informational part: AJG Demo 2.1 Changelog Programming: - Updated to a newer version of Ren'Py. - Fixed several incompatability issues that came up. • Demo Release this Monday! - 2 November 2024

Alex's Journey to the Grave is finally going to hit the public eye this Monday, November 4th, in the form of a free demo covering Act 1 of the 6 that will be in the final game! Here's the store page for the demo! Act 1 is 15,000 words or around 1.5 hours long for the average reader. It tells the story of how our two main characters met and had their fates intertwined. A dark room, an online chat, a new perspective, a bright smile, a warm embrace... and a growing, inescapable fear. I'm extremely proud of how polished the demo has turned out, and I believe it will definitely catch the attention of anyone within the target audience. If you have any interest in Alex's Journey to the Grave at all, please give it a play through! I've opened up some threads for feedback here on the Steam forums, or more directly you can join our Discord community and discuss the game there: https://discord.gg/…
