Each morning, before going on air, you’ll sit down with the show’s producer to choose which stories to cover—and what stance to take. Time is short. You won’t be able to read through everything. You’ll have to make calls that grab the audience’s attention, please the sponsors, and prove that your voice deserves to be heard. Otherwise, someone else will be sitting in your chair. In this country, reports on war and disaster sit side-by-side with ramen shop reviews. You might think it’s absurd. But when public airwaves are funded by sponsors, holding the audience’s attention becomes a matter of survival. As a commentator, you’re not just delivering the facts. You’re someone viewers want to hear from. A lawyer weighing in on celebrity scandals. An essayist debating foreign policy.
