- Animals and other features - Progress update - 19 November 2024
Hello everyone! Once again, it's been a while since I checked in with you all. I'm very aware that around now is when I had hoped to have this update finished, but I've been working an actual job, which has relegated Into the Wild's development to something I can only do in my free time. Nonetheless, I have been working away when I can find the time, and whilst sadly I'm not delivering this update to you all today, I can at least talk more about what will be in it and when you can expect it. So! Animals, the most exciting feature coming to this update and the thing I'm personally most excited about having in the game. Well, the good news is, they're basically done! Coming in this update are 2 animals which will inhabit the valley of Jegersdal, and you've probably already spotted one of them from this update's thumbnail: wolves. Wolves will be a new threat that players have to deal with,…
- The future of Into the Wild - 26 September 2024
Hey everyone! So, it's been a while since I checked in with you all! Honestly, burn out hit me like a truck after Into the Wild released, it was a VERY tiring year working on getting this game out to you all, so I needed to step away for a bit. That being said, seeing everyone playing Into the Wild over the last nearly 2 months has been a dream come true for me and I absolutely plan to continue working on Into the Wild. As I mentioned in a previous announcement a while back, because of me using Into the Wild as my masters project, I wasn't able to patch the game while my submission was still being graded. Well, that grading period is over and I can start to look at getting new content pushed out to you all! I've been looking at the feedback that Into the Wild has received, both good and bad, and thinking about where to go from here. I'm really glad that so many people played Into the Wi…
- Version 1.0.4 - 19 August 2024
Hello all! Been a little bit since the last update, but got some new bug fixes! The new fixes are: Fixed a bug where hunger, health and cold could still deplete while intro screen was showing Fixed a bug that caused music to overlap in certain situations Fixed a problem where standing on top of certain objects would cause the player to instantly die. Unfortunately a fix for this happening at all requires a fall damage overhaul, but as a stop gap measure I have prevented it from happening in the most prevalent locations Fixed a bug with the music system that caused certain tracks to play in very unfitting situations Fixed a bug that was causing stamina to not regenerate at the correct speed Fixed a bug in one of the caves that was frequently causing players to fall through the map The next thing on my list is to overhaul the fall damage system, although I'll keep up with minor patches li…
- Version 1.0.3 - 10 August 2024
Hey all! Another fairly small update today, but as usual I wanted to put out a new version and the patch notes that come with it so people are aware, mainly so that if it glitches the hell out you guys can better tell me what's going wrong! So, all in all Into the Wild's release has gone pretty well, there's been a fair few of you playing the game and I was pleasantly shocked to even see someone streaming it on twitch! Throughout this reasonable amount of attention one thing I've seen is a lot of confusion surrounding the "aim", "goals", or to put it slightly more negatively "point" of Into the Wild. To try and clear up some of this confusion, I've added a start screen that shows up when you first start a new game that gives a bit more context to the setting and explains what you're trying to do. This screen will only appear when starting a new save and will not occur when loading an ex…
- Version 1.0.2 - 9 August 2024
Hello all! This is quite a boring patch, nothing really exciting happening apart from fixing some notable bugs. The changes are: Fixed a bug that caused players to be able to eat the same food item multiple times Improved snow collisions to make it come into buildings and caves less Adjusted the algorithm that plays voice lines so that the game doesn't always decide to play hunger related lines even when a player is freezing or close to death Fixed a bug that caused the game to only play hunger lines for the first level of hunger rather than progress through the different voice lines as a player gets more hungry Fixed a bug that caused health to not deplete properly under some circumstances Fixed a bug that prevented background audio from being made quieter when certain voice lines played Fixed a bug that caused music to play quieter than it should Fixed a bug that allowed players to mo…
- Version 1.0.1 - 6 August 2024
Hey all! Really short one from me, but some changes that I felt people could use a heads up for! First small change is to the text when you first play the game to clarify that despite it being a student project, I do in fact plan to continue work on Into the Wild :D Second slightly more major change is to optimization. Some users on low end machines pointed out to me that there are some pretty significant performance issues, which whilst not present on higher end machines, were significant enough to get me to take a look at them on day 1. It turns out that the root of the problem was due to the quantity of different audio sources in some areas of the game, so this has been addressed and I have found a solution that should help without compromising audio quality! Therefore, if you're on a low end machine you should see significantly increased performance whereas if you're on a high end m…
- Version 1.0.0 - 5 August 2024
Hey everyone! First things first, to everyone who's downloading and checking out Into the Wild for the first time now that it's public, thanks for giving it a try! It's probably gonna be slightly buggy, but that's 0 budget indie games developed in less than 2 years by a single person I guess. I'm working on getting those bugs fixed as quick as I can, but you can let me know of any problems using this link: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSckOZyxHOXJh6bXgQGyXLPijt0ODI2HtqZfGqpJCGosXaj57w/viewform?usp=sf_link. I hope you guys enjoy! It's so crazy that this day is finally here! This update mostly just brings bug fixes when compared to version 0.5.0, but I think it's not seeing "alpha" or "beta" next to the version number that makes the biggest difference to me. To everyone who tested Into the Wild prior to release and helped it grow into what it is now, I owe you guys a very big T…
- Version 0.5.0 - 21 July 2024
Hey again everyone! So! Into the Wild is nearly ready to go! Version 0.5.0 marks the final major update prior to the public release of Into the Wild! What this means in practical terms is that this is the final major content update to the game before release day. This update contains the final new features for the game, and past this point no new features will be added in until after release. The only thing left now is ever present need for final play testing and bug fixing, and I'll be focusing my time on fixing those existing bugs and refining already added content before version 1.0.0 hits the store in a couple of weeks! And it will only be a few weeks to go now, as I'm VERY excited to announce that Into the Wild be available to the general public as the clock strikes midnight and we go into the 6th of August (or at least, as the clock strikes midnight here in central Europe, as the…
- Version 0.4.1 - 8 July 2024
Hey everyone! A few of you may have noticed, but some achievements went live on steam a few days ago, and this update brings the game up to date with this so that all new achievements can be earned! There are currently 12 achievements in the game, with more that'll be added later down the line, so go have fun trying to get them all! Unfortunately, some of these achievements will not be unlocked through progress on games that you started before this update released. The achievements for surviving certain amounts of time will not unlock on past games, as in order to get these working properly I had to overhaul the code for logging time survived and also change the format it saves this data in. These changes will most likely also wipe the time survived log for games begun before this update, but I haven't put a lot of testing into that so I don't really know how past saves will react to th…
- Version 0.4.0 - 28 June 2024
Hello again everyone! So, dialogue is here! You can finally hear your character being cold, starving, exhausted and generally complaining about the horrible afflictions that come with surviving an arctic environment. The way I decided to implement voice lines is a little experimental as I have implemented a system whereby the game won't play voice lines while music is playing. This is purely because I couldn't implement them in such a way where music didn't drown out voice lines and make them hard to understand without making the music so quiet it lost it's impact. As always, let me know what you think of this system and if it doesn't work out then I will look at overhauling it in the future! And as an cool little extra detail, this addition takes Into the Wild out of alpha and into beta, since dialogue was the last unimplemented major feature! No more major features until after release…
- Version 0.3.4 - Hotfix 1 - 17 June 2024
Hello again everyone! I don't usually tend to make announcements for these kind of small updates where it's mostly fixing bugs and not much new content, but todays fix comes with some fairly significant changes I wanted to let you all know about! So, the weather system. It's been a frustrating part of the game for a while now, as it has been widely considered too harsh and not changeable enough. Well, no longer! Along with a variety of bug fixes, this update brings out a rather substantial overhaul to how the game decides which weather it is going to change to as well as how frequently the weather changes. The new weather system has 3 key changes. The first of these is that there will now be a longer amount of time between weather changes. According to my maths, the weather should (on average) take around 1.5 times as long to change as it did previously. Of course, it's still subject to…
- Version 0.3.4 - 14 June 2024
Hello again everyone! I hope you've all been appreciating the new content and more regular bug fixes lately! This update doesn't bring about anything too major, however it does add in the last of the diegetic sounds that are supposed to be in the game! We're getting towards a relatively finished build of the game now, as all there is left to do on the audio front is for me to implement all the dialogue and to write a few more musical pieces. Expect version 0.4.0 to drop in around 2 weeks time, which will have all the dialogue and any remaining diegetic sounds that I may have forgotten for this update, as well as a much improved audio mix once all the sounds are added in and I can balance the volume more easily, leaving just additional music to be composed and implemented before the final release. In addition to the new audio, I've also addressed some long running frustrations with the g…
- Version 0.3.3 - 4 June 2024
Hello testers new and old! Big day for Into the Wild today! For those of you who didn't notice, Into the Wild was publicly revealed! This has brought new testers into the project, so for those of you who joined recently, welcome! Any new people can skip over these patch notes, as version 0.3.3 will be your first experience of the game For those who have been testing for a while, this update should fix one of the longest running and most frustrating problems of Into the Wild. Version 0.3.3 introduces random spawn locations! This means that no longer will you have to walk through the ice canyon for 5-10 minutes to go and do something interesting (at least most of the time, it is still a potential spawn location). The reason why it is still a potential spawn location is because it does offer access to the most powerful item in the game at a very early point in a playthrough, and I hope tha…
