You can learn a lot about someone from their favorite Final Fantasy games, and there are certainly those that get the bulk of the attention from the wider audience. But then there are those that don't always get the immediate shout-outs, but deserve your attention because, if they do click for you, they'll hit harder than anything else. I'm here to give you that little push today, because four Final Fantasy games that fall into that category have just arrived on GOG, meaning no DRM and a guarantee for the future, and you can grab them at less than half price if you're quick about it. When Square Enix announced the Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster collection for Final Fantasies 1 through 6 back in 2021 , I was overjoyed. For too long had PC folks had to 'make do' with the quite nasty mobile ports of these games, and the Pixel Remasters looked set to finally rectify that with proper versions replete with their original artwork. But one thing was missing. Well, several things were missing it turns out, but chief among them were, of course, its damn fonts - a point of contention that's plagued many a Square Enix PC port in recent years, and one that fans quickly set about trying to fix with mods . Extra salt was then added to the wound when Square Enix said that last year's Switch and PS4 versions of the Pixel Remaster series would have two different font options straight out of the box - and it's only now that the PC versions have finally caught up. It looks like the Final Fantasy Pixel Remasters are finally coming to consoles, after being exclusive to Steam for a year. You would think that some simple remasters of the first six Final Fantasy games would be a shoo-in for at the very least a Nintendo Switch release. That would be a good business decision from Square Enix , but this is also the company that is insisting on pushing forward with blockchain nonsense , so who's to say what the right call is. Fortunately for us though, it seems to have acquired some sense after all, as it looks like PS4 and Switch versions of the remasters are on the way. Final Fantasy IV 's pixel remaster is now available on Steam. It follows the release of the pixel remasters of I-III in July, with V and VI both due in the near future. It's also arguably the first Final Fantasy to resemble what the series would become, in terms of characters and its battle system. Read more

In July, Square Enix tossed out those old mobile port versions of the classic Final Fantasy games that us PC folks have been playing and have started replacing them with fancier remasters. Fantasies Final I-III arrived in their Pixel Remaster versions at the end of July. The next party of adventurers is queued to head out next month, also with those modern niceties like new character pixel art, new menu designs, and an auto-battle function. You'll be able to snag the adventurs of Kain and Cecil and company on September 8th when Final Fantasy IV 's remastered version arrives. Read more

You'll soon be able to add Final Fantasy 4 to your collection of pixel remasters if you fancy it. Square Enix has revealed that the classic RPG game's pixel makeover is hitting Steam on September 8, just two weeks away. Final Fantasy 4's pixel remaster comes with updated 2D pixel graphics that have been redrawn with modern hardware in mind - they've even been created by the original artist, Kazuko Shibuya. We've also got rearranged soundtracks, improved gameplay with updated controller controls, and modernized UI. That's not it, either, as there are heaps of quality-of-life improvements, including additional extras like the bestiary illustration gallery, music player, and the ability to save at any time, which is particularly handy. Final Fantasy IV turns 30 today and to celebrate, Square Enix sat game designer Takashi Tokita down to talk about memories from development. It was the first Final Fantasy game he was involved with from the very beginning, he explains, so he's able to share some neat details on how the game's design evolved. - The ugliest versions of Final Fantasy are being pulled off Steam this month - 1 July 2021
To make way for the upcoming Final Fantasy 1-6 Pixel Remasters , the current versions of Final Fantasy 5 and Final Fantasy 6 will be pulled off Steam later this month. Since these are the ugly mobile ports, I think it's safe to say they won't be missed, though. Both Steam pages for Final Fantasy 5 and 6 have been updated with disclaimers that they'll "no longer be available for purchase after July 27th 2021". After spending several years making vintage Final Fantasy games look worse with remastered re-releases toting blurry graphics and ugly menus, Square Enix might give people what they actually wanted in the first place. During their E3 showcase today, Squeenix announced a "Pixel Remaster" series of Final Fantasies I through VI.
