With the Minecraft movie bringing Mojang's iconic sandbox even more to the forefront of our minds, there's always the lingering question about a possible Minecraft 2. While that seems unlikely in an official capacity, several teams have looked to put their own spin on the blocky building game. Among them is Reforj , built by Dundee-based 4J Studios, a team that previously worked on Minecraft itself (specifically porting it to consoles and handhelds). April 30, 2025: The Reforj playtest is now live. Will we ever get Minecraft 2? While the Minecraft movie is exploding at the box office, the idea of a full, official sequel from Microsoft and Mojang seems unlikely. But Dundee-based developer 4J Studios, best known for porting the sandbox game smash hit to consoles and handhelds, is delivering a game that might well be considered a successor. Reforj is 4J's own original take on the format, built in collaboration with Minecraft YouTuber Joseph 'Stampy' Garrett, and starting from today you can sign up to get involved with its brand new playtest. March started with unveiling Reforj's first mob, the Tunneler Scout. This hostile creature hunts players, stealing their Aura as they deal damage. Players must protect this resource at all costs, as it is required in many crafting recipes such as the Aura Torch. The Tunneler Scout has a thick exoskeleton that protects it from direct attacks, so you must think carefully about how to defeat it. Internal testing is also underway, and the team is busy reviewing a wide range of features every week in the studios. Here are a couple of screenshots of our favourite moments and landscapes. Not stopping there, we implemented easy-to-learn building tools, intuitive crafting, and advanced creator tools. Minecraft has been around for more than a decade now. Though it continues to offer one of the best sandbox building experiences out there thanks to ongoing developer support, players who've spent a lot of time with it might be interested in trying out a new spin on its formula at this point. There are already solid options out there, like Terraria or Dragon Quest Builders 2, but none as closely resemble a true successor to Mojang's hit as Reforj , the new game from a studio that formerly worked on Minecraft's console editions.
