  • September 2026 Dev Progress Report - 14 September 2026

Anyone who has seen Jason and the Argonauts, the Ray Harryhausen classic from 1963 might see a familiar scene here. The old blind man furiously defends himself from the daily curse of three fetid screeching Harpies. Save him if you want to get off this Island, but the price will not be simple at all. Greetings and salutations, friends, from sunny Adelaide, where the Spring almond blossoms are out, and the Pale Ale is quite well made and delicious. Hi there to anyone coming in from Party-Based RPG Event on Steam - Scourge is indeed both of these things. In fact the whole crux of the game design is to get back to that Party-based adventure feel from the CRPGs of old, the ones that were influenced heavily by table-top RPG games of the 80s, and hit their PC peak in the late 90s. I don't think I need to list out the best ones! Over the last month, a great deal of testing has occurred with th…

  • August 2026 Dev Progress Report - 9 August 2026

Casting a battle spell, the super useful buff spell "Enhance Reflexes". It gives +3 to Pace - thats how many hexes you can move in a turn - which by itself would be worth the 6 mana points. But ALSO giving +3 to Dodge? Verging on O/P! But a strong defensive line relies on magic like this and makes the team-turn based method of initiative really shine - everyone on your side gets to act before the enemy does.Oh hello dere! Let me know if I am re-using the same witty intros ok? Wassup! Leets gooo!! :)First up is that testing is really happening now, with nearly ten people running through Act 1, and myself running through Act 2. After that, Microprose will test it all again with their QA team. I won't bore you with the bug lists, but the intention is to smash all those bugs and polish the mess of bug shells away. In order to get the experience nice and solid, I've had to shift the release…

  • Placeholder Art Begone - 2 July 2026

Face Portraits have been updated, and panel art is gone (the text box on the right side no longer has an image with it).I spent this week getting rid of the old placeholder art for portraits and event panels to finally bring Scourge of the Reptiles to a state where there is no Generated content left in the game. All Code, Design, Art, Music/Sound, and Text in this game is now human made. Using a cool and fun to use pixel art portrait maker from Itch.io, I was able to get the new portrait art style to fairly well match the style of the human-made pixel art in the tile-sets and sprites. The art also keeps the 90's retro look intact without heading too much into JRPG style or cartoon style. It uses similar restricted colour palettes and resolution to achieve that consistency. I went up a level in Aseprite (pixel art tool). With the scene images, I decided to just remove them entirely! This…

  • June 2026 Dev Progress Report - 22 June 2026

Arriving at the Palace of Pallasia. Let's meet the Queen - perhaps she will give refuge after we ended her forced tribute to the Island Labyrinth.G'day there mates! Ky (Kyoti Games) here with a monthly update for Scourge of the Reptiles as it nears its completion after just ~7000 hours of hard work. I was enjoying a Retro Gamer magazine the other day and reading an interview from an 80s game dev about the type of "crunch" dev time they had back then. Instead of a normal working week, they just worked 80-100 hours a week until the game was done and then took a short break to rest up! Can't help thinking that Scourge could have been finished a year or two earlier under this brain-destroying strategy. But then again, they made charting games in just 6 months, so that might have been the best way to create something in good time? Perhaps the deadline of the platform becoming suddenly obsole…

  • May 2026 Dev Progress Report - 15 May 2026

Seeking answers on how to protect your tribe from the Witch - in a tomb of a long lost holy people. Hi everyone, this is Ky here, your devoted ozzie Dev smashing together an amazing dinosaur game in just a few years! First up, Scourge is right now in the ANZ Indie Fest event. https://store.steampowered.com/sale/anzindiefest26Fraser from Microprose and myself recorded a hilarious talk-show play-through for the event and you can watch it stream on the Scourge page or linked into the ANZ Indie Fest event. It's worth watching just to see my mad skills at my own game :) Slaughtered the tutorial fight "Raptors" in 5 rounds flat. I look forward to recording with Fraser again, he is top fun.The main news of the month since the Microprose publisher announcement - which came with a brand new trailer and page refresh - is that I just finished my second run through the first half of the campaign. T…

  • April 2026 Dev Progress Report - 2 April 2026

I'm gonna cut to the chase right here with some important and very exciting BREAKING NEWS.Scourge of the Reptiles is now with the Publisher, Microprose! Let's take a trip down memory lane for a second. Imagine a young gamer (that's me, the dev, but little) on his Commodore 64 and later Amiga, sailing the pixel art seas in Sid Meier's Pirates! (1987), crashing his weapon-laden chopper in Gunship (1986), and leaping huge gaps in Stunt Car Racer (1989). All of these amazing titles came out of the talented and very well known American Microprose label, and developed internally. Many of you would remember that this was just preamble compared to the epic release that was Civilization (1991), which could be one of the greatest turn-based games of our time. But there was a Microprose/Mythos game that is at the very core of Scourge of the Reptiles, and that is the almighty tactical unit grandfath…

  • March 2026 Dev Progress Report - 17 March 2026

Well hello there! I'll be acting as your Tour Guide today in the beautiful but always supremely deadly world of Scourge of the Reptiles. Early in the demo, you can do some side quests, including this one where you can get "leverage" for the local shop owner Juba. To get one tasty rumour from the Lookout Zenebe, you can bring him a nice Fur Jacket. Or with the Intimidation skill, threaten him instead (the popular dialogue option!)Over the last month, local players have been testing the Demo and giving me loads of feedback that I am furiously implementing as fast as it comes in. At the same time, Act 1 levels (1-10) are being re-tested, and polished to a playable standard. It won't be long I think before 50% of the game is fully playable - thats about 15-20 hours worth. Some feedback led to some deep changes to help new players encompass all the systems and UI, which I was told needed a l…

  • February 2026 Dev Progress Report - 14 February 2026

Hi-diddly-ho, neighborinos! This here is your neighbourly dev-next-door who will not only lend you a lawnmower for life but also make a cool game for you :)The first fight in the demo, versus a pack of sneaky Swifthooks that somehow got up onto your village plateau. Eliminate them with surprise - climb up on that rock for a height advantage - cast area spells on them - but most important of all, protect your flanks! Scourge presented an alpha version of the upcoming demo at South Australian Game Expo last weekend, and it went very well. A short list of fixes and suggestions came from the fifty or so testers that sat down for a play, all of which were updated into the game in just two days! A couple of cool feature suggestions from that crowd - a Fast Forward mode for combat; a "character class" label for units so you can easily find your fighter or mage when cycling units in combat; mou…

  • January 2026 Dev Progress Report - 15 January 2026

It's 2026! As the youtubers say - Let's gooooo! I'm the overworked and underpaid solo dev of Scourge of the Reptiles, here with your monthly update. Lots of great updates this month. Firstly, the demo is BUILT. You will be able to get your hands on it in the coming months. Its currently undergoing heavy external testing - thanks to my local buddies! - after which it will be subjected to even more testing. You would be amazed at just how many bugs and quirks are found by a single different set of eyes! Everyone plays games in their own way.In the demo, you do a 5 step selection to create your first main character - and then you are straight into the game play in your home village. A summary of the demo's contents: you can do two combats, a quest line related to gearing up for the main quest, you can trap a pig in a special event, and you can optionally train up your party and do some sho…

  • December 2025 Dev Progress Report - 17 December 2025

G'day guys, this is your monthly update from Kyoti, gnome tinkerer and Ozzie developer of Scourge of the Reptiles.Testing the Desert scene. Here, on the run from your capturers, you find an oasis where you can find critical water, food - palm dates and fish, both needing skill to gather, and perhaps have a little bath. Progress has been excellent this month, since completing the final level build last month. I had a list of feature upgrades that was growing while building levels 10-20 - not just code I wrote and then neglected to actually test or even confirm working - but also ideas that needed a bit of design before even doing that much. We are not talking about major features here - little things like "need more mid-range magic weapons and armour in act 2", "monsters that are immune to Mind spells", "zones where magic doesn't even work", "forgot to have scroll 1-use items to go with…

  • November 2025 Dev Progress Report - 19 November 2025

What's up guys, this is your monthly update from Kyoti, marching ant developer of Scourge of the Reptiles.In-development capture of a scene in level 16, shortly after you are shipwrecked on an island. Will you help the young Styracosaurus (SpikeFan) or leave it to be eaten by the T-Rex (WorldEater).I'm super thrilled to say that Level 20 was just completed mere minutes ago, and thats a wrap on level designs! I started Act 2 in July so its less than 5 months to build the last 10 of 20 levels - not bad. It felt great to knock off the last trap, the last tile-set draw, the last creature render, the last dialogue, and the last combat setup. I think the climactic scenes of Act 3 are suitably epic and will look and feel really cool. The magic items in the last act are mega-powerful! So the next goal is to make the game polished enough that a good portion of players will want to see the ending…

  • October 2025 Dev Progress Report - 15 October 2025

Hi peeps, this is your monthly update from Kyoti, busy beaver developer of Scourge of the Reptiles.Late game dino - the Carnotaurus (BloodCrest as its known to the locals). Not quite as big or thick as a T-rex but err..it hunts in packs! The above images also show some of my 3D model to 2D art process. I purchase the 3d models from the store - select the anims I like - and then capture each anim (retro 12 fps) in 8 facing directions into sprite sheets. Then build up the new animations and animators in 2d by hand. Post-capture, I usually crush the colour count down to 32 colours and make a sprite atlas to help RAM usage. But the whole job takes 1-2 hours per creature, and looks pretty awesome once dynamic shadows are added! So let me think, what has happened since September? Level 16 and 17 are completed, with level 18 under way. Level 19 will be a quicker one and the finale will just be…

  • Chats with Brodie/Tech Over Tea on Youtube - 22 September 2025

As mentioned in my last monthly update - I had a HUGE 2.5h chat with Brodie Robertson for the Tech Over Tea Podcast and Youtube video. We discussed game design for Scourge, trends in retro game dev, and art design tricks among many other topics. If you want to look under the hood of Scourge, and see my man-cave work studio in the background!, this is totally worth a watch (or listen on podcast)...

  • September 2025 Dev Progress Report - 15 September 2025

Hi folks, this is your monthly update from Kyoti, friendly developer of Scourge of the Reptiles. This is new Choose Your Weapon advert. Scourge appeared in ANZ Indie Showcase this month with many other excellent Ozzie games. It's been another busy month of content building! Act 2 is finally built - I even went and did the testing for new functions that were coded to support events in levels 11-15. Bugs found, bugs fixed. Enough QA at least to know that these levels will fire up and not crash, if not play through 100% - that proper testing is waiting for later, while I build up Act 3. Then I did the prep for Act 3. All twelve mounts are finished! Including a secret mount that is just so cool, I hope people find it and have a blast with that one. I don't think its too spoiler-ey to say that Act 3 mounts include Triceratops, Mammoth, Barghest, Styracosaur. You might think the largest mount…

  • August Dev Report - 15 August 2025

Hello again! Its August now! What the? This is your monthly progress development report from Kyoti Games, for Scourge of the Reptiles.Let me see, what can I tell you about this month. Well I can tell you that level 3 and 4 of Act 2 are built, and the last level of Act 2 is well under way. I had hoped to finish Act 2 by this report date but then I went and made loads of cool features (again, ha!). I definitely under-estimated how long Level 3 would take - but I won't tell you why because thats a spoiler! Level 4 was on schedule so I think there is a touch over 2 months of level building left. As much as I enjoy most of level building, there are some parts I find a little dull, like writing branching dialogues to cover all the personalty types players want to express, and how they want to solve problems (multiple skill or spell options). The writing is fun, its just that there is so darn…

  • July Dev Report - 15 July 2025

So what's the latest from your friendly local game dev at Kyoti games? This is the monthly progress report that will show you that Scourge of the Reptiles is building at a good pace. A week ago, the game had a booth for two days at Adelaide's Anime and Video Game Convention (Avcon) and here is a snap of the new Snow (Level 7) demo that was run for players. There was in fact a first demo featuring a fight with skeletons attacking from high rocks, and this was the second day demo where the fight was with NightFeathers (Troodons). These large birds can spit Frost balls that inflict Cold Exposure, a condition that drains Stamina until you warm up at a campsite fire. With the new Dire Wolf mount along with the original HornBeak (Gallimimus) mount, its not a super hard fight even when you are surprised and start the combat stunned and facing the other way. The tactical trick is to use the tre…

  • Development Update - 14 June 2025

Well here it is. a little monthly newsletter from your friendly local dev. Firstly, thank you to all who have wish-listed the game, and followed the community page, Follower growth has been really amazing, especially in the last month. It's so encouraging to see people interested in an RPG set in a prehistoric age - I was a little unsure the idea was going to "hit", but it really has.Scourge featured in both Turn Based Thursday Fest and Best Indie Games Summer Showcase this month, and the exposure was outstanding. TBTF was on the Steam Front Page for 4 days - I had a hunch it would kick off, but it just exploded. All 400 games in that Fest experienced insane wish-listing, Scourge included. If you haven't seen it yet, there is a new trailer on the front of the Steam page! Its short and epic. The music is wicked. But this is actually a Dev report, as I am sure at least some of you are kee…
