- DEV DIARY 6c: A Look at Doctors - 11 September 2026
Doctors investigate the murder through blood splatter. Doctor profession icon; Doctor collecting blood splatter evidence; full-body front-view of Doctor.Their blood splatter kit allows them to collect blood evidence from the crime scene and compare it against blood splatter produced by different weapons. When a murder occurs, blood splatter is left around the body. A Doctor can use their splatter kit at the crime scene to document that evidence. But knowing what the blood looks like isn't enough. Doctors needs to figure out which weapon created it. Different weapons produce different blood splatter patterns. During the investigation, Doctors can purchase weapons from market stalls and take them back to the hospital laboratory. There, they can swing the weapon against a chunk of meat to produce its blood splatter pattern. That pattern is added to their blood splatter kit and labelled wit…
- DEV DIARY 6b: A Look at Police - 10 September 2026
Police investigators specialize in fingerprint evidence. Police profession icon; Police inspecting footprints; full-body front-view of Police.Using their fingerprint kit, Police players can collect fingerprints from other players and compare them against fingerprints found on objects throughout Whitechapel. Collecting fingerprints requires ink, which can be purchased from vendors. Once a Police player has ink, they can take another player's fingerprints and add them to their fingerprint log. The log keeps track of which fingerprint belongs to which player, giving Police investigators a way to identify fingerprints they discover during the investigation. That becomes especially useful when a fingerprint is found on an item connected to the murder. Police players can compare the fingerprint on a weapon against the prints they've collected, potentially connecting a player to a weapon invol…
- DEV DIARY 6a: A Look at News Hawks - 9 September 2026
News Hawks are investigators of information in Whitechapel. News Hawk profession icon; News Hawk taking a camera; full-body front-view of News Hawk.Using their camera, News Haws can take photographs of other players and bring those photos to witnesses throughout the city. Witnesses can then provide information about whether the person in the photograph passed through their area before the murder. But getting that information isn't quite as simple as pointing the camera and asking questions. News Hawks need film to take photographs, and they'll need to find witnesses around Whitechapel who can provide useful information. Each witness only knows what they've seen, so a News Hawk may need to visit several witnesses to build a clearer picture of a player's movements. As information is collected, it is added to the back of the photograph as a sketch map showing where that player was seen. Th…
- DEV DIARY 6: A Look at the Professions - 8 September 2026
In Whitechapel, everyone has a role to play. When a murder occurs in Ripper Mode, figuring out who is responsible means gathering evidence, comparing information, and working together to separate the truth from the lies. That's where professions come in. At the start of each match, players will be able to choose from one of three professions: News Hawk, Police, or Doctor. Each profession has its own jobs, investigation tools, and ways of gathering evidence. No single profession has everything they need to identify the Ripper. You'll need to work together, share what you've discovered, and hopefully figure out who you can trust! Join us throughout the week as we look at the News Hawk, Police, and Doctor professions to see how each one works in detail! The icons for Police, Doctor, and News Hawk. Players will see these above job boards and other areas. While each profession specializes in…

- DEV DIARY #5: Death Isn't Forever - 10 August 2026
In Whitechapel, death is rarely the end of the story. One of the biggest challenges while designing 4 Penny Coffins was answering a simple question: "What happens when a player dies?" In many multiplayer games, death means waiting. You spend the rest of the match watching other people have fun while you hope the round ends quickly. We wanted to avoid that entirely. Instead, we designed death to be another part of the investigation. Justice Comes to Whitechapel Every night ends with a difficult decision. Players gather in the gallows, present their evidence, challenge each other's stories and alibis, and ultimately decide who should face conviction. The conviction phase is one of the most dramatic moments in every match - it is where suspicion becomes accusations, alibis are second-guessed, and a single vote can change everything. Bringing the Gallows to Life One of our goals was making…
- DEV DIARY #4: A Look at 4 Penny Coffins' Game Modes - 16 July 2026
One of the questions we hear most often is: "What's the difference between Magistrate Mode and Ripper Mode?"While both modes share the same Victorian world, investigation mechanics, and evidence systems, they're designed to deliver two very different experiences. So, What is the Difference?Magistrate Mode is a replayable investigation campaign for 1-5 players, where you and your team work together to solve procedurally generated cases against an AI-controlled Ripper.Ripper Mode transforms those same investigative mechanics into a tense 6-8 player social investigation experience, where one player secretly becomes the Ripper and everyone else must uncover the truth before it's too late.Whether you prefer cooperative detective work or outsmarting your friends through deception, there's more than one way to survive Whitechapel. Be sure to wishlist 4 Penny Coffins so you see future news, dev…
- DEV DIARY #3: Evidence is Everything - 3 July 2026
In most social deduction games, players rely on instinct, behavior, verbal testimony, and social cues to uncover the truth. In 4 Penny Coffins, evidence is key, but it doesn't always mean truth. We wanted players to feel like they were building a case the way a detective would, which meant introducing physical evidence that players could collect, share, and draw conclusions from. At the same time, we wanted to preserve the social element that makes the genre so compelling. Every crime scene leaves behind fingerprints, witnesses, footprints, receipts, and other clues that can implicate suspects, confirm alibis, or completely derail an investigation. Designing Evidence in 4 Penny Coffins Designing evidence turned out to be a balancing act. Evidence that is too bulletproof is unsatisfying for both the Ripper and Innocents. The Ripper feels unfairly exposed, while Innocents are robbed of th…
- DEV DIARY #2: A Look at the Ripper - 16 June 2026
A Look at the Ripper in 4 Penny Coffins In 4 Penny Coffins, one player takes on the role of the Ripper: a victim of demonic possession that demands bloodshed at any cost. While innocent players investigate crime scenes, compare evidence, and attempt to uncover the truth, the Ripper works in the shadows manipulating suspicion to survive long enough to carry out the demon’s will. Unlike the antagonists in many social deduction games, the Ripper in 4 Penny Coffins is not just trying to convince others they are innocent. The role is built around manipulating the investigation through pressure, escalation, and calculated risk. Every murder creates evidence. Every witness becomes a threat. Every decision can shift the investigation closer toward the Ripper’s conviction. The Ripper’s Goal To win in Ripper mode, the Ripper must: commit 2 murders over the course of 2 nightsavoid being convicted…
