  • Abject Abyss Update 1.2.2 - 7 July 2026

Updated Abject Abyss to 1.2.2This is a tiny update.Game no longer saves in the shuttle bay, allowing you to replay the final couple of minutes to get the bad ending if you didn’t the first time. (Obviously this isn’t retroactive, sorry. Pre-existing final saves are unaffected.)Slightly changed the Upper Labs balancing for players who are struggling and dying a lot. At a certain point it’ll just stop spawning a monster at all.Couple of minor bug fixesI'm working hard on my second game. Doesn't mean I have to abandon this one though, keep using the bug report button in the pause menu if you find anything!

  • What's next - 25 June 2026

Since the launch of Abject Abyss, I’ve been working hard on my next game.I’m not quite ready to fully announce what it is yet, but I’ve got a little bit of info I can give.As a reminder, this is not a sequel. I need a break from Sci-Fi. Interactable objects to throw aroundFirst big change, Game#2 will have physics!I specifically didn’t try to do this in Abject Abyss because I knew it’d be too much work for my first game. Now, I feel more confident. It’s still going to be a pain in the ass, but it adds so much to the tactility of the world. It's tricky to sell an objects weight and material through this kind of interaction, but it’s going quite well so far. This also includes destructible objects, which is even more work! Swinging DoorsThe doors are physics based now too, so you'll need to use the mouse or thumbstick to swing them open and closed. This technique was popularized by Frictio…

  • Abject Abyss Soundtrack Release - 30 April 2026

The soundtrack is out now! Now, you might be thinking: "Sure, the music did a perfectly good job sitting in the background and adding to the mood, but it's not exactly good listening on it's own. Why would I want to buy that exactly?"And that'd be a very reasonable take. But there is another reason you might want to buy these inexpertly composed tracks. I'm releasing it under the CC-BY license. You can go to the Creative Commons website to get full details, and there is a license.txt file included in the download. But the important stuff is:You can use any of these tracks in your own projects, as long as you credit me somewhere. This includes commercial projectsYou can modify the files however you wantI made the soundtrack for this game on my own, despite not really having any pre-existing knowledge on how to do it, because I simply could not afford a composer.I imagine that's a very comm…

  • Abject Abyss Update 1.2.1 - 22 April 2026

Updated Abject Abyss to 1.2.1Keybinding menu now looks less ugly and matches the rest of the settings menusControls tab no longer locks you out of the other tabsReset all bindings button works properlyNot much game-wise in this update, just tidying up the keybinding menu from it's very janky first implementation. It's still got some jank, but less.

  • Abject Abyss Update 1.2.0 - 20 April 2026

Updated Abject Abyss to 1.2.0Added key re-bindings menu to options (It has issues, I go into more detail below)Fixed a typo on the map in Hyrdo primary (Acess changed to Access)Fixed blurry screen in upper labs. I think. It's fixed on my system, if I'm wrong let me know.KEY REBINDINGSOkay, this was a heavily requested feature and I really should have had it at launch, lesson learned for next time. The new key binding menu functions, but is very basic and has some known issues.ISSUES:It does not check for double ups, so you could theoretically bind every input to the same buttonDoes not function for controllers, only KB/M inputs acceptedThe 'Reset Settings' button does not work! It was working in the dev build, but is broken in the shipping one! The individual reset binding buttons for each action work fine though. Just can't do them all at onceOnly accepts a single input per action. (Thi…

  • Abject Abyss Update 1.1.9 - 15 April 2026

Updated Abject Abyss to 1.1.9Fixed a bug where a checkpoint save occurred when picking up a critical item, but before the item was added to the player inventory, causing a potential soft-lock on death unless you restarted the levelFurther tweaks to the new low-item spawn systemIf you miss the Stun-gun pickup, another will now spawn slightly hidden in upper labs. If you miss that one too you're on you're ownUpper labs now checks your deaths in the level against progress towards finishing it when deciding whether to respawn the enemy on a checkpoint loadI'm working on adding a key binding menu, but it's being a real pain in the ass.

  • Abject Abyss Update 1.1.8 - 12 April 2026

Updated Abject Abyss to 1.1.8Added a map to a few spots in EquipmentCreated a system were extra Health Stims and Stun Ammo can spawn into the world if you have none left in your inventorySlightly increased the speed boost from energy drinksSlightly increased light radius from the max glowrod upgrade2 second increase in how long enemies are stunned forLong-Neck monster now swaps the music from chase to danger slightly earlier after loosing sight of youLong-Neck monster now has slightly louder footstepsSome other minor tweaks and fixes

  • Abject Abyss Update 1.1.7 - 11 April 2026

Updated the game to version 1.1.7Fixed an issue where the 'Luminous' achievement wouldn't trigger properly. (You don't have to restart and pick up the glow rod again to get it, it will now check achievement requirements a few seconds after loading a save or entering a new level)Also added a flag to give the achievement for turning the reactor on after the demo section, in case someone played the demo first then loaded the save into the full gameFixed a screen issue with a terminal in the upper labsRe-worded a few notes and emails for claritySubtitles for Henry's intercom call no longer disappear before he's finished speakingI've got another larger patch in the works, but wanted to get this one out first so people can actually 100% the achievements.

  • Abject Abyss Released! - 8 April 2026

IT'S FINISHED!At last, the game is out. It’s taken a while, but it was my first time going through the process after all.First I’ll go over the basic stuff you may want to know right away, then after that I’ll go into more detail about the game, development, how I feel about it, and all that additional stuff that only a few people actually care about. Here’s the important stuff:How long is the game? Playtime so far has been 1.5 -2.5 hours, some players taking quite a bit longer.Bugs?I’ve fixed every bug I’ve found, but when you let a game out into the world people always find more. If you do, use the bug-report button inside the game to let me know. You can also post on the game’s steam discussion page.Performance?Future patches may offer performance improvements, but the game does appear to run on a wide range of machines, especially if you turn off Lumen. If you aren’t sure how it’ll…

  • THE FINAL STRETCH - 2 March 2026

Abject Abyss is nearly finished! It feels like I’ve been at 95% for ages, but those last few percent are always the hardest. Now that we’re in the final stretch, I wanted to go over a few things, answer some questions, and set expectations.RELEASE DATE?The internal date I’m aiming for is getting very near, and I’m pretty confident I can hit it, but I’m not going to make it public until it’s absolutely 100% locked in.GAME CONTENT?The scope of this game started tiny, then sort of ballooned a little, and eventually I made the decision to cut things back down and keep it focused. The sooner I can complete this first project, the sooner I can apply everything I’ve learned to the next one.So the final game is on the shorter side, but the price reflects that. I reckon it’s a fair trade.I’m proud of what’s there. Abject Abyss is still the kind of game I enjoy playing, and that’s important to me.…

  • Demo Update 0.2.9 - 22 February 2026

Updated the game to version 0.2.9Next Fest tomorrow! Tiny update ahead of that.Fixed a bug where using some items would turn off the center reticle until you opened and closed the inventory screen againCouple other tiny bug fixesThe usual small tweaksSurgical robot has head-tracking when it sees you now, though it’s barely noticeable, it still turns to look where he's going around corners.Demo end screen now says the full game is coming soon, which it is. It’s like 99% done, but that last 1% is being a huge pain

  • Demo Update 0.2.8 - 26 January 2026

Updated the game to version 0.2.8Steam Next fest is coming up in February and Abject Abyss will be included, so I’m updating the demo to the latest version ahead of the event. It's not a big one, most of the work I've been doing is on everything past the demo, but a few things have changed and I want to make sure next fest is up to date.Mostly just built up small tweaksSlightly re-paced the start of the chase section in the demoSimplified demo end screenSmall text updatesChanged an email on Ernest’s terminal

  • Demo update 0.2.7 - 10 November 2025

Updated the game to version 0.2.7Added a lot of small environment detailsAdded a few extra scattered props around, including some magazinesAdded signage and Luminary framed posters across the facilityAdded faint grunge textures to some areasA few additions to level geoFixed an issue where the reticle wouldn’t return after using the transistor manualFixed an issue with footstep volume when crouchedCorner lean no longer jitters when used while crouchedAudio tweaksAnimation tweaks

  • Designing the Abyss - 4 November 2025

Art StyleStyle and art direction are far more important than fidelity when it comes to how a game looks. Which is handy for me, because I have to make all the assets myself. I’m not saying Abject Abyss has outstanding art direction or anything, but I think it’s fair to say it has a ‘look’ that’s distinct from other similar titles. A look born out of limitations and compromises as much as my actual vision for the design.Keeping things simplePrevious small projects I’ve made have leaned into the retro ‘haunted-ps1’ look, because it makes asset creation incredibly fast, and removes most optimisation concerns. I like that style and I still think its fun, but it’s not what I wanted for Abject Abyss. I wanted proper PBR materials, dynamic lights, and an actual graphics options menu. But I didn’t want to aim for photoreal, or really anywhere close to that. The problem with making super high qu…

  • Demo update 0.2.6 - 18 August 2025

Updated the game to version 0.2.6Added options to invert the Y and X axisFixed an issue where you couldn’t navigate the options menu with a controller unless you used a mouse firstAdded shadow quality option to settingsMinor gameplay tweak

  • Self Defence on Marzanna - 17 August 2025

Though combat is not the focus of Abject Abyss, you can still find ways of defending yourself in a pinch. The Shock Pistol is a non-lethal weapon used by security officers, but for Ernest it’s a way to temporarily disable enemies and buy time to escape.Ammunition is limited, -one capsule is one shot- but it's accurate and has a decent range. Hitting an enemy will root them in place as they squirm violently under the electrical current, the heat causing smoke to rise from sizzling flesh. If you happen to have several capsules saved you can keep firing to greatly extend the duration of the shock, disorienting and burning the target. It wont stop them, not permanently. But it will give you enough time to run or hide. It's also important to note that you cannot interact while the pistol is drawn, so it’s best to only bring it out when you really need it, then stow it as you make your escape. A…

  • Demo update 0.2.5 - 20 July 2025

Updated Demo build to 0.2.5Made the glow-rod movement a little more dynamic. Reacts to jumping now etc.Moved the FOV slider into display settings. I don’t know why I had it in controls.Added a setting to turn tutorial messages off or on.If tutorials are on, the first chase will prompt the player to run.The monster’s footsteps are also louder in the chase.Added a new item to the Security level as a tease.Slightly changed inventory art for improved powercells.Added a button to the main menu that links to the presskit.Footsteps are now louder when landing after jumping/falling instead of sometimes being very quiet even after a long fall.

  • Demo update 0.2.4 - 7 July 2025

Updated the game to version 0.2.4This update improves the general atmosphere across most of the game, and is the first in a series of planned improvements to the demo.-Big light changes, a few areas completely re-done.-Includes some new props for more varied lighting fixtures.-New audio system added to some areas.-Fixed a light that was only visible with lumen off.-Minor changes to the sounds the first monster makes when spawning.-Tweaked LOD settings on some props.

  • Demo Launch - 25 June 2025

The Demo is out now!At long last, the demo is public on steam. It contains the first 30-60 minutes of the game, enough to give you a solid idea of what to expect. And as a bonus, saves from the demo will carry over in the full game, letting you pick up right where you left off at release. DetailsThis is the first part of the game in it's current state. I'm sure there will be further tweaks and modifications, but what you play in the demo is mostly the same thing a new player at release would get. The demo will be kept up to date with the full game at least until release, and I do intended to leave the demo up after launch. That way people can try the game free for a while to see if they're interested before having to spend any money.Bugs?I've ironed out a lot of bugs so far, but if you happen to discover a new one, there is a button in the pause menu that links to a bug-report form. (Th…

  • Closed Playtesting - 16 February 2025

The first playtest build of Abject Abyss is nearly ready! Right now, there is still time to sign up to be one of the first testers, but the cut off will be soon. (Though you can still join the mailing list after and potentially gain access to later events.) Note: playtesting signups have now closed. What will the playtest include? It'll be the first part of the game, the same section that will eventually become the public demo. It's got all the basic elements of the game, enough to give people an idea of what the rest will be like. How long will it take until the demo is released? It'll depend on how many problems the playtesting uncovers. I want to at least get all the major issues handled before the public demo, because you know that demo's gonna reveal even more. But even worst case scenario, I reckon it wont be too long before something gets out to the public. How long exactly is th…
