- Dev Log #7 - Preparing for our Public Demo and Release - 6 August 2026
So much to talk about!Greetings captains! It's been a busy few months here at Shrimp Fried Games, as we've been heads down to get the public demo out and prep for a 2026 game release (if all goes well!).There's too much awesome new content and feature additions to talk about, but I'll do my best!NPC Fleets and BehaviorsFirst off, NPC ships now often travel as fleets in specific formations. Everything from small 3-frigate scout fleets to battleship-led battle forces, these ships now stay in formation and prove much more difficult to fight against than lone ships trickling in one at a time. It also looks awesome. Most of the time, fleets will break formation when combat truly starts and carefully plodding ship formations descend into the chaos of battle. Below you can see the beginning of a pirate fleet running headfirst into a Coalition task force. This also means that missions where you e…
- Dev Log #6 - Showing Off the New Aesthetics - 9 April 2026
Greetings captains!Instead of a feature deep dive, I wanted to showcase a whole bunch of upcoming visual improvements in the lead-up to the new playtest and the wrap-up of game development. Be ready for a very visuals-heavy dev log! AestheticsIn addition to wrapping up game systems, I've made a few passes at in-battle rendering with a focus on lights, effects, and the backgrounds. As a result, battles should feel much more lifelike. Take this new screenshot for example.Global LightingFirst off, lighting has been completely overhauled. The Last Captain has switched away from the camera's default auto-exposure values and manually adjusted them so that different levels have drastically different moods. The space backgrounds have also been updated to much higher fidelity. Just compare these two images of the same battle in different lighting conditions: Individual Ship LightingAll ships and…
- Dev Log #5 - Shields - 22 December 2025
Since our last updateHey everyone! Been a quiet (but busy) couple of months here at Shrimp Fried Games. First of all, if you haven't seen our new trailer yet:Those who have been following us for a little while might have noticed two new interesting additions. Ships now have shields, and there is officially a fourth faction 👀We'll spotlight our mysterious new faction at a later date, though know that they are a core part of The Last Captain story and feature heavily in the campaign. In the meantime...Shields!Yes, shields are officially in the game! A core staple of many Sci-Fi franchises, shields provide a visually distinct protective layer around ships and drastically increase their longevity. When approaching shields for Last Captain, I wanted to make sure that they: Had a unique lookWere not just a second healthbarGenerally made the game more interestingIn progress shieldsNote how th…
- Dev Log #4 - First look at the Last Captain's campaign - 15 September 2025
The Last Captain CampaignLong have I waited to start sharing updates around the campaign. It combines the action-packed tactical gameplay of individual missions with the overarching story, the factions, and deep ship customization systems. As we take our first look, please remember the UI is still a work in progress! The StarmapAt the heart of the campaign is the Starmap - a visual center for everything happening in the Pyre sector. The player is thrust into this unstable sector, teeming with various factions that can be fought, negotiated with, or even befriended. From the pragmatic Coalition, to the nefarious pirates, each has their own distinct agenda, culture, and - in combat - their own strategy. While certain factions will remain hostile throughout the duration of the campaign, others will offer missions which will build your reputation with them. High reputation isn't merely a feel…
- Dev Log #3 - Deep Dive into Convoy Defense - 11 August 2025
Let's chat Convoy DefenseToday, we're going to deep dive into the new co-op mode and the feedback we've received so far. But before we get into all that, let's start with some new equipment added since the last dev log.New goodiesThe Javelin MissileNamed after the ancient throwing weapon as well as the contemporary anti-tank guided missile, the javelin is the newest weapon added to The Last Captain. It's a long-range homing missile that features incredible top speed. This means it's difficult to shoot down since it barrels at its target quickly, and when it does hit, it causes devastating damage. However, it's far from unstoppable; it takes time to accelerate to top speed, and it has poor course correction and maneuverability once it's underway. This means that smaller targets have an easier time escaping it compared to larger targets at range. Additionally, because the Javelin begins wi…
- Dev Log #2 - Cooperative Play - 19 June 2025
What's new?Today, we're going to chat about new weapons, a new biome, a new game mode, and a movement update! Unfortunately, play tests have been more sparse than usual over the past couple of weeks since my place had a major plumbing issue and the downstairs was partially flooded. ːsteamsadː After a hard battle that included fans, dehumidifiers, and restored carpet, we can put that saga to rest. And now we are so back, and we've got lots of goodies in this one, so strap in and enjoy.LASER BEAMSPlease welcome our two newest loadout options, Beam Point Defense and the Cutting Laser!Beam Point DefenseNothing is more accurate than a laser, and Beam Point Defense takes advantage of this to the fullest. It rewards steady aim, and excels at taking out large groups of smaller missiles. Since it doesn't need to be reloaded, it also has the highest uptime of any point defense, and should be stron…
- Dev Log #1 - Let's Chat Multiplayer - 27 May 2025
Hey there! Thanks for checking out the first Dev Blog! So what is The Last Captain? In case you missed it, Last Captain is a top-down, space shooter RPG that balances precision with tactics, complete with a co-op campaign and multiplayer. Check out the Steam Page for the latest! https://store.steampowered.com/app/3700200/The_Last_Captain/ Why start with multiplayer? In terms of development, getting replication (multiplayer) right is arguably the trickiest thing to implement in a game. To minimize risk, getting it right from the outset is key. Retroactively adding multiplayer is drastically more challenging—the dev equivalent of remembering to add tomato sauce to an already baked pizza. Besides technical considerations, I also wasn't sure if multiplayer would really work. Not in a literal sense, but in a "is it fun?" sense. I'm happy to say - yes. It's pretty damn fun. Above: Exchanging…
