  • Devlog #10: We Made a Deckbuilder. Except We Didn't - 6 October 2026

Hi everyone, Scott hereWho here loves deckbuilders? I do. You generally start with a small, usually fairly mediocre deck of cards. As you play, you acquire new cards, remove old ones, and gradually build a deck that works better and better. Much turn-based combat ensues! There are lots of towering greats in the genre: Slay the Spire, Dominion, Monster Train, Inscryption, to name but a few. When we started dreaming up Curse of Resthaven, deckbuilders were one of our touchstones. Like a lot of ideas, it came out of the question: “How can we do this really ambitious thing, knowing the constraints we have as a small team?”My best design ideas come out of this kind of thinking. The deckbuilder genre gave us a really useful set of symbols and interactions that many players already understand, letting us tackle some ambitious ideas without having to reinvent the wheel every time.So yes, Curse o…

  • Devlog #9: Hello, Again - Narrative Design Timeloop Troubles - 9 September 2026

Hi. I’m Matt. How are you? Good Day. Good to see you. Hello. Have we done this before? You only get one chance to make a good impression… Well, luckily in Curse of Resthaven, that's the furthest thing from the truth.A big part of our game is interacting with the cursed colonists of Resthaven. So, obviously, they need things to say (let me know if I'm going too fast). One of these things is an introduction for when they meet the new governor of the island for the first time. Each intro needs to give the player a sense of the character, but not give away too much about them… (not too short, not too long). It would be their, the protagonist’s, and the player’s, first impression, and, as they say, you only get one chance to make a good one of those. So we gave everybody an introduction. Then we had to write a few additional greetings for them; what they would say when you clicked on them aga…

  • Curse of Resthaven: Cast Announcement - 2 September 2026

One of the biggest pieces of Curse of Resthaven is now in the can: we’ve officially wrapped voice recording for the game. And because I enjoy a good statistic, here’s what that amounted to:11 actors25 charactersNearly 7,000 voiced lines20 recording sessions, at three hours eachAround 60 hours in the boothFour actors returning from Lil’ GuardsmanPictured: Hailey Gillis (Amalia) / Jan Alexandra Smith (Evelyn) with David Leyshon (Garet)A Cast Built From the StageOne of the things that makes this cast particularly special to me is that many of these actors come from the Canadian theatre community, where I spent much of my life before making games.Ontario is home to two extraordinary theatre institutions: the Shaw Festival and the Stratford Festival. Between them, there’s an incredible pool of actors with backgrounds in Shakespeare, classical theatre, period drama, and all manner of heightene…

  • 10,000 wishlists and counting. Thank you everyone! - 13 August 2026

Curse of Resthaven has just passed 10,000 wishlists here on Steam! From everyone at Hilltop Studios and Bandidos, we want to say a huge thank you to everyone who has added this game to their lists – we can’t wait to get the full experience into your hands later this year.An ever bigger thank you to everyone who has played the demo (not done so yet? You can rectify that right here), and even more so to everyone who has left us feedback and reviews. It’s been so wonderful to see you all engaging with Curse of Resthaven – especially those who have poured five hours or more into a demo that’s designed to be finished in two. We were fairly confident that the game’s unique blend of mechanics and its gripping overarching mystery would keep players wanting more, and words cannot describe how it feels to see that become a reality. We’re hard at work on finishing the rest of the game, and cannot w…

  • Demo + Discord Launch Day! - 31 July 2026

Hi everyone, Scott here.Today is probably the biggest day in Curse of Resthaven’s journey so far: our demo and the new Hilltop Studios Discord are launching as we speak! We hope you’re excited to play the former, and that you’ll join us in the latter to tell us what you think.THE DEMOIf you’re reading this and it’s news to you: get ye to the demo HERE Your journey to Resthaven begins here Curse of Resthaven is an intricate puzzle box of a week-long time loop, combining investigation, trading, interrogation, town management, and card-driven expeditions. There’s a lot going on, so one of our biggest challenges was figuring out how to create a demo that felt substantial and satisfying, while still leaving players hungry to see what happens next.It all came down to how we handled the time loop. For the demo, we shortened the loop to two days, which you play through three times. We wanted to i…

  • Devlog #8: Songs for the End of the World - 23 July 2026

Hi everyone, Scott here! Before I got into games, my first career was as a composer and musical director. So when I started Hilltop Studios, I knew music wouldn't just accompany our games, it would help define them. One of the happiest surprises from Lil' Guardsman was discovering just how many players cited its musical theatre sequence as their favourite moment. That reinforced something I'd suspected all along: there was value in bringing my previous career into game development, not just by writing a soundtrack, but by thinking about music as a storytelling tool. One of the central locations in Curse of Resthaven is the Black Pony Tavern (named after the Toronto coffee shop near my house, where our remote team has held countless meetings). From the beginning, I knew a world inspired by the 18th century, filtered through a gothic fantasy lens, deserved a bard. But I didn't want the usual…

  • Devlog #7: Time Loop 2 - Electric Boogaloo - 9 July 2026

Hi everyone, Scott here.Matt recently wrote an excellent post about time loop games in general, and where Curse of Resthaven fits alongside them. If you haven't read it yet, start there.I wanted to get into the weeds a little more and talk about how our loop actually works. One of the funny things about marketing a time loop game is that every trailer is technically a spoiler. For roughly the first hour of Curse of Resthaven, Governor Ambrose has no idea what's coming. You, the player, absolutely do.I'll avoid spoiling how the loop nests into the narrative. That's something I'm really excited for players to experience themselves, but I can pull back the curtain on some of the systems that make it tick.Building a Colony... AgainYou arrive in Resthaven as its newly appointed governor, only to discover a colony that's... seen better days.Every business has fallen to its lowest tier, produci…

  • Devlog #6: Am I Imagining Things, or Does Gamepad Make Our Game More Fun? - 24 June 2026

Hi! My name is Adolfo Rico, and I'm the Technical Director at Hilltop Studios, and Lead Programmer working on Curse of Resthaven.I was fortunate enough to join Hilltop Studios during development of Lil' Guardsman. Today I wanted to talk about some of the work I've been doing recently on Resthaven, and how it's built on lessons we learned making our first game. While a lot of my time lately has been spent polishing the upcoming demo and squashing bugs, one of my biggest focuses has been gamepad support and Steam Deck compatibility (more on that later).Making Curse of Resthaven feel great on a controller has been a much bigger challenge than it was for Lil' Guardsman. The bigger challenge comes from all the simulation and management DNA we’re incorporating: merchant haggling, town vendors, upgrades, inventories, progression systems, tooltips, nested menus… those systems are easy to design…

  • Devlog #5: The Art of the Concept – Toronto Games Week - 17 June 2026

Hey everyone, Scott here.Curse of Resthaven was one of nine Toronto-based indies selected to participate in The Art of the Concept, a week-long exhibition presented as part of Toronto Games Week. The exhibit showcases posters created by participating teams, highlighting the concept art, sketches, and creative process that help bring game worlds to life. Our art team Clayton Nguyen and Maddy Woodland created an insanely beautiful poster featuring a collection of Curse of Resthaven concept art that shows the evolution of our game’s visual identity. From early explorations and character designs, to environmental concepts and finished illustrations, our poster captures both the artistic journey and the spirit of the game.We asked Gavin McCarthy, creator of the exhibit and concept artist himself, what made Curse of Resthaven stand out among the other submissions. He told us:"Resthaven is uni…

  • Devlog #4: Recent Curse of Resthaven Redesigns - 3 June 2026

Hi everyone, Scott here.Earlier this week, after our new trailer dropped (check it out below if you haven't already!), our publisher Digital Bandidos asked if I wanted to take the old one down. A lot has changed since we first revealed Curse of Resthaven back in February.I said no.One of my favourite things on a Steam page is watching a game evolve publicly. If a project has multiple trailers, I’ll usually watch all of them. Together, they can tell a fascinating behind-the-scenes story of development.Initial trailers are famously held together with thumbtacks and Elmer’s glue (the Firewatch reveal trailer is a classic example), and ours wasn’t much different. All of our core systems were playable, but we had to carefully cut around a lot of rough, unfinished assets. In that first trailer, you’re basically seeing the 10% of the game that wasn’t still in sketch form. Four more months of p…

  • Devlog #3: The Challenges of Writing a Time Loop Game - 15 April 2026

Hi everyone, it’s Matt. I’m one of the writers and game designers for Curse of Resthaven! When we were coming up with the story for CoR, we knew we didn’t want it to be a simple beginning, middle, and end sort of affair. We were keen to try something different, so we introduced the idea of a time loop as an additional mechanic for world building, discovery, and replayability.Six days after you arrive at Resthaven, a cataclysm wipes out the colony and all its inhabitants. The island’s fading goddess sends you back to the moment of your arrival, with your choice of boon to help you make progress on your next run.The obvious benefit of having a time loop mechanic in your video game is it gives a player an opportunity to replay scenarios. Whether it’s repeating entire days/weeks, or rewinding a few seconds of action/combat, it gives the player a vehicle to do a couple of things:See a proble…

  • Devlog #2: Meet the Hilltop Studios team - 12 March 2026

Hi everyone, thanks so much for the continued support for Curse of Resthaven. It’s been an amazing two weeks since the announcement, and we’re thrilled to see so many of you getting excited about the game. This week, we wanted to introduce the team behind it. Hilltop Studios is primarily based in Toronto, Canada, with one of our key team members working out of Mexico. The Curse of Resthaven team is a mix of folks who worked on our first game, Lil’ Guardsman, along with some new faces helping bring the island of Resthaven to life. Background I co-founded Lienzo Studios, where I worked as Lead Programmer and Game Designer on three multi-platform games: Hunter’s Legacy, Mulaka, and Aztech: Forgotten Gods. I first joined Hilltop Studios to help with a research project for Nike, designing and programming a motion-controlled minigame collection. After that, I stayed on to help finish Lil’ Guard…

  • Devlog #1: Introducing Curse of Resthaven - 25 February 2026

Hi, I’m Scott Christian, game director (AKA wearer of many hats) for Curse of Resthaven. My indie studio, Hilltop, shipped our first game, Lil’ Guardsman, about two years ago and since March of last year, our team has been hunkered down… wreathed in a mysterious fog for some reason… building something very different.Announcing Curse of Resthaven and hitting “publish” on the Steam page was a surreal rush. I’m excited to launch our first dev diary, and begin our process of sharing what’s going on behind the scenes: how the concept came together, what we’re experimenting with, and what it’s really like building a gothic horror roguelite as a tiny studio here in Toronto, Canada. What is Curse of Resthaven? At its heart, CoR is a genre-bending gothic mystery. It blends investigation and exploration with trading, light colony management, deck-building elements, and a seven-day time loop. You pl…
