While Fallout is Bethesda's baby these days, it wasn't the original creator of the iconic RPG series. That was Interplay, the company that infamously told departing employees to destroy any remnants of work they had on its games. That's led to a years-long mystery around whether the original source code for Fallout 1 and Fallout 2 actually survived, with the series' original producer Tim Cain claiming recently shining a light on Interplay's anti-preservation tactics. Jason Damron, the voice actor behind The Storyteller - the main character of a long-running and popular fan-made Fallout lore video series on YouTube - appears to have died. This is according to a tweet posted earlier today by Damron's account, which uses his online handle Kankennon and is the same one credited in the descriptions of the most recent Storyteller videos starring him. "Hello everyone, I am Emily Damron, Jason Damron's (the Storyteller) daughter," it reads, "I just wanted to share that on Saturday September 7, my father passed away after a horrible year of health. He was diagnosed with stage four adrenal cancer that spread to the liver." Read more

Original Fallout co-creator Tim Cain has discussed the idea of whether he'd be interested in potentially working on the series again, if he were asked to. The developer says his interest in any Fallout project he was pitched would mainly come down to one key element - "What's new about it?" If you're not aware, Cain has a YouTube channel where he regularly tells development stories from his lengthy career in the games industry - such as recently revealing his role in the events that led to the cancellation of Fallout Van Buren , Interplay's original Fallout 3. He also sometimes responds to questions asked by fans, which is what he was doing this time. Original Fallout co-creator Tim Cain has revealed that he played a role in the events that led to the cancellation of Fallout Van Buren, the codename for the original version of Fallout 3 which was in development at Interplay-owned Black Isle Studios in the early 2000s. If you need a refresher, this took place back in 2002/2003, a good few years before Bethesda bought the IP and went on to make the Fallout 3 we actually ended up getting. Cain had actually left Interplay at the point the game was being developed, having departed to start a studio called Troika Games after working on the first two Fallout games. Now, in a video on his YouTube channel, (thanks, IGN ) Cain has revealed that in the middle of 2003, an unnamed Interplay vice president asked him to come and play the current prototype of Van Buren. Turns out that the Fallout show has gotten everyone in the mood to play the games, as pretty much every title in the series has seen their player count skyrocket. Last week, Prime Video finally released its live-action adaptation of Fallout, which was quickly met with positive reviews all around. So, it should come as no surprise that players would get a hankering for the games too, which is exactly what happened. In fact, at least according to SteamDB stats, players returned to all of the Fallout games in droves, though some admittedly more than others. Fallout 4 saw the most players in game over the weekend, hitting a player count peak of 83,491 on Sunday - bear in mind a week earlier the game's player count peak was at around 24,000, so it's more than tripled its player count following the release of the show last week. Fallout 5 is still a speck in the distance as developer Bethesda Games Studios focuses on post-launch Starfield content and development of The Elder Scrolls 6. However, the retro-futuristic, post-apocalyptic series is back in the spotlight with an all-new tale in the form of an Amazon Prime show from Westworld creators Lisa Joy and Jonathan Nolan. Ahead of its debut, I attended a special press screening for PCGamesN in London, where I watched the first two episodes of the new series. It's been almost nine years since the release of Fallout 4 . Of course, we've had Starfield, Fallout 76, and the first teaser for The Elder Scrolls 6 in between, but the superlative Bethesda apocalypse series nevertheless feels due a return. We're still waiting for more on the Fallout 4 next-gen update, and of course, the real prize, which is a first look at Fallout 5, but in the meantime, fan projects are keeping the world of Vaults, Deathclaws, and glowing Nuka Cola Quantums alive.
