Fixed some small bugs and soft locks!
- Devlog 5: Beta I - 25 February 2026
Gameplay UpdatesWe continued to improve gameplay and have begun more regular playtests to improve the player's experience! This includes:Implementing grenadesRefining Enemy SpawningContinuing to work on BuffsLevel and Environment WorkWe've begun to really dive into environment art this sprint and how we'll move it forward. Currently the majority of textures and assets are placeholders that we'll update with in-house assets where possible, and pre-made where not!Level work also includes creating puzzles for the train station levels, as well as the foundations of audio logs that will give a narrative drip to the player!Above you see some of the level design at work and key objects in the process of being created. And here is some pretty shots of our Environment Work!Characters and EnemiesWe have continued to make progress on the enemies with different variations, animation work, and making…
- Devlog 5: Pre-Beta - 27 January 2026
Environment Art PlanningWith the foundations of our game laid out, we are able to move on to the making the game look great! Our environment artists used place holder assets to give a feel to the game, while also giving us an idea of the workload required. This helped us reach the decision to use handmade assets where possible, and pre-made assets where necessary!Character and Enemy WorkWe've worked on the character more, both visually and mechanically. Players can now go prone, which will play a role in puzzles found at the stations. Additionally, we are wrapping up weapon visuals! When it comes to enemies, we have begun to work on them. As you can see, they're coming out great! We've also added long range version in the game.MiscellaneousNarrative and DialogueWe have laid out the narrative foundations and "lore" for our game, and have moved on to creating dialogue for the character, PA…
- Devlog 4: Alpha II - 15 December 2025
CharacterWe have been making major progress with our main character model, along with rigging and capturing animations using Mocap!Backend WorkA lot of what we're doing doesn't make as large of an impact visibly, but is crucial to the functioning of our game. This includes:Level and puzzle designSave and Load functionalityEnemy AttacksGameplay TuningMore! MiscellaneousGun StuffWe have started on the rifle model!Continued Logo WorkWe're narrowing in our logo with a new pass! With these last few variations, we'll choose our favorite and begin using it!
- Devlog 3: Alpha I - 25 November 2025
Game LoopWe worked on getting our game loop together. Now the player is able to navigate to generated train cars, fight enemies, and get off to explore the station!InventoryMost of the work done for the inventory is backend. Keeping track of various pick ups and the like. We were also able to work on UI for the inventory for when we are ready to tie the two together.MiscellaneousCollaborationTheater DepartmentWe started to collaborate with the Theater Department for voice acting and mocap work! This included creating actor/character documentation and some sample dialogue. We will hopefully be having auditions soon!History ConsultantAdditionally, a student in the Games Program has a bachelors in History, and volunteered to help consult on the narrative. It’s been very helpful so far in creating an identity for the world (or solar system) of NoRail!Gun StuffWe added more VFX and have a fi…
- Devlog 2: Pre-Alpha - 25 November 2025
LevelsWe have continued the conceptualization and began the implementation of the levels. Level Design is split up into two sections: Station Levels and Train LevelsStation LevelsFor the Station Level, we focused on the layout and how it will function in the game. From a design perspective, the Station itself does not change, but what the player has access to does. For example, a wing or level will be blocked by rubble, preventing the player from access. This allows us to only create one level, and then have some cosmetic differences. Loot spawns will also be randomized.Train LevelsRegarding the Train Levels, the design functions more similarly to other roguelike games. Rooms will be pre-made. There will be some simple cosmetic changes to add variety, however. We have several encounter types, including waves, timed survival, and defeating all the enemies. These can also be randomized de…
- Devlog 1: Prototype - 21 November 2025
PitchingThis sprint began with team formation, then the pitching of game concepts. Everyone had a couple of days to prepare, and then we pitched to the group. We went through a couple of rounds of voting and ended on “NoRail.”Pre-ProductionWe spent a fair amount of time on Pre-Production items. Key items include our Social Contract, RACI Chart, Production Tool Setup (Miro, Trello, etc..), and beginning to form our LLC. Additionally, we developed our three design pillars (or at least what we think we’ll go with):ActionAtmosphereReplayabilityEngineeringThe engineering team focused on the basics. They set up a third-person character, a couple of basic levels, enemies with simple AI, and the background for inventory.ArtThis sprint had a lot of reference searching and discussion on our art style. We did come up with some general theming revolving around a Y2K time frame and liminal/uncanny a…
