- Ratocalypse Dev Diary #12 - Making the Opening - 4 September 2026
Cheese: Hello, everyone! This is Cheese from the development team.Last month, we replaced our existing dummy opening with fully finished assets, and showed it off for the first time at BIC, where we recently exhibited .If you stopped by and played the demo there, there's a good chance you already saw it.In this dev diary, we'd like to walk you through how this opening came together.Researching ReferencesWe had experience making animated openings for our previous titles, and , but in both of those games the opening worked more like an intro video that led straight into the title screen. This time, we wanted the opening to play up to the moment a player starts the game, so the game feels more immersive and natural with the actual in-game experience.Since the opening would play at a different point than in our previous titles, we started by looking at other games that tell their story in a…
- Ratocalypse DevDiary #11 - QoL Improvements and Preparing for BIC - 5 August 2026
Cheese: Hello, everyone! This is Cheese from the development team.In this dev diary, we would like to introduce some of the major improvements we have been working on, as well as share how we are preparing to showcase the game at BIC, the indie game festival taking place in Busan this August.Mouse Movement Controls During the PlayX4 exhibition last May, many of the players who tried the game told us that they would like to be able to control more parts of the game using only the mouse.Although most in-game features could already be controlled with the mouse, mouse movement was not available during field exploration. Many players found this limitation inconvenient, so adding mouse movement controls became one of our top priorities for this round of improvements.Moving around using mouse controls Players can now move freely around the field using the mouse, making it possible to play comf…
- Ratocalypse DevDiary #10 - Title Screen - 2 July 2026
Cheese: Hello, everyone. This is Cheese, developer of .In this month’s devlog, we’d like to talk about the very first screen players see when they launch the game: the title screen. Although it has been finished for a little while now, we wanted to walk you through the thought process behind the title illustration, the logo, and the animation work.Reference Research features several key characters and is set in a medieval apocalypse. To capture that atmosphere properly, we started by gathering title illustrations from other games that conveyed a similar mood.Reference title images we collectedSince our game features many characters, we naturally gravitated toward compositions that could place multiple figures within a single illustration in a balanced way.As we began planning the composition based on these references, one important question came up:Which characters should we include in…

Hello, this is Cheese, developer of . Throughout March and April, we conducted our second user test as well as internal testing. After reviewing a wide range of opinions, we decided to revise the flow of combat and several related systems. In this DevDiary, we would like to share what concerns we had with the existing systems of , and how we are reworking the game based on those concerns.Looking Back on the Previous Combat SystemBefore going through the changes one by one, we would first like to look back on what the original system was aiming for, and what we learned throughout the development process so far.The core goal of was to combine the strategic depth of turn-based combat with the fast-paced flow of auto-battle. - Ratocalypse DevDiary #7 - Developing and Using Internal Tools - 24 April 2026
Hello, this is Cheese, currently developing .In March, we focused on improving the tutorial and polishing the game overall in preparation for the second user test, which is currently underway. However, we felt that those topics alone would make this DevDiary a bit lacking. So in this entry, we would like to introduce some of the tools we either created ourselves for development convenience or are currently using, including how they were developed and how they are being used in practice.Map Editor features a total of three expedition themes, and for each theme, we needed to create a variety of map stamps across three difficulty levels. Even if we assume there are only 10 maps per difficulty, that still means designing 30 maps per theme, or 90 maps in total. And since that number does not include event areas or various special maps, the actual number of maps we need is much higher. Becaus…
