"What is death?" With this question in my heart, I visit a cemetery far from the noise of the city. There, I am greeted by a woman—the town’s sole gravekeeper, a quiet watcher of death. She offers neither affirmation nor denial; she simply speaks. Why must we die? What happens after we are gone? Is eternal life beyond our reach? Through conversations with the gravekeeper, I begin to confront the anxieties and fears humanity has carried since the dawn of time. There is no absolute answer to death. The gravekeeper’s philosophy is only her own outlook on life and death—it is not a truth meant for everyone. Even so, in a society where death has grown distant and hard to see, it is my hope that this story offers a moment to reflect on what it means to live a finite life.
