- The NPCs Learned to Say I Don't Know - 22 September 2026
NPC HonestyMost of this stretch went into NPC conversations. When an NPC was asked about something it had no knowledge of, it invented an answer. Across thousands of recorded conversation turns, it never said it didn't know. It would produce a relative who doesn't exist, a promise nobody made, or agree to a shared history that never happened. An NPC with no knowledge of a subject now deflects, asks a question back, or says so. Replies are checked for invented people before they reach you. Claims about a shared past are checked against what that character actually remembers. Real family and neighbour relationships load with the world, so villagers know who they're related to rather than defaulting to a generic acquaintance. On our hardest test questions, NPCs stay grounded about twice as often as before.Conversations between NPCs now take place in the location the speakers are actually sta…
- Dev Update: The World Grew Up - 17 August 2026
Just over 260 commits landed in this stretch, and the biggest piece of it was a ground-up rebuild of how the world itself works. The old system painted locations as flat tiles. The new one gives every place real extent, real memory of what happened there (only what was genuinely witnessed, not omniscient knowledge), and objects that live in the world instead of an abstract list. The server always knows what place you're in, and the client always knows what you're near. That split sounds small, but it's the backbone that lets us keep pouring in content without the old model buckling. Built directly on top of that: you can go inside buildings now. Real doors, a prompt at the threshold, an actual enter-and-exit flow, interior lighting that tracks the sun and doesn't leak light out at night, and NPCs who live in a room actually walking into it on their own. Shops, homes, and workplaces stop…
- Grimmloch Lore: The Waking World - 14 August 2026
The year is 4305 and Valdara is a unified kingdom. Tsarigrad’s soaring marble basilicas and textile mills in the east, Karlingrad’s workshops and ceremonial knights in the west, Ikosium’s shrines and spice markets on the southern coast. Steam-driven looms are replacing hand work, and the first continental railway is under construction. The aristocracy holds the land. The middle class runs the workshops and the working poor grind through days that blur together. The Faith marks birth, marriage, and death but increasingly feels like ritual without substance. This is the world every dreamer comes from, but not every dreamer comes from the same place within it, and the difference matters for how they will experience Grimmloch. Some dreamers grow up in allodial regions, where the folk tradition still runs in unbroken lines from ancestor to child, where the names of the local spirits are comm…
- August Dev Chat: Interiors, Location Awareness, and the Canon Filter - 13 August 2026
We recorded our August dev chat earlier this month and it's now up — come watch us talk through some of the systems we've been building out this summer. Here's what we covered: Interior Spaces We walked through the interior design work underway for Dagmar's Tavern and showed the current state of the decorated spaces. Grimmloch will have around 22–23 fully furnished interiors, and we're building a decoration tool so that staff characters — not just developers — will be able to customize their own spaces over time. The goal is for the world to feel like it belongs to the people who live in it. The Location System When you enter a room in Grimmloch, the world narrates your arrival — and it remembers what's happened there. The location system tracks roleplay changes to the environment at room granularity: the tap room and the back room are distinct spaces with their own state. If a table ge…
- Building the World Around You, Live - 11 August 2026
For a couple of years now we've talked about emergent narrative as the heart of this game — a world that generates its own story out of what people actually do inside it, rather than one that hands you a script and asks you to follow along. The foundation for that is built. The AWEN pipeline is running, the characters in the world can act on their own, and it works ... but right now it is deliberately limited. The world's inhabitants can do a handful of things, and nowhere near the full range of what we eventually want them capable of. That is on purpose, and it is where you come in.Here is what we are actually going to do, and it is a little unusual. We are going to turn testers loose to roleplay, and then we are going to build the world around what they do — live, while they are doing it. Every day we read the roleplay that happened, we look for the story threads worth growing, and we…
- Love TTRPGs? Hate Trying to Schedule Them? - 11 August 2026
You finally found a night everyone can play. Then somebody gets called into work. Somebody's kid gets sick. Somebody has family plans. Somebody simply can't do Thursday anymore."How's everyone looking next week?"Your weekly campaign becomes monthly. Then every six weeks. Then eventually someone says, "We really need to get the group back together."We know. We've been there. So we built the kind of roleplaying world we wished existed when nobody could make game night. One of our early testers described Grimmloch as less like an MMORPG and more like a vast, hundreds-of-players TTRPG campaign that's always there. That's pretty darn close to what we were going for.Create a character, not a build. Make choices the world remembers. Improvise solutions instead of choosing from a list of predetermined options. Find other roleplayers and stumble into stories together, or simply follow your own chara…
- Dev Update: 0.4.0 and World Durability - 6 August 2026
In-TestingOur Alpha testing continues, and we are still accepting applications in Discord for Alpha Testers.Bukenstrand and the NPC Body PipelineThe town of Bukenstrand reached its full location roster of 23 authored places. Each NPC's specific body and pronouns were wired through the import pipeline end to end, fixing a report where a visibly male NPC was describing itself as female. This work is in progress rather than finished — the pipeline is marked untested as of July 22, and getting it verified and merged is the next concrete step. The world-authoring tool, Hollow, was reorganized into a cleaner staged pipeline. The next chapter of world-building, richer points of interest and objects players can interact with, is being designed deliberately rather than bolted on.Character CreationThe long redesign of character creation hit its major milestones this sprint: the state-tracking rebu…
- Grimmloch — Early Alpha Playtest Applications Now Open - 8 June 2026
Grimmloch: Early Alpha Playtest Applications OpenWe’re opening up early alpha playtesting for Grimmloch, running from around the Fourth of July weekend through the end of the year.A quick, honest note on what “early alpha” means: this is genuinely unfinished. Early on, you may meet a build that’s rough or that doesn’t always cooperate and that’s exactly what we need testers to help us find. We’re not in beta yet, and we’re not pretending to be. If helping shape a roleplay simulation from its early stages sounds like your kind of thing, we’d love to have you. This is a months-long build, and the testing unfolds in stages rather than all at once. We start with the foundations, creating a character, logging in, and moving through the world, then bring the world’s characters to life and confirm they remember who you are from one encounter to the next. From there we move into the combat syste…
- Grimmloch's Server Architecture Featured at Akka.NET Community Standup - 10 March 2026
This Wednesday, March 11th, our lead architect David Rivera is presenting Grimmloch's distributed server architecture at the official Akka.NET Community Standup -- an invitation from the framework's creators at Petabridge to show how we built a persistent single-world MMORPG on their technology. The presentation covers how Grimmloch maintains a living world where NPC relationships, player interactions, and world state survive server failures without data loss. The same distributed systems patterns used in federal railroad safety infrastructure are what keep Grimmloch's world running. The stream is public and starts at 12pm CST. LinkedIn event: https://www.linkedin.com/events/7436798784988196864/We are a two-person studio building something that does not exist yet -- a persistent text-based MMORPG designed from the ground up for collaborative storytelling. When the people who build the too…
- Dev Update: 25 Languages, Four Writing Systems, Every Seat at the Table - 26 February 2026
Hey everyone, We just checked 25 language boxes on our Coming Soon page, and we want to tell you what that actually means — because for Grimmloch, localization is not just menus and buttons. Grimmloch is a collaborative storytelling game. The words players write to each other are the game. That means our translation pipeline has to handle roleplay — sarcasm, humor, suspense, emotional weight, cultural idiom. Not just "Press E to interact." So we tested every language against a full tavern scene. A Jötunn bartender delivers a sarcastic joke, a branching conversation unfolds, tension builds, and the scene resolves. We ran all 25 languages through this passage twice. Every single one passed. Here are a few examples of how the bartender’s punchline landed: German: „War nur ’n Scherz. Was darf’s sein, Fremder?“ French: « Je déconne ! Alors, qu’est-ce que tu prends, étranger ? » Czech: „Jo, j…
