The Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster isn't a clean stab at bringing the 2006 classic up to modern standards by any means, yet it's arguably the best way to experience photojournalist Frank West's supermarket dash-and-slash through Willamette Parkview Mall. Launched last year, the latest iteration of Dead Rising followed the studio's trend of having Denuvo anti-tamper tacked on, which, as always, went down like a cup of cold sick with a subsection of players. I suppose it makes sense from a game publisher's point of view to remaster, remake, or otherwise relaunch your most profitable and highly regarded legacy titles. If people loved it the first time, giving them the chance to play it again, either totally rebuilt from the ground up or visually enhanced and tweaked for modern hardware, is about as near as you can get to a surefire hit. It's fine. I enjoyed the Resident Evil remakes. I love the Command and Conquer Remastered Collection. I even bought the new versions of Metal Gear Solid, despite already owning them on basically every console and machine that I have. But I'd like to see a change in sensibility. Like with the recent Star Wars Bounty Hunter re-release, rather than reheating the classics, I'd like to see more game-makers try to improve upon and revive flawed diamonds. I've always had a thing for zombie games. While my adulthood has been spent darting from rooftop to rooftop in Dying Light 2, or freaking out as soon as I see a Witch in Left 4 Dead and deafening my fellow players, the first taste of rancid, undead blood that I got was with Dead Rising 2 . I remember being young (definitely too young) and darting around Palisades Mall armed with the roaring Paddlesaw, chuckling manically as I sawed my enemies into tiny little pieces. Have You Played? is an endless stream of game retrospectives. One a day, every day, perhaps for all time. I never enjoyed horror. Why would I want to engage with media specifically designed to make me anxious and uncomfortable? Not my bag, sorry. Thankfully, zombies often bring the perfect mesh of horror and goofiness that makes the genre far more easy to get into. Telltale’s The Walking Dead, for example, lets you into a world where the horror isn’t in the immediate terror, but rather lies in the interpersonal tension and the fear of assimilation into the mass. Dead Rising doesn’t use zombies in this way. It doesn’t make you question the human condition and the essence of what it is to be alive. No, Dead Rising puts you in a shopping mall and fills it with the undead and a whole pile of toys with which to kill them. (more…)
- 158 jobs lost as Dead Rising developer Capcom Vancouver closes down - 18 September 2018
Capcom Game Studio Vancouver – the team behind Dead Rising 2 , 3 and 4 – is no more. Confirmed in a statement to Kotaku , the Canadian outfit formerly known as Blue Castle Games is closing their doors today after a series of cancellations. While “a skeleton crew” will remain at the company until January, a total of 158 will lose their jobs. The writing has been on the wall for a while now. Back in February , Capcom Vancouver shed a third of its staff, along with cancelling a yet-unannounced project in production, but it seemed like Capcom still had plans for the studio. Apparently not, and I wish everyone at the shuttered studio the best of luck. (more…)

Following a press release issued earlier today in which Capcom revealed "the termination of development projects" at Capcom Vancouver, the publisher confirmed in a statement sent to Kotaku that the studio will be closed completely early next year.  "As a result of reviewing titles in development at Capcom Vancouver, Capcom has decided to cancel the development projects at this studio and will concentrate development of major titles in Japan," a company rep told the site.
