- Dev Update #6: Clearer Orders, Better Reports - 17 September 2026
Hello, pilots! Recent playtests took Rotary Knights down different paths: shadowing a contact instead of engaging, leaving an objective unfinished, splitting a bomb load across passes, and switching careers after combat. Those choices exposed places where the game needed to explain its results more clearly. This update focuses on the journey from orders to the squadron's return report. A delivery has a result of its own Message Drop now gives you an explicit delivery decision and a receipt showing what happened to the message. Avoiding an enemy contact leaves the assignment open to complete. Choosing to return with the packet undelivered is recorded as an unfinished order. From development playtests of these repairs: a collected message completes the delivery order. Know what the aircraft can do Bombing orders explain the three-group minimum for Full Load and how to spend smaller remain…
- Dev Update #5: The First Hour, Rebuilt - 13 August 2026
Hello, pilots! A new Rotary Knights career in development begins in General Service. You arrive without a specialization, learn the common work of an RFC pilot, and fly an Avro 504 familiarization circuit before choosing the posting that will shape your career. That order matters. It lets the first decision come from something you have done in the cockpit instead of a label on a character-creation screen. Earn Your Posting Ground school covers movement, observation, risk, and the return leg. Then the Avro flight asks you to plan complete routes, manage fuel, read an unexpected contact, and bring the machine back in one piece. Your instructor records how you handled those situations and may recommend Fighter, Reconnaissance, or Bomber service. The recommendation is advice. The posting board keeps all three paths open and tells you the first machine, the job, the central danger, and the p…
- Dev Update #4: The Living Front Takes Flight - 30 July 2026
This development update accompanies the public Steam demo release. The Steam demo is now available as v0.6.366. Hello, pilots! Rotary Knights has changed across the whole flight loop. The Western Front now helps you plan a sortie, the tactical board gives each mission its own demands, and the squadron remembers more of what happened after you land. The Living Front, Balloon Bust, Cloud Cover, the rebuilt demo finale, and Trench Strafing now form one complete Steam-demo sortie loop. Plan the route, choose altitude and attack commitment, fight past escorts and ground fire, fly the withdrawal, and bring wounds, aircraft damage, objective state, local influence, and War Diary consequences home. Plan the Flight Before Takeoff The Western Front has grown into an operational map. Before takeoff, the Operation Plan shows the outbound route, the return leg, total fuel, reserve, known threats, th…
- Dev Update #3 — Building the First Demo Slice - 28 March 2026
Editorial note — July 2026: This March update has been revised to remove obsolete pre-release details. The free Steam demo is now available, and Dev Update #4 covers the current v0.6.366 release. Hello, pilots! This post looks back at an earlier Rotary Knights milestone: strengthening the opening, making the first sorties more readable, and turning the aerial board into a clearer tactical experience. At the time, these systems were still moving quickly. They helped establish the focused slice that players can now download on Steam. Strengthening the Opening The prologue received more room for character, tension, and meaningful decisions. Pilot creation, temperament, and the first aerodrome scenes were refined so choices felt connected to the war unfolding around the squadron. That work also clarified an important design goal: Rotary Knights is not only about winning an engagement. It is…
- Dev Update #2 — Demo March 24, Combat Feel Overhaul - 4 March 2026
Demo — March 24Steam demo drops March 24. It covers summer 1914 through your first combat patrols — the opening act of the war. You'll create your pilot, pick a specialization (fighter, recon, or bomber), fly your first sorties over the Western Front, and get into your first hex tactical fights. It's a real slice of the game, not a tutorial. Your choices stick, your kills count, and the war moves whether you're ready or not.Wishlist now so you don't miss it.Player Experience OverhaulLast update was about visuals. This one's about feel — making the game actually respond to what you're doing, moment to moment.Near-miss urgency. When your aircraft gets shot up, you know it. HP below 50% triggers damage warnings. Below 25%, critical. On fire? You see it immediately. Enemy trailing smoke? You know you're close to a kill.Enriched victories. Downing an enemy now shows wreckage, combat stats (ro…
- Dev Update #1 — New Graphics, Bug Squashing, and Launch Approaching - 20 February 2026
Rotary Knights is getting closer to takeoff. Here's what I've been working on.Visual Overhaul: Dogfight Hex MapI'm overhauling the dogfight combat screen with a new visual direction inspired by classic hex wargames. What changed:Aircraft now sit inside faction-colored unit counters — RFC khaki for your side, German feldgrau for the enemy — with altitude badges, heading indicators, and HP bars. Readable at a glance, the way a proper wargame board should be.The hex grid itself has been cleaned up with a uniform sky palette that keeps the focus on tactical positioning instead of visual noise.HUD panels now match the Western Front campaign map's board-game aesthetic — warm brown borders, opaque panels, faction roundels.I want every dogfight to feel like you're commanding chits on a squadron table. The old dark leather look is gone — replaced with a sky gradient and crisp grid lines that make…
