- Overload review - 6 August 2018
Overload is an arcade shooter that pits you against armies of drones armed with beautiful lasers. You attack each space dungeon in a little one-seat craft; your mission is to find the core, blast it, and then Millennium Falcon out of the nearest escape hatch as the facility goes up in fireworks. It's a spiritual successor to Descent, so expect to lose track of what's up and what's down almost immediately. Levels are constructed from a bewildering array of vertical shafts and small tunnels, and they are heaving with floaty enemy mechs. Without the hologram button that shows you to your next objective I would still be lost in there with them now, exchanging rocket salvos in claustrophobic dogfights. I was worried combat would be too woozy and disorienting, but great care has gone into giving your ship a smooth sense of momentum. You're free to point and roll your ship…
- Descend into Overload's custom levels - 25 June 2018
If you enjoyed Descent spiritual successor Overload but its 15 levels weren’t enough, good news: a level editor is now available, allowing you to create and export single-player and challenge mode levels. The editor will be automatically added to the game soon, but in the meantime you can download it here .  The promise of level editing tools was a big part of the successful (just) Kickstarter , so it’s encouraging to see them arrive not too long after the game’s launch at the end of May. If you’re one of the unfortunately small number of people who play Overload’s multiplayer, however, you’ll need a wait for custom multiplayer maps. Support for them is planned, but right now it’s all about the single-player stuff.  “if you're itching to develop MP levels we recommend exporting a potential MP level as SP or CM for te…
- Descent successor Overload officially releasing next month - 23 April 2018
Overload, the 6DOF (six-degrees-of-freedom) shooter from the folks who made Descent, was successfully Kickstarted in March 2016 and hit Steam Early Access in March 2017. Today, developer Revival Productions announced it will officially release on Steam and GOG May 31, and that it will launch with the multiplayer which was originally going to be added on later.  The full game boasts a 15-level campaign plus 12 challenge mode levels, Revival says, with 20 different enemy robots and three boss fights between them. As you progress, you can outfit your spaceship with 16 different weapons. You can get a sample of all that in Overload's free Steam demo , or you can buy the full game for $25 before it jumps to $35 once it leaves Early Access.  Descent's official sequel, Descent: Underground, was made by Descendent Studios, confusingly enough. The team at Revival, meanwhile,…
- Revved and Ready! - 23 April 2018
This Playable Teaser gives a taste of the game including one single-player-style level and two Challenge Mode levels. Earlier versions of this demo were released in March 2016 and March 2017. We just revved it, so features included in this version are essentially the same as they will be in the full version. Please note, the teaser only includes partial localization. This is the perfect "test-drive" to make sure Overload is the game for you. This demo contains a training level, a sample single-player "destroy the reactor" level, and two Challenge Mode levels that let you test your skills against a horde of enemies. Overload is available now via Steam Early Access. If you like the demo, check out the full version!

- Overload gets updated demo ahead of imminent early access release - 5 March 2017
At around this time last year , Revival Productions was running a Kickstarter for its spiritual Descent sequel, which is more interesting than the actual recent Descent sequel, as this one's being made by many of the people behind the original games. They released an early demo so we could see what they were aiming for, and now, one year later, Revival has released an updated demo version, so we can see how Overload has progressed over the last 12 months. You can find Overload Playable Teaser 2.0 on Steam here . It's a "complete refresh, with updated graphics, sound, and gameplay", just so you know. The demo comprises a "training level, a sample single-player 'destroy the reactor' level, and two Challenge Mode levels that let you test your skills against a horde of enemies". 'So why's this demo suddenly being released out of the blue?' you're prob…
- The Overload Kickstarter gets funded just two hours before it ends - 11 March 2016
A few days ago, we brought your attention to the newly-released demo for Overload , the 6DOF shooter being developed by the guys who made Descent. But with the good news—free game—came bad: The $300,000 Kickstarter campaign was just a few days from ending and had achieved not much more than half its goal. I didn't say so in the post, but there was no doubt in my mind that it was all over but the shouting. And I was wrong. It was a close thing, but with less than two hours left in the campaign, the goal was achieved, and it ultimately wrapped up with $306,537. The Kickstarter got a big push over the final day, during which the team ran a 24-hour livestream on Twitch and released two new builds of the demo, available via direct download from yesterday's update . They're pretty rough and not quite as ready for release as the previous builds, but they provide a stiffer challenge…
