- A Free Expansion for Sword & Siege: Crusades, Book II - 3 July 2026
We are pleased to announce the first free expansion pack for Sword & Siege: Crusades, Book II. This new pack adds a fresh campaign and 10 additional standalone scenarios, expanding the scope of the Third Crusade beyond the historical path taken by Richard the Lionheart and into the realm of plausible medieval what-if warfare. Much had changed since the First Crusade ended with the creation of the Kingdom of Jerusalem in 1099. For the people of the Levant, war became the inheritance of that success. There were periods of quieter conflict, truces, and even limited cooperation, but peace was rarely more than a temporary pause. Edessa, the first of the Crusader states to be established, was also the first to fall. Its loss helped call the Second Crusade into being, but that expedition failed to restore the county and failed again before Damascus. The surviving Crusader states, led above all…

- From Cataphract to Tank: The Eternal Logic of Shock Warfare - 20 April 2026
For thousands of years, commanders have sought the same decisive battlefield effect: to shock the enemy into collapse. From the thunderous charge of ancient armored horsemen to the rumble of tank columns, the goal has been to break the enemy’s will at a critical point and trigger a rout.Wargamers and historians alike recognize this as a recurring theme – a continuity of operational thinking that stretches from antiquity to modern times. The tools and technology changed, but the eternal logic of shock warfare remained. Concentrate a force of overwhelming power at the decisive moment, strike hard and fast, and watch the opposition crumble in panic. In this themed essay, we’ll journey from the Parthian cataphracts at Carrhae to the armored spearheads of World War II and the air cavalry in the jungles of Vietnam, exploring how heavy cavalry charges and blitzkrieg thrusts are kindred spirits…
- Crusades: Book II – Faith, War, and Betrayal in the East - 11 April 2026
Crusades: Book II, a Deep DiveIn the mid-12th century, the eastern Mediterranean was a complex region of competing powers. The Latin crusader states, though wealthy in ports and castles, were short on manpower. The Roman (Byzantine) Empire, a Christian great power, had its own strategic priorities and a history of lost provinces. The Muslim world, while not unified, was increasingly capable of consolidating resources under strong rulers in Syria and Egypt. Warfare was constant, influenced by both politics and piety, with alliances shifting and control of strategic locations often more important than holding empty land.Crusades: Book II picks up after the Second Crusade’s failure outside Damascus in 1148. The Crusader forces abandoned the siege due to supply issues, conflicting goals, and mistrust among allies. The Levant was left with a frontier society, the Latin states of the Holy Lan…
- Introducing Wargame Design Studio - 27 March 2026
Wargame Design Studio was founded in 2016 as a group of enthusiasts to both develop and enhance the games from John Tiller. John developed a wide array of wargames and, in addition, did extensive contract work for the US Air Force and Navy from 2003-2021. John Tiller passed away in April after a short illness.Subsequently, David Freer and Rich Hamilton purchased the intellectual property rights to the John Tiller Software catalog and rebranded the company as Wargame Design Studio. Work began on the massive overhaul of the various game series that had been published, introducing new graphics and numerous engine enhancements. Additionally, new game projects were underway to add titles to the…
