- Demo is 99% Complete - 29 August 2026
The Demo Is Almost DoneLast update I said we were getting close. This time I actually mean it.The past few weeks have been less about adding brand new systems and more about going back through the demo and making everything feel cleaner, smoother, and more complete. A lot of this work has been the boring-but-important kind of development that nobody really notices unless it’s missing. The biggest change has probably been the opening of the game.I spent a lot of time tightening the early flow through Thornvale so the first hour feels more deliberate and less like the player is wandering around wondering what they’re supposed to care about. The castle opening has been reworked, the early NPC interactions are more useful, and the path toward the Wiseman and the Needle is much clearer without just throwing a giant glowing arrow on the screen and calling it a day. The goal is still to let pla…
- The World is More Alive - 13 August 2026
The World Feels a Little More AliveWell, this ended up being a bigger update than I initially anticipated. In the last devlog, I said the next major goal was making the world feel more alive and filling it with more things to actually discover. That has been the focus of the last few weeks, along with an ungodly amount of bug fixing and polish. Side QuestsThe biggest addition is side quests. I added the new questlines and NPCs throughout the demo, giving players a lot more reasons to actually explore Thornvale instead of just following the main story from point A to point B. Some are small encounters, others open up larger stories, and several can be found simply by wandering around and talking to people. This was something the demo desperately needed. The world was there, the lore was there, but there weren’t enough reasons to stop and interact with it. Hopefully now there’s a little mo…
- Localizations and Future Events - 1 August 2026
Another smaller development update!Over the past few weeks, one of my biggest priorities has been making Cradle of Life more accessible to players around the world. The game now supports Japanese, Korean, Simplified Chinese, and Traditional Chinese, alongside English. At first, I thought this would mostly be a matter of translating dialogue. Turns out, RPGs contain… a lot of text….Menus, quests, tutorials, battle messages, item descriptions, status effects—you don’t really appreciate how much writing there is until you have to translate all of it while digging through JSON files. The game now has a proper localization system, with each language using its own translation files and fonts where needed (my current base font was too fancy for the symbols). There’s still some polishing left to do, especially with text wrapping and making sure everything fits neatly across different languages, b…
- The Biggest Update Yet - 7 July 2026
Over the past few weeks, development has shifted away from adding more content and toward something I’ve wanted to do for a long time - completely reworking the game’s visuals to make the world feel more alive. So we say goodbye to the old tilesets and hello to parallax mapping!A lot of these changes aren’t flashy enough to fit into a single screenshot, but together they’ve completely transformed how the game looks and feels. The forests actually feel like forests now, with dynamic lighting and deep shadows beneath the trees. Ancient shrines feel holy and sacred. Caves feel dark and oppressive. The atmosphere has improved dramatically and is finally starting to match the vision I’ve had for the game from the beginning. One of my favorite additions is region-based light motes. Tiny particles of dust now drift through rays of light, making areas feel much more alive. Even better, they chan…
- Rebuilding of The Cradle of Life Demo and New Assets - 14 June 2026
Another development update from the depths of my basement (which still doesn't exist). This month ended up becoming less of a content update and more of a complete overhaul of the systems that hold the game together. What started as a few planned improvements quickly spiraled into a full rebuild of large portions of the game. On paper, it probably doesn't sound as exciting as adding a new region or boss fight, but in practice it's one of the biggest updates I've worked on so far and greatly helped stabilize and make the game more efficient/fun.The largest addition is the new character creator - This took a ton of time to perfect.Players can now create their own character using layered sprites, custom portraits, hairstyles, beards, colors, armor variations, and more. The system generates both the in-game sprite and portrait dynamically, which means the character you create is the character…
- DEVLOG .03 - 6 June 2026
Another development update from the depths of my basement (I actually don't have a basement). This month was less about adding giant new systems and more about giving the game its own identity, particularly around the art assets. One of the biggest additions has been the new character creator. Players can now build their own character using layered sprites, custom portraits, different hair styles, beards, colors, and other options. It's still very much a work in progress, but it's finally reached the point where it feels like a real feature instead of a collection of ideas I thought would be cool. This needs a few more weeks in the oven, but when complete I think it will be unique to see a sprite you created walking around the game. The other major focus has been art. When I started this project, AI art helped me get ideas out of my head and onto the screen quickly. It was useful as a plac…
- DEVLOG .02 - 22 May 2026
Another quick development update before I vanish back into debugging for another week.Big focus lately has been combat, followed by map building, followed by lore.I added a new Poise system along with weapon-specific impact mechanics because I realized I didn’t want every weapon to just feel like “same attack, different numbers.” Heavy weapons now cause stagger, lighter weapons feel faster and more reliable, and positioning/elevation are starting to matter a lot more during fights with custom states that impact accuracy, evasion, and damage. Basically, I’m trying to make combat feel dangerous instead of just turning into “walk forward and spam attack until somebody falls over.” So far, it’s mostly working I think. I’ve also been reworking the Steam page and replacing older assets now that the game finally has a more consistent visual style. Looking back at some of the original screensho…
- DEVLOG .01 - The Beginning - 15 May 2026
Nine months ago this game didn’t exist in any form, except for in my head. Not in RPG Maker, or on paper and definitely not in some massive design document made by a guy who actually knew what he was doing. It was just an idea stuck in my head while I was at work, driving home, sitting outside with my kids, or trying to steal an hour at night after everybody else went to sleep.A little about me - I’m active-duty Marine, I’m a husband, I’ve got two kids, and most of this project got built in the leftover time between everything else I am trying to do, as the case with most indie devs.A little something on how this idea became a game - The weird thing is, the game didn’t really start with combat as most projects do, it started with stories from an absolute legend. My dad was one of those guys who could make sitting around a fire feel bigger than life. Every time we went camping, we would b…
