  • v1.4.020 - the freezes were my fault, and here's what they were - 16 September 2026

Some of you got a game that froze at the logo, or showed the main menu and then locked up on the loading screen, or ran at one frame every ten seconds. One review called it horrible. That was a fair word for what you got, and this update is mostly about it. What was actually happening The game ships its shaders pre-compiled so your graphics card doesn't have to do that work the first time the store draws. Except it didn't. For several builds the export reported that step as on, and it was quietly producing nothing. Every single launch on your machines was compiling every shader in the store, live, while you waited: about fifteen seconds in one frozen frame on my PC, and far longer on cards slower than mine. On some machines it never got past the loading screen at all. The embarrassing part is why I didn't catch it. On my PC the graphics driver caches the compiled result after the first…

  • A better day behind the counter - 13 September 2026

Hi everyone, I've been working through your recordings and reports. This Demo and Playtest update catches up on the changes since September 6, including fixes that reached the builds between posts. Quick highlights A new first-era computer look, inspired by Windows 2000/XP, with clearer orders and budgets. Better trade-ins and repairs, from grading a copy to opening the Nexus cartridge and using the tools. More natural hands and customers, with improved shelf pickups, basket unloading and payment. Stock you can find, plus clearer skills, shop plans and money tracking. A tidier shop and livelier street, with improved placement, glass, lighting and traffic. The refreshed first-era computer, with live order counts and a clearer budget. Full patch notes The computer and everyday screens Reworked the first-era computer with blue title bars, pale toolbars, white product cards and clearer sele…

  • The demo is out, and I redrew the covers and cutouts - 7 September 2026

Hey everyone! Last time I posted here was in August, before the demo was out. It's free to play now, and I've just put out its biggest update so far. A lot of drawing Every game cover in the demo and all 99 cardboard cutouts are now hand-drawn by me. The whole game is about being a kid in a game store again, so I wanted the art on the shelves to come from that same place instead of looking professionally made. The demo previously used AI-generated artwork. After the feedback on that, I've been replacing it with my own drawings. Era 1 is done, including the cutouts, so the covers aren't the only things in the store with that look anymore. Later eras still have the old placeholder covers. I'm redrawing those one era at a time, oldest first. I'm doing this around two jobs, so I'm not putting a date on the rest yet. You can actually afford to run the store now I went back through the demo's…

  • Big Update: 823 changes since this page went up - play it free right now - 17 August 2026

I've been busyWhen this page went up in April I was just one person, building a game store sim with no budget, and that you could come and watch me build it. Since then there have been 823 changes to the game. Almost all of it landed in the playtest, which is free and open to everyone right now. Here's where the game is actually at now: The store starts empty. You build it.You don't inherit a furnished shop. You get a lit shell and a catalog, and the floor is yours. Buy and place every fixture yourself - shelves, glass cases, counters, racks Placement is free-form: no grid, and pieces snap flush to each other when you push them together Wall paint, wallpaper, slatwall, carpet and ceiling panels Posters, hanging signage and ceiling banners you can place, move and remove It all stays exactly where you left it The floor matters more than the registerThe interesting job is being a shopkeepe…

  • We Just Went Live on Steam. The Journey Starts Here. - 9 April 2026

We have a Steam page! This is real now.I'm not here to announce a launch. The game isn't ready for that yet. But the Steam page is live, and that feels like a milestone worth sharing.I'm one person. I started with zero game dev experience. No team, no studio, no budget. Just an idea I couldn't shake: what if you could run your own game store, starting in the late '90s, and live through every console generation? So I started building it.What's already working🎮 Hands-on retail - Stock shelves, scan items, count change, inspect trade-ins. Every sale is physical.📅 Five console eras - Start in the cartridge age and work through generations of era-authentic consoles and culture🛒 25+ parody game titles - Love letters to the franchises you grew up with. You'll recognize every one.👤 Customers with personality - Collectors, bargain hunters, clueless parents, demo-station kids. Seven types.🏗️…
