Despite being announced less than two weeks ago, Magic: The Gathering — Duels of the Planeswalkers 2013 is only two days away from release. Wizards of the Coast hasen't given us a lot of time to weigh the pros and cons of the new game compared to the previous iterations we already own, and everyone I've talked with has told me the same thing: they're happy with the 2012 version and aren't sure why they should pay $10 for this new one. To be honest, I didn't have a good answer either. So I spent dug into the preview build of Duels of the Planeswalker 2013 this morning to see if it's worth upgrading to. Magic: The Gathering hit the Xbox 360 and PC with Duels of the Planeswalkers , only to be followed a year later by DotP 2012 on multiple platforms, and now the upcoming DotP 2013 . So why is a customizable card game, which is based around adding parts, getting annualized as full, separate games? According to developer Stainless Games, it has a lot to do with Microsoft's policies on Xbox Live Arcade games. "What we wanted to do originally was, as we're living in the modern digital download era, make a game and just carry on releasing DLC for it, and go on forever," production director Ben Gunstone told Eurogamer . "That proved in the real-world to be very difficult, within the constraints of Xbox, mainly." 1. Life totals in the 2HG Ranked Lobby Game have been corrected 2. Foil/premium and Unlock deck DLC have been implemented and are purchasable. 3. When a user unlocks a deck during game play they can no longer purchase this Deck through Steam Store, as the unlock deck button has been removed in the Deck Editor so the user can not select this option if they have already unlocked the deck manually. 4. In the Deck Editor the Tool tip for premium foil deck has been amended to provide more information about the purchase being non re-fundable 5. Unlocking cards now works successfully in Custom Duel. When loading a saved custom duel and winning it, the user did not unlock a card, they now do. 6. CPU usage has been improved and reduced.

We have a fix for a bug concerning the mentoring leader board scores that we will be implementing soon. This will have the unfortunate side effect of resetting everyone’s mentoring scores to 0. Among other things, this patch should address some of the crash issues and problems with ranked matches.
