• Bungie moves to reassure Destiny fans after securing $100m for new game - 2 June 2018

  Bungie has received over $100m as part of an investment from a Chinese publisher to build a new game. The Destiny developer received the investment from NetEase, which operates Blizzard games such as World of Warcraft, StarCraft 2 and Overwatch in mainland China. NetEase now has a minority stake in Bungie and a seat on its board of directors, but insisted the developer will continue to operate independently. "Today, we're excited to announce that we've entered into a new partnership with NetEase to help us explore new directions," reads Bungie's statement . Read more…

  Apparently speedrunning - racing to finish a game as fast as possible - is quite popular. Of course it is - where have you been? Haven't you heard of the charity speedrunning marathons Games Done Quick ? Speedrunning involves not only knowing every nook and cranny of a game but also how to cut its corners and even break it, if needs be. Take Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus - speedrunners discovered you can skip an entire boss fight with the Citadel/Zitadelle by simply running right past it. But the discovery wasn't the shock to developer MachineGames you might think. "That might look like it's incidental, but the boss actually wanted - he likes for people to be able to speedrun the game," said senior game designer Andreas jerfors during his talk at Digital Dragons 2018. • Four years later, Destiny players reckon they've finally worked out who the Exo Stranger really is - 12 May 2018

  In vanilla Destiny, one character in particular embodied the Frankenstein's monster-style story Bungie had patched together after tearing up the plot during development: the Stranger. The Stranger, an exo character who teleported in and out of the world like a robotic Doctor Who, was a character who led the player during the campaign, uttering nonsensical riddle-like phrases throughout. At one point, the player desperate for some exposition, the Stranger says: "I don't even have time to explain why I don't have time to explain." The phrase became something of a joke, an inadvertent embodiment of Destiny's development troubles and the resultant mess that was its campaign. Read more…

• Warmind's story is pretty good - if you're a Destiny lore nerd - 10 May 2018

  Warmind, Destiny 2's second and latest expansion, offers a short but sweet helping of new story which will last you around three hours. The campaign is spaced across five missions where you fight our old friends the Hive, meet characters previously teased in obscure lore files, and which moves the overall Destiny story along... if only by an inch. There's much more to the expansion than its story content, of course, and for that we'll have a review next week, once we've had time to explore all the post-campaign missions and questlines appraise the new Cruicible maps, and sample the Raid Lair activity which will go live at 6pm UK time this Friday, 11th May.
