- THQ Nordic acquires IP rights to classic combat racer Carmageddon - 3 December 2018
The seemingly insatiable THQ Nordic has announced the acquisition of yet another beloved, but regrettably dormant gaming IP. This time around, it's classic (and notorious) vehicular smash-'em-up Carmageddon's turn to join the publisher's rapidly swelling ranks. Carmageddon originally launched in 1997 on PC, amid a wave of tabloid-generated controversy in the UK. The British Board of Film Classification, responsible for handing out the country's game ratings at the time, was not at all happy about Carmageddon's wanton vehicular violence and incentivised pedestrian slaughter. As a result, developer Stainless Games was forced to swap Carmageddon's squishable humans for green-blooded zombies. However, ten months later, after a successful appeal, the uncensored version was released. - Smash! Bash! Cash! THQ Nordic buy Carmageddon - 3 December 2018
In their ongoing mission to own PC gaming 1992-2006, publishers THQ Nordic are now buying the intellectual property rights to Carmageddon. Like when they bought Alone In The Dark earlier this year, THQ Nordic (who even bought the “THQ” half of their name) say part of their ownership will, naturally, involve thinking about maybe making “sequels and new content”. Which they’ve gone on to do with many of the games they bought. Carmageddon isn’t quite so gone-and-forgotten, considering creators Stainless Games released a crowdfunded sequel to their Death Race-inspired smash-o-driver only a few years back, but it started in 1997 and so THQ Nordic must own it. But if your game is not being updated, please log out of Steam and back in and it should then start the update. The fixes in the Hot Fix are: MULTIPLAYER - The game no longer locks to 33fps after a reset following a desync. MULTIPLAYER - Multiplayer events with the Toucan should now not cause desyncs.
