Just Cause 4 may not be as well regarded as Just Cause 2 and Just Cause 3, but it's still a fantastic option for anyone looking to spend a while flinging themselves across a sandbox world and blowing up nearly everything they see. Though it has a story and curated mission design not unlike Grand Theft Auto 5 or Saints Row 4, Just Cause 4 is also, like the similarly anarchic Red Faction: Guerilla, at its best when players let those aspects of the game take a back seat and revel in the chaotic potential of its more free form design instead. In advance of the big reveals at Summer Game Fest , Square Enix has rather offhandedly confirmed Just Cause 5 - or, at the very least, that a "new title" in the Just Cause open-world game franchise is in development, presumably at regular developer Avalanche Studios. Just Cause 4 arrived way back in December 2018 to semi-enthusiastic reviews , and since then we haven't heard a peep out of the franchise - except for the possibility of a Just Cause movie from the creator of John Wick. More recently, Square Enix confirmed in May that it was selling many of its Western studios to Embracer Group, including the makers of Deus Ex and Tomb Raider. Just Cause and Rage 2 developer Avalanche Studios was not part of that sale because Square Enix doesn't own them - but the publisher does own Just Cause. The sky darkens and the air browns as the sandstorm comes in. I struggle to run to shelter in the strong winds so grapple hook the short distance to a protective wall. As I hunker down I can see the glimpses of the base's disintegration through breaks in the dust. Fuel tanks shred and explode in the gale, Black Hand vehicles and soldiers whip past in the wind - anything without concrete foundations is fair game for the storm. When the weather settles down, the enemy base is a wreck. It would take me ten minutes and a ton of explosives to do what the storm has done in 30 seconds. After seven months driving and diving and leaping and exploding around since Just Cause 4’s launch, Rico Rodriguez will soon be able to enjoy a slower pace of life. A future update will extend the weirdly short nights of the in-game day cycle, for starters. More importantly, Rico will get to change the time of day by parking his bum in a comfy chair and watching the world go by, attracting flocks of wild animals to hang out as he idles.
